If you have faith in me, then it shall be so. Let me

be the one.

I know, Jambavan. I could perhaps cross the sea, but will I be

able to get back?No Angad, you

should not go. You are our commander and crown prince.

Prince Angad, I have grown old and infirm. In my younger days, I would not have

hesitated.

What about you, Hanuman? You are the minister of the monkey kingdom. Your strength, courage, and intellect

are unmatched.

You are the son of the wind god. You can

find your way around any obstacle. Will you not serve your lord Ram by rescuing his wife from the hands of

the evil Ravan?

We are just monkeys. How can we cross

this sea?

This is no job for ordinary

mortals.

Jambavan, king of the bears, spoke to Angad.

And it was then...

The search for Sita had led Prince Angad and his monkey troops to the shores of the southern

sea, beyond which lay the kingdom of Lanka.

That was where the demon king Ravan had held Sita hostage. She had to be rescued, but first they had to cross the giant waves that

were teeming with hungry sea monsters.

Hail Lord Ram!

Hail Hanuman!

I knew we could count on you. For now,

just get us news of Sita—where she is and how to find her. Ram

will be eager to do the rest.

My prince, if those are your orders, then so it

shall be. I will go to Lanka and find out

about Sita.

I shall do this for Lord Ram! Let me

cross this sea of chaos. I shall reach Lanka, destroy Ravan, and

bring back Sita!

...that Hanuman began to grow in size. Jambavan’s words reminded him of the powers that lay within him, long forgotten. Now, they were coming back.

As a child, Hanuman angered the sages by the reckless use of his extraordinary powers. They cursed him that he would forget the use of his powers until someone

reminded him. That moment had now arrived.

I am too heavy. I should

start right now!

I should take off from one of these cliffs, and fly across

this sea that is churning with whirlpools and

monsters.

He had grown so large that the mountain started sinking under his weight.

With his super powers regained, Hanuman was now a giant. What

could stand in his way now?

Without wasting any more time, Hanuman flew into the air.

Soon, he spotted a mountain that had risen from the sea.

Hanuman chose Mount Mahendra.

Thank you for your offer,

Mount Mainak, but I cannot rest until my job of finding Sita

is done.

I am touched by your loyalty to Ram. Your commitment is

admirable. Accept my blessings. May you

succeed!

Where did that mountain come from? It looks full of fruit-bearing

trees and birds and animals. How can such a place exist in the middle of this ocean? Let me

go and see.

Hanuman’s curiosity drew him to the mountain.

Hanuman proceeded to complete his mission.

Hanuman, I am Mount Mainak. The

sea has asked me to help you. You must be tired. Stay here for a

while, and take some rest.

No, I cannot let this opportunity go.

You have no choice. I must have you in my

mouth, it’s the will of the gods!

Then swallow me if you can!

The gods must have sent you for me to eat. Come, I

am hungry.

Sursa, my mission is important! I must find news of Sita to give to Ram. Allow

me to pass. I’ll come back after my work is done, and then

you can eat me.

Sursa opened her mouth wide...

...and Hanuman grew larger.

Hanuman’s devotion did not go unnoticed by the gods. They decided to test him. They asked the Snake Mother Sursa to

take on a monstrous appearance.

This went on for some time until both of them reached enormous

forms. Then suddenly…

Ravan, the king of Lanka, has abducted and imprisoned Ram’s wife, Sita. As Ram and his brother Lakshman search for her, they meet Sug-reev, the king of the monkeys. In aid of Ram, Sugreev sends out search teams in all directi ons. One of the teams discovers that Sita is impris-oned in Lanka, the rich and splendid city of demons, across the south-ern sea. The wide and tumultuous sea poses a challenge. There is only one who can cross it and bring back news of Sita. He is Hanuman, son of the wind god, advisor to Sugreev, and devotee of Ram.

Based on an episode from the Ramcharitmanas by Tulsidas, the story described here needs litt le introducti on to readers familiar with the In-dian epic of Ramayan. Hanuman is strong and invincible, but he is also a brave and loyal follower of Ram, and is able to overcome all crises through his single-minded devoti on.
