FATHER JARETT’S ~ Q & A
Part seven of a seven-part series.
From where does this idea of rubbing oil on sick people for physical and spiritual healing come? Jesus didn’t use oil to heal people?
While we don’t necessarily have any particular passages in the bible where Jesus used oil to heal, we do know His apostles were given that instruction and authority. “He summoned the Twelve and began to send them out two by to and gave them authority over unclean spirits…They drove out many demons, and they anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them.” (Mk. 6:7,13)
“Is anyone among you sick? He should summon the presbyters of the church, and they should pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed any sins, he will be forgiven.” (Jas. 5:14-15) Wow, you cannot get a more deliberate description of the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick than this passage from the letter of James. How could any Christian Church “not” have this as a regular practice? Here we see a very clear description of the use of prayer and anointing with oil for physical healing and the spiritual forgiveness of sins. As if this scripture passage were not enough, Christian theologians over the many centuries of Christianity have quoted this passage again and again to demonstrate a special ministry given to the presbyters of the Church; its priests.
“The priests of Judaism had power to cleanse the body from leprosy—or rather, not to cleanse it at all, but to declare a person as having been cleansed. . . . Our priests have received the power not of treating with the leprosy of the body, but with spiritual uncleanness; not of declaring cleansed, but of actually cleansing. . . . Priests accomplish this not only by teaching and admonishing, but also by the help of prayer. Not only at the time of our regeneration [in baptism], but even afterward, they have the authority to forgive sins: ‘Is there anyone among you sick? Let him call in the priests of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith shall save the sick man, and the Lord shall raise him up, and if he has committed sins, he shall be forgiven.’" (St. John Chrysostom On the Priesthood 3:6 – 387 A.D.)
“As often as some infirmity overtakes a man, let him who is ill receive the body and blood of Christ; let him humbly and in faith ask the presbyters for blessed oil, to anoint his body, so that what was written may be fulfilled in him…(for purposes of space I will not requote the passage from James again)” (Caesar of Arles c.a. 470-542 A.D.)
SUNDAY, JULY 21ST, 2019 ~ SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
This demonstration of the sacrament of anointing of
the sick draws us back to a review of the purpose of the sacraments. Each sacrament is “an efficacious sign of grace instituted by Christ and entrusted to the Church, by which divine life is dispensed to us through the Holy Spirit.” In other words, physical, earthly, material things (oils, water, bread, and wine) are used to draw our human senses into the deeper spiritual reality of God’s presence in our lives. God reaches down and grasps our human bodies, our human senses and lifts us to the real presence of himself, and he accomplishes all this through the hands of ordinary men, first the apostles, now His priests, that have been chosen to be Christ’s image (in Persona Christi) on this earth.
Let us thank God for the intimate relationship available to us in the Sacraments of the Catholic Church and let us never again take for granted these sacred rituals, which draw us ever more into His amazing grace and His awesome love.
In Christ’s Loving Service Your Pastor,

A Family Perspective …by Bud Ozar
Cell phones, emails, faxes, texts and voice mails can reduce our lives to a continual series of interrupted moments. Listen to Jesus in today’s gospel: “You are anxious about many things” robbing us of the precious time needed to BE with others. Quality time is QUANTITY time.
As long as God keeps waking you up,
he’s not done with you yet.
