Around this time of the year, we take a deep breath and wonder where the time went. The swelter-ing summer heat is slowly becoming an item of the

past, the awesome summer vacation pictures and memories have moved to the back of our minds, and our kids have settled back into their school and sports routines. Now that the Halloween sugar rush has worn off, we are already in full preparation for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Wow! Thanksgiving already? In the blink of an eye the entire year seems to have gone by. Another fantastic year of enjoying time with family, friends and neighbors, of being there for each other through good times and bad, and of enjoying each other’s companionship.

JafCo Celebrated the grand opening of its new Children’s Ability Center in September, making it the first center nationwide to offer family

support, therapy, child enrichment and respite care, all under one roof for children up to age 22 with any developmental disability.

Politicians and dignitaries who are dedicated to helping families raising children with developmental disabilities showed their support by participating in this milestone celebration. Those that attended included JAFCO Capital Donors and many dignitaries including Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Former Florida Senators Nan Rich and Ellyn Bogdanoff, Jewish Federation of Broward County President and CEO Eric Stillman, Sunrise Mayor Michael Ryan, Broward County Commissioner Martin Kiar, Director of the Agency for Persons with Disabilities Barbara Palmer and Rabbi Gross all who officially helped to open the new center in a moving symbolic ribbon cut-ting ceremony.

Sarine Salama, mother of a son with autism, also shared her story about how meaningful this center is to her entire family. She related how helpful the services have been to her and how much she is looking forward to utilizing JAFCO’s child enrichment services.

Following the ribbon cutting, children who are being served by JAFCO helped to release 18 white doves to commemorate JAFCO’s milestone in opening the 43,000 square-foot facility.

Throughout the course of the day, more than 500 people came to celebrate the grand opening and take tours of the building that will accommodate hun-dreds of children per year offering families a beauti-ful, loving and fun place giving every child a place where they can belong.

“The details that went into the design of this build-ing are extraordinary and must be seen to be truly appreciated,” said Sarah Franco, JAFCO founding executive director. “We cannot thank our community enough for its continued support over the past 22 years.” The center’s long list of attributes includes unique features such as a swing specifically for children who use wheelchairs so they can experi-ence the thrill of swinging. The center will have an organic garden, a general store and a life skills environment—a place where kids can learn garden-ing, shopping, cooking and socializing.

“At JAFCO, we are inspired by the strength and love of parents who are raising children with disabilities,” said Linda Sachs, JAFCO Community Outreach and Parent Support Specialist. “We recognize that this can be an overwhelming and challenging journey. We want the parents to know that they are no longer alone and that we’re here to help.”

Services that will be offered include family support, child enrichment, therapies and respite care. JAFCO will offer enhanced case management; day/weekend and extended respite care; social skills, a life skills

series which includes culinary, office and leisure skills training; physical, occupational and speech therapy as well as behavioral services. In order to access services, families are invited to attend a scheduled parent tour and learn more about the pro-grams that are being offered. The idea for the center began in 2007 when the JAFCO Board of Trustees saw the alarming increase of children in South Florida being diagnosed with a developmental disability. Estimates suggest that one in ten children today are being diagnosed with a developmental disability. This dream for the com-munity became a reality with the support of $1 million dollar lead gifts from Sam and Adele Borger, Stephen and Helene Weicholz, The David Posnack Foundation and the Jewish Federation of Broward County for donating the land.

The center is designed by Architect Teen Woon in the beautiful architectural style of Frank Lloyd Wright. The thirteenth annual graCe JamaiCan Jerk festival will be held at Markham Park on Sunday, November 9th. “The Biggest Caribbean Food Festival in the USA” takes place at the park, located at 16001 West

State Road 84 in Sunrise, between 10:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m.. “It’s like taking a trip to Jamaica without having to leave Florida,” said event

organizer Eddy Edwards. “The festival appeals to people of all ages. The first thing is the great food we offer with all the Caribbean cuisine there. There will also be a lot of cultural entertainment, with many of the acts coming from Jamaica.”

The food takes top billing at the festival, and anyone who does not already come hungry will surely be hungry by the time all the aromas of the jerk cooking hits them. Jerk is a style of spicing and grilling meat that was first developed by escaped slaves living in Jamaica. While chicken and pork are the most common items given the jerk treatment, patrons at the Jerk Festival will find a vast array of food available. Last year, one vendor was even selling jerk ice cream.

Festival-goers will be treated to some of the best in Jamaican music while they enjoy all of the mouth-watering food. Headlining the musical lineup is Inner Circle,

the reggae band famous for the song “Bad Boys”, the theme song from the televi-sion show COPS. Reggae musicians Luciano, Duane Stephenson, Code Red Band, and Hardcore Movements will also be performing on the main stage. Two cultural stages will showcase poetry readings, folk dancing, and storytelling.

Over 18,000 people are expected to attend this year, and they will find a wide range of activities to choose from. Chefs will be competing against one another for the Dutch Pot Trophy in the Publix Jerk Cook-Off. Chef Maize Miller will be show-ing people how to use Grace brand products like spices and marinades to create their own jerk masterpieces at home. Little ones will enjoy the bounce houses, face painting, rides, and rock climbing found in the Kidz Zone. A domino tournament, netball (think of basketball but you have to shoot the ball into a net and rim without a backboard), and a nightclub-like party pavilion round out the fun.

Tickets are on sale now and cost $22 in advance or $30 at the door. Children aged 10 and under are free. Parking costs $5 and VIP tickets are available for $100.

Sunrise on September 27th from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The event, co-hosted by the Sunrise Bass Club, was held at Welleby Park, and was open to children age 5-15. Participants were asked to bring a fishing pole and bait. The results were impressive as kids caught a wide variety of fish including bass, blue gill, oscar, tilapia, and a snake head. Over 64 fish were caught that day and prizes were awarded for best catch in each age category.

Ryan Anderson, age eight, caught five of those 64 fish himself. Anderson, an avid fisherman since the age of three, added several trophies to his growing collection at the tournament. He tied for first place in most fish caught, won second place for most overall weight, and won second place for largest fish caught. His mom said right now Ryan lives to fish and does so every chance he gets as the family has a lake in their backyard. Ryan, who fishes with both his parents and with his fellow cub scouts. is proud of this trophy

collection which includes eight trophies from fish-ing events and seven from Karate. “Fishing is great because you get to fish, have fun and win trophies,” Ryan said.

International film festival finds a home in Sunrise

On behalf of the fire Chiefs Association of Broward County, Sunrise Fire Chief Thomas DiBernardo unveiled

plans for the Fire Chiefs Association of Broward County’s second annual Golf Tournament benefit-ing the Broward Fire Chiefs Foundation and the American Red Cross. The tournament will be held on Friday, November 21st at the Bonaventure Golf Club at the Bonaventure Country Club in Weston. The entry fee is $75 per player and includes greens fee, cart fee and luncheon. Players will have a chance to win numerous contests as well. The proceeds from the tournament will help to support the two worthy causes here in Broward County.

The Fire Chiefs Association of Broward County (FCABC) is made up of Chief Officers from 29 municipalities, Broward County, and representatives of Broward Trauma Agency, Division of Forestry, and Broward County Emergency Management.

FCABC support many things throughout the year. They provide an annual three day EMS conference that provides continuing education for paramedics. The Association also provides a scholarship program for eligible students from around the county to complete their education in the Fire Service. Lastly the FCABC sup-ports the CERT program as well as the Canteen program which is called upon to

provide rehabilitation services to the counties fire-fighters during larger incidents. Both of these pro-grams are staffed by volunteers and can respond twenty four hours a day seven days a week.

The main purpose of the FCABC is to research and monitor the latest trends in Fire, EMS, and Emergency Management. In doing so it enables the Association to adopt policy that all of its part-ners adopt making Broward one of the leaders of the nation in providing Fire, EMS and Emergency Management services to the community.”

“The American Red Cross is a partner of the FCABC for it is the agency we call upon when the citizens of Broward have been ravaged by fire or some other sort of emergency,” said Chief DiBernardo. “They aid us in providing temporary

housing for displaced families.”DiBernardo added that anyone is welcome to play in the tournament. “We

have found that it provides a fun venue for firefighters and the community to come together for a day to support a great cause,” he said. The muslim population in Sunrise is growing and as a result of that growth

the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR Florida) relo-cated one of its two Florida chap-ters in March from Pembroke Pines to Sunrise. The new loca-tion is 5405 NW 102nd Avenue. The other Florida chapter is in Tampa.

CAIR is the largest Muslim grassroots civil rights and advo-cacy organization in America. They’re mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, encour-age dialogue, protect civil liber-ties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.

Founded in 1994, CAIR is a 501(c)(3)nonprofit organization with affiliates in 20 states, many

of which manage multiple offices, and 33 chapters in the U.S. Its headquarters is located a few blocks from the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C. The core of CAIR’s work is ensuring that the rights guaranteed to every American, regard-less of faith, are enforced.

CAIR Florida has made a commitment to help the underserved and recog-nizes the need for outreach,” said Ghazala Salam, Community and Government Relations Director. “We are dedicated to fostering a vibrant community through programs that cultivate civic engagement, community service, support for educa-tion, and diversity. Our objective is to promote a sense of community and connec-tion through partnerships focusing on strengthening and utilizing collaborations with volunteers, non-profit organizations and agencies.”

Through a variety of community outreach programs, CAIR Florida strives to improve communication and understanding by advocating and serving humanity

regardless of race, gender, color or creed. One of their outreach programs is called a Day of Dignity. Recently held in Fort Lauderdale and Lake Worth, CAIR Florida collaborates with Islamic Relief USA, the South Florida Muslim community and many agencies such as the Homeless Coalition and United Way to provide services to South Florida’s homeless and marginalized communities.

Volunteers from around the tri-county area were recruited to assist in distrib-uting non-perishable and hot food, clothing, toiletries, school supplies and even bicycles. Over 25 health and human services providers were present to give health care, vision, and dental screenings. The days were filled with fun games and activities for children, bike raffles, and free haircuts.

CAIR volunteers and board members come from all walks of American life; they include lawyers, businesspeople, professors, doctors, teachers, engineers, and entrepreneurs. CAIR officials and board members also serve on other non-profit boards such as the ACLU, NCCJ, NAACP, and ICIRR. They regularly par-ticipate in interfaith dialogue and are part of civic advocacy and human rights coalitions throughout the United States.

Anyone who passed by ameriCan heritage high sChool on September 24th, might have thought all the hoopla going on in front of the school was a normal fall pep rally in support of the football team. Although

it is true the students were supporting a hero, it wasn’t a football player who was receiving all the attention. The hero receiving all the attention was Kevin Schatz, a Sunrise teen who battled pediatric cancer and survived. Schatz, who will gradu-ate at the end of the school year, has big plans for his future and is grateful for all the support he has received from his friends, fellow classmates, teachers and his family, particularly his grandfather Sam Rosen.

The pep rally celebration at the school, was a send-off of sorts for Schatz and his grandfather who traveled to New York City and appeared as guests on The Today Show, the day after the rally. Kevin, his brother and grandfather joined hundreds of students from schools throughout the New York City area to show their support for pediatric cancer on Go4theGoal’s National Pediatric Cancer Awareness Day. Go4theGoal is an organization that helps children affected by cancer achieve their goals. One of their programs is a Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer

initiative which is centered around selling Gold shoes laces to raise funds and awareness of this devastating disease.

Students and staff at American Heritage stepped up to the plate and purchased 900 of them, which they all proudly wore in support of Schatz at the pep rally. Dr. Carlos Pulido, Adviser for the Pre-Med Society at American Heritage, said $6,000 was made from the sale of the laces and all of it will go towards helping local families who have kids with cancer.

Fueled by the sale of the shoelaces and the tremendous turnout at the pep rally, Schatz was excited to represent the cause on national television. He got to meet Al Roeker as well as the producers and hosts of the show on a cold, rainy morning in Manhattan. The cold and rain didn’t dampen Kevin’s spirit though as he said he is grateful, especially now, for every new experience and every new day.

“I couldn’t have gotten through this past year without the tremendous support of my grandfather and of my friends,” Schatz said. Now I just want to support other kids with cancer and to let everyone know how important it is to appreciate each day because you never know what’s going to happen tomorrow.”

Team sawgrass, a group of 16 teaChers, students and parents from Sawgrass Elementary, participated in the Autism Speaks Walk at Nova Southeastern University in Davie on September 28th. The team participates

every year and will continue to do so in the future. Marlen Veliz, Assistant Principal at

Sawgrass Elementary and the mother of an Autistic child herself, said participating in the Autism Speaks Walk helps create aware-ness, empathy and compassion. “These are the qualities we like to instill in all our stu-dent,” Veliz said. “Our school has three Autism specialized programs as well as an intensive pre-kindergarten classroom consisting of students with Autism thus awareness, empathy and compassion are important components for us. We teach all of our students to be compas-sionate, caring and respectful.”

Autism statistics from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identify around 1 in 68 American children are on the autism spectrum-a ten-fold increase in prevalence in 40 years. Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) affects over 3 million individu-als in the U.S. and tens of millions worldwide. Moreover, government autism statistics suggest that prevalence rates have increased 10 to 17

percent annually in recent years.Autism Speaks continues to fund research on effective methods for earlier

diagnosis, as early intervention with proven behavioral therapies can improve out-comes. Increasing autism awareness is a key aspect of this work and one in which families and volunteers play an invaluable role.

These days, many individuals going through a divorce try to handle the matter without the assistance of an attorney. They feel that it is better to try and settle the

matter without spending large sums of money on legal repre-sentation. In all honesty, simple divorces can easily be handled by the parties. Simple divorces are cases in which there are no minor children and no real assets or liabilities to divide. There is a great deal of assistance through the courthouse or the internet to “walk you through” the process.

Sometimes, however, people can be as they say “penny-wise and pound fool-ish.” In an effort to save money on attorneys’ fees, they may wind up giving up too much or perhaps not receiving his/her share. An individual who represents him/herself is held to the same standards as a licensed attorney. A judge will not give an individual the benefit of the doubt, just because an attorney is not sitting by his/her side in court. This can often present a problem in a more complicated case.

I have often reviewed Marital Settlement Agreements which were entered into without the assistance of counsel. Often these individuals come to see me after the fact, to request assistance in attempting to “get them out” of the Agreement. Unfortunately, it is extremely difficult to undo what has already been done. A Marital Settlement Agreement or a Mediation Agreement has the same validity as any binding contract. In addition, as I previ-ously stated, individuals are expected to know the law. It is not an excuse to later say “I wasn’t represented by an attorney.”

I have often been told by individuals who had initially attempted to represent themselves that judges don’t seem to listen to them in court. Now this could simply be a matter of perception or a true statement. It may also be because non-law-yers are not familiar with the rules of evidence. As such, certain testimony may not be permissible. A court proceeding is controlled by rules of evidence and rules of procedure, which are in many ways illogical and foreign to the average individual.

Many attorneys offer free initial consultations and those that don’t usu-ally charge a nominal fee for the initial meeting. If you have any doubts about the law as it pertains to your situation, it would be in your best interests to consult with an attorney. However, an attorney cannot ethically represent both parties in a divorce and therefore can only advise one of the parties. Therefore, initial consul-tations should take place without your spouse.

Lastly, if you have considerable assets, such as real estate or a busi-ness, or you anticipate a time sharing issue, you should definitely consult with an attorney to discuss these matters. A little bit of experience can go a long way and ultimately save you money.

November is traditionally a time for us to be thankful for what we have and to give to those in need. In Sunrise, we have a long-standing tradition of lending

a helping hand when it’s needed most – and this year is no exception.

For nearly 30 years, City officials and employees have partnered with businesses and community organizations to assemble Thanksgiving Turkey Baskets for Sunrise residents in need. Each basket contains the ingredients for a complete

Thanksgiving dinner, including a turkey, stuffing mix, yams, canned vegetables, cranberry sauce, apples, onions, potatoes, margarine, apple juice, dinner rolls and a pie. This way, families that would otherwise go without can experience the tradition of preparing a Thanksgiving meal together.

From the program’s inception through 2009, Sunrise distributed 25 to 40 bas-kets each year – a total of 3,000+ full Thanksgiving meals. Beginning in 2010, in recognition of the economic downturn and growing need in our community, we have been able to assemble and distribute over 100 Thanksgiving Turkey Baskets annually. More recently, we expanded the program to include end-of-year Holiday Baskets, too.

The Sunrise residents we serve are chosen from our social worker’s client list or recommended through the social work offices of our local schools. Requests for assistance have continued to grow, and we hope to be able to increase our capacity to help. If you would like contribute to this valuable program, please contact the Sunrise Senior Center at (954) 746-3470.

I would like to invite you to participate in yet another November tradition: the Annual Veterans Day Charity Softball Game pitting the City of Sunrise against the Greater Sunrise Chamber of Commerce. This year we are expanding the event by hosting a tournament instead of one matchup. All proceeds will benefit the Wounded Warrior Project, a nonprofit veterans’ service organization that offers a comprehensive range of programs and services for wounded veterans of the military actions following the events of September 11, 2001. Have you notiCed more young kids with braCes on these days? Why so young? Don’t they still have baby teeth? When should I take my child to see the orthodon-

tist for the first time?According to the American Association of Orthodontists,

the best age for children to be seen by an orthodontist for the first time is seven. Why age seven? What can be done at that age? As you might guess, not every orthodontic problem can be treated at age seven. Surprisingly, however, most problems can

be identified by that age. Here are a few things that your orthodontist will look for at your child’s

first visit:▸▸ Crowding and Spacing: By age seven it is possible to tell if a child has

a problem with excessive crowding or spacing. Spacing may mean that a baby tooth has been lost prematurely, a tooth never developed, or that the teeth are just too small. Crowding may require that the arches be expanded or that teeth be removed to help improve the situation.

▸▸ alignment: Although teeth can be aligned at an older age, crooked teeth are more susceptible to uneven wear or damage due to trauma, and the shape and posi-tion of the overlying gum tissues can be compromised. Crooked teeth can also have social implica-tions. If they are dealt with at an early age (seven or eight), they will have less impact on a child’s self-esteem.

▸▸ Protrusive Front Teeth: As men-tioned earlier, by age seven it is obvious if the front teeth stick out farther than is safe or attractive. Although it is not possible to permanently correct overbites before growth has finished, the orthodontist can help reduce the severity of the problem and make things easier for young patients both dentally and socially while waiting for growth to be complete.

▸▸ Tooth Loss and Eruption: Teeth are lost in a fairly specific order. Deviations from this pattern may indicate that a child has developmental issues that need attention. Between the ages of six and eight, it is normal for a child to lose his first eight primary teeth. Ideally, these eight primary incisors are replaced immediately by eight permanent incisors. It is also normal for the child’s first four permanent molars to emerge at age six (hence the name “six-year molars”). By age seven, children should have at least four permanent molars and four permanent incisors. If there are more or less teeth than this, there may be problems with crowding, miss-ing, or extra teeth. Sometimes removing a primary tooth early or maintain-ing a space where a tooth has been lost prematurely can prevent bigger problems later on.

Dr. Michael Maruri recommends screening ALL young patients at age seven so that these and other conditions can be identified and corrected as early as possible. Although some may be able to wait until all the permanent teeth are in, interceptive treatment can make the final results faster, better, and give your children an additional three to four years of having a great smile at an age when their self-image is developing.

There are many views regarding indiCations for ACL Reconstructive Surgery such as age, activity/demand level and degree of instability. Most individuals, especially

moderate to high demand athletes, regardless of age, who have a complete tear of their anterior cruciate ligament, as well as clinical and functional evidence of instability, are candidates for ACL Reconstructive Surgery.

When considering the pediatric or adolescent population, there has been extensive debate in the literature over the last ten

years. Initially, treatment was consistent with bracing, rehabilitation and activity modifications (cessation of sports); however, due to the noncompliance of this patient population and their persistent knee instability with daily activities, these patients will often have further injury to the chondral and/or meniscal surfaces, resulting in degeneration and functional impairment. Non-surgical treatment in this patient population is not advised.

When considering ACL Reconstructive Surgery in pediatric and adolescent patients, age and amount of growth remaining becomes vital, as this may tailor the technique used to reconstruct the child’s knee. The major consideration is the potential risk of injury to the growth plate/physis resulting in growth disturbance before skeletal maturity.

One surgical option is a physeal (growth plate) spar-ing procedure, which is an all-soft tissue technique consid-ered in the younger athletes because of their amount of growth remaining. This pro-cedure is often non-anatomic but does improve functional stability and completely avoids the growth plates.

Another physeal sparing technique in this age group describes the use of drilling superficial bone tunnels within the epiphysis. With the use of fluoroscopic guid-ance during arthroscopy, this technique secures the graft in a relative anatomic position, but still avoids the growth plates.

In a slightly older child, since most of the growth comes from the femur, one may consider a partial transphyseal approach. In this procedure, the graft is brought through a transtibial (physeal) tunnel and is fixed to the femur in a near anatomic position avoiding the physis. A surgeon will often use an all-soft-tissue graft and fix the graft away from the femoral and tibial growth plates, thus, avoid-ing growth disturbances.

Transphyseal anatomic ACL Reconstructions is considered in adolescents and adults, as well as those children who have minimal growth left. This allows for anatomic graft placement by creating tunnels at the native origin and inser-tion sites of the original ACL. With this arthroscopic technique the surgeon drills through the growth plates and depending upon the age of the patient, one may consider soft tissue (hamstring) graft or bone patella tendon bone graft to recon-struct the ACL. The type of tissue used and fixation technique will depend upon the patient’s skeletal maturity and growth remaining.

My gold standard for skeletally mature teenage athletes and young adults is bone patella tendon bone autograft with intraphyseal fixation. When there is a contraindication to using intraosseous fixation I will use hamstring autograft and fix the graft away from the growth plates. These two techniques provide excellent stability with no growth disturbance. I would advise against the use of cadaveric (allograft) tissue in this younger population as there is a higher incidence of graft failure with return to high demand sports.

There are few indications where non-surgical treatment is advised. First is in the low demand sedentary individual who doesn’t describe functional instabil-ity in their day-to-day activities. Next is the young athlete who sustains a partial injury to the ACL but still presents with good clinical stability. In these patients I closely monitor and follow their progress and often advise for the use of a custom de-rotational brace when returning to their sport. The last patient is that patient who is unable, for medical reasons, to pursue surgery because of the potential inherent risks of anesthesia. For these patients I will often advise a physical therapy program, bracing and activity modifications.

According to The National Fire Protection Agency two out of every five home fires start in the kitchen and they along with the Sunrise Fire-Rescue Department have provided these safety tips to help keep you and your family safe this Thanksgiving:

Watch what you heat▸▸ Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking on the stovetop so you can keep

an eye on the food.▸▸ Stay in the home when cooking your turkey and check on it frequently.▸▸ Keep children away from the stove as it will be hot. Children should stay 3

feet away.▸▸ Items heated in a microwave may seem innocent but be careful of scald-

ing burns▸▸ Keep the floor clear so you don’t trip and fall over loose rugs, bags or other

hazards.▸▸ Keep knives out of the reach of children. ▸▸ Be sure to not overload electrical outlets and keep any cords tucked neatly

on the counter and not dangling over the edge.▸▸ Keep matches and utility lighters out of the reach of children.▸▸ Never leave a room where you have a lit candle especially if there are

Sunrise fire-rescue Offers tips for a Safe and happy thanksgiving

As you look outside enJoying your morning coffee, are you envisioning a new pool… maybe a hot tub? Well, good news, your home may be able to provide

past year and Zillow predicts they will rise 3.4% within the next year. What does that mean to homeowners? Should you sell or fix-up your current home? Many homeowners have elected to

use their home equity to upgrade their current home. If you are in the market for a new kitchen, pool or even a debt consolidation loan, ask your local credit union about their affordable home equity loans.

What is a Home Equity Loan?A home equity loan is a second mortgage that is secured by the equity in your

home. The lender determines the equity based on the market value of your home minus what you owe.

There are two types of home equity loans-which one is best for you?

1. Fixed Rate Home Equity LoanThis loan provides a single-lump-sum payment to the borrower, which is repaid over a set period of time at an agreed-upon interest rate. It’s important to know that the payment and interest rate remain the same over the life of the loan. A fixed rate equity loan protects the borrower from interest rate increases and payment fluctuations throughout the life of the loan.

2. Home Equity Line of CreditThis loan is a line of credit also known as a HELOC. The interest rate is variable and works like a credit card. The borrower is pre-approved for a certain spending limit and can withdraw money when they need it by simply writing a check. This line of credit is repaid based on the amount used and the current interest rate. The rate is based on an index, such as the Prime Rate, plus a margin and will vary with the index.

What are the benefits?▸▸ Home equity loans typically have lower interest rate than credit cards ▸▸ Fixed monthly payments with a home equity loan▸▸ Interest cost on home equity loans may be tax deductible▸▸ Borrowers may qualify for large loan amounts (based on built-up equity)▸▸ Funds can be used for any purpose (college tuition, debt consolidation,

home remodeling, etc)

Any downside?▸▸ Rate is usually higher than the first mortgage▸▸ Adjustable monthly payments with a HELOC▸▸ Risk of losing your home if loan is defaulted on▸▸ Downturn of the housing market could put you owing more than the value▸▸ Equity loans are not for everyone...but they could be perfect for you!

No one Can ever be Completely safe from a scam or identity theft – not even the sheriff of Broward County. Earlier this year, I received two checks in the

mail from a company purporting that they owed me money from a past transaction. But there was a catch: the company explained the checks were written to me in error for more than the amount owed to me. All I needed to do was deposit the checks and wire the company the difference. I knew right away that something was wrong. I directed BSO detectives to investi-

gate, and they instantly recognized the two checks were worthless. If criminals try to scam the sheriff, they will certainly try to do it to you!The most effective economic crime, however, is one in which criminals steal

your identity. This is a growing problem affecting millions of Americans every year. Using advances in technology, criminals can obtain and use your personal information easier than ever for their own illegal intent. Your identity can be stolen in a variety of ways: from your trash, over the phone or online (including from the computer records of stores in which you have shopped at in person).

Do not leave financial bills or letters with sensitive information in your mailbox or in your vehicle. Never to carry your Social Security card in your purse or your wallet. Carry only the ID and credit cards you need. Leave the others locked in a secure place.

Do not give credit card or Social Security numbers over the telephone to strangers who may call you. These individuals may pose as a bank, charity, the IRS, the police or even a friend or family member. Use more complex passwords on all online credit card, bank and phone accounts, and use different passwords on different accounts. Never use identifying information, such as your mother’s maiden name, the last four digits of your Social Security number or your birth-date as passwords.

If someone has stolen or is using credit cards or checks that belong to you, immediately notify the financial institution which issued them. If you feel like you have been targeted or were victim to a scam, file an immediate police report with your closest law enforcement agency, and place a fraud alert by calling one of the three national credit reporting companies (Equifax, Experian and TransUnion) that keep records of your credit history. Finally, obtain a free copy of your annual credit report (www.annualcreditreport.com) to ensure there are no unauthorized accounts associated with you.

We created a true entertainment experience Our advanced virtual range, the Nexus Lanes, brings your shooting to the next level, while making it fun at the same time Since the gun’s invention, people have been making holes in paper targets, which is of limited value when training and can become mundane over time Our live fire technology lets you shoot your gun and real ammo at constantly updated interactive video targets, such as defensive sce-narios, shooting galleries, zombie games, skill drills, asteroids and more A computer provides instant feedback by scoring and analyzing each shot We also have a standard paper target range Additionally, we do weekly tactical and competition drills where shooters move and shoot through an obstacle course setup for real world training

Who is your typical customer? Besides existing gun owners, we attract a large number of non-traditional guests who might otherwise be intimi-dated to visit a gun store, such as women, kids, tourists, and first-time shooters

Describe your staff. Our staff is friendly, highly trained, and professional They are happy to help guide guests step-by-step, from choosing the right gun, training to use it properly, and even getting the license to carry it
