FATHER JARETT’S ~ Q & A
In other parishes I have seen where the holy water is removed from the fonts throughout the entire season of Lent instead of only during the Triduum, is this permissible?
The Congregation for Divine Worship and the Sacraments in Rome responds to this question with this answer: "This Dicastery is able to respond that the removing of Holy Water from the fonts during the season of Lent is not permitted, in particular, for two reasons: The liturgical legislation in force sees this innovation as contrary to a balanced understanding of the season of Lent, which though truly being a season of penance, is also a season rich in the symbolism of water and baptism, constantly evoked in liturgical texts. The encouragement of the Church that the faithful avail themselves frequently of the sacraments is to be understood to apply also to the season of Lent. The 'fast' and 'abstinence' which the faithful embrace in this season does not extend to abstaining from the sacraments or sacramentals of the Church.
The practice of the Church has been to empty the Holy Water fonts on the days of the Sacred Triduum in preparation of the blessing of the water at the Easter Vigil, and it corresponds to those days on which the Eucharist is not celebrated (i.e., Good Friday and Holy Saturday)."
Clearly, Holy Week is a time of rich symbolism that is to lead us deeper into the mystery of the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Some argue, symbolism should not be explained; otherwise we lose the purpose of symbol, which, they would say has its very meaning explained through the experience of the senses. However, I think that we as a Catholic people are out of practice when it comes to symbolic language and therefore it does us well to review the “whys” of the symbolism of this most central week in our Church calendar year.
There are too many symbols during Holy Week to explain in one article, but a couple that tie in with the removal of the Holy Water from church are the transferal of the Eucharist from the tabernacle to a new place of reservation and the stripping of the altar. The transferal of the Eucharist symbolizes Jesus’ journey to the Garden of Gethsemane with his three chosen disciples. Catholics are invited to stay after the Holy Thursday liturgy to pray with Jesus as he/we prepare to commemorate his passion and death on Good Friday. “Could you not keep watch for one hour? Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.” (Mk. 14:37-38) The stripping of the altar is first to show the stark simplicity and sorrow of Good Friday. Also, because the altar is a symbol of Jesus within the Church, this action also symbolizes the stripping of Jesus in His passion. When we understand the symbols and the actions of the liturgy, it brings the
