Martin de Porres Velázquez, OP (December 9, 1579 – November 3, 1639), was a lay brother of the Dominican Order who was beatified in 1837 by Pope Gregory XVI and canonized in 1962 by Pope John XXIII. He is the patron saint of mixed-race people, barbers, innkeepers, public health workers, and all those seeking racial harmony. He was noted for work on behalf of the poor, establishing an orphanage and a children's hospital. He maintained an austere lifestyle, which included fasting and abstaining from meat.

Among the many miracles attributed to him were those of levitation, bilocation, miraculous knowledge, instantaneous cures, and an ability to communicate with animals.

Knock launches new faith renewal events

A new programme of faith renewal events has been launched at Knock Shrine.

The series of one-day retreats and workshops aims to offer people the opportunity to take

some time out of their busy lives this autumn and engage in prayer, reflection and spiritual

enrichment.

Three one-day retreats, titled ‘Quiet Days for Busy People’ and led by the retreat team and

prayer guides at Knock Shrine, will take place on October 3, November 7 and December 5.

Two workshops, on October 10 and November 28, will focus on The Joy of the Gospel, and

explore Pope Francis’ call to us.

The workshops will be led by Brian Grogan SJ, a highly respected Jesuit theologian, author

and lecturer.

A day conference on November 14, delivered by Fr Sean McDonagh, will explore the ground breaking, new Papal

Encyclical on the environment, Laudato Si’. On November 21, Donal Harrington will lead a training and enrichment day for Pastoral

Council Members in the western region.

The faith renewal events are part of Knock’s Witness to Hope project, which aims to put

Knock at the centre of faith renewal in Ireland, as well as promoting the Shrine as an

internationally renowned site for pilgrimage.

Fr Richard Gibbons, PP and Rector at Knock Shrine, said faith renewal is a central part of

Knock’s development

“Without the deepening of the faith of pilgrims and visitors who come to Knock and renewing

ourselves spiritually, our work is in vain,” he said.

“This programme, brought together by our new Faith Renewal Council and in conjunction with

a raft of new initiatives at the Shrine, is a first step which will help us to become a place of

renewal for all who visit and a resource for the Church in Ireland.”

Marion’s Story, in 1989, after seventeen years of debilitating

illness, Marion Carroll was a human wreck. She could not

walk, her muscles were wasted, she was blind in one eye and

only had partial sight in the other. She had lost control of her

bladder, the muscles of her throat and her speech were

severely affected and she had a hiatus hernia, thyroid trouble

and epilepsy. That September, against all medical advice,

Marion attended the Anointing of the Sick in the Basilica of

the Shrine of Knock. When Mass was over, she stepped free

from her stretcher - and walked. Today Marion, with her

strong simple faith, is a source of light and life for thousands

of others. Her universal message unmasks fear and proclaims

the triumph of love and the victory of the human God. Hear

her story, it is a message of Hope.

About World Mission Month

World Mission Month 2016

World Mission Day is celebrated every year in every country wherever there are Catholics committed to building a better world for all of God's people, a world where everyone has all they need to live a dignified and fulfilling life. It is the day on which we reflect on the

urgency to proclaim the Gospel in our times.

Missionary activity is a response to the love with which God loves us. God's love is the spiritual energy that can make harmony; justice and communion grow among persons,

races and peoples for which everyone is searching. It is God, who is Love, who leads the Church towards those farthest away and calls us to be renewed from the original source, Jesus Christ, from whose pierced heart flows the love of God.

The God of love is the source of care, tenderness, compassion, hospitality and interest in

other people's problems, for spreading Christ's charity around the world.

Catholic Mission around the world has the responsibility of promoting a dignified and fruitful celebration of World Mission Day. This year World Mission Day is Sunday 23rd October 2016.

Why a whole month?

Because Jesus' mission of creating a world where all can live a fully dignified life is still a long way off and because this mission is central to the Catholic Church. The whole month

of October has been dedicated to reflection in the hope that all the baptised will be always more committed to Christ's mission of salvation for the world.

Children's Mission Day 26th October 2016

In Australia, Catholic Mission has designated Wednesday 26th October 2016 as Children's Mission Day to promote mission in a manner appropriate and relevant to students, and to celebrate the wonderful fundraising efforts to support Catholic Mission’s

work with children worldwide. When we allow God to act through us in love for others, bringing the fruits of the spirit into the world—reconciliation, forgiveness, justice, peace, harmony, joy, and love—we build God's family and help everyone experience fullness of

life.

We can all act to reduce poverty around the world and improve the quality of life for all our brothers and sisters of God's family. We can stand in solidarity with all who suffer exclusion, poverty and injustice and whose life is in some way diminished.

Work at living in peace with everyone, and work at living a holy

life…”Hebrews 12:14a

Prayer underpins Habitat’s work, as we seek to put God’s love into action by bringing people

together to build homes, communities and hope.

As Hurricane Matthew approaches Haiti, please pray for communities still recovering from the

devastating earthquake in 2010. Pray that God’s love will protect and comfort. Habitat has worked

in Haiti for 30 years. Pray for our staff, and their families, at this time.

In addition, please remember the specific prayer points below for our work.

Back To School

Ask God to bless young people settling

back into school. Remember especially

young people in our world who cannot

attend school due to conflict.

Pray for Habitat staff in Lebanon as they

prepare to renovate and expand 12 schools

to provide more places for refugee children.

Pray for peace in communities torn apart by

conflict so that children everywhere can

lead happy lives and grow into all that God

intended. Give thanks for peacemakers and pray that each of us do what we can to build peace in

our community and our world.

An Inclusive Environment

Pray for Habitat staff in our new Habitat

ReStore in Ballymena. Thank God for

guiding staff to overcome many challenges

and pray that He will continue to show the

way.

Give thanks for ReStore volunteers,

especially the 38% in Lisburn who

participate in supported placements. Some

suffer from mental health issues, have

learning disabilities, are at risk of social

isolation or are in the justice system.

Pray that the Ballymena ReStore will also become a safe, inclusive environment for volunteers for

all abilities and backgrounds to learn new skills and grow in confidence.

Waiting in Hope

Pray for Elena Hongu and her son Darius,

who is autistic and does not speak.

Remember them as they live in cramped

conditions; a small room with one bed.

Doctors believe a bigger place to play and

grow would make a huge difference to

Darius.

Pray Elena, Darius and all the families who

were to become homeowners at Big Build

16. Unfortunately Big Build has had to be

postponed due to changes in construction

legislation and the local government.

Remember Habitat Romania staff who worked incredibly hard to find a way though. Pray that

politicians in Romania will have the wisdom and courage to resolve the outstanding issues quickly.

Global Volunteers

Give thanks for our Global Village

volunteers who travelled with open hearts

and minds to support our partner

programmes this summer. Pray that they

will remember the relationships they built;

continuing to speak out for the cause of

safe shelter and build the kingdom of God

on earth.

Remember the families and communities

who volunteers served as they plan a

brighter future in their better living

conditions. Ask God to bless Habitat staff on the ground as they continue to find innovative ways

to serve families in desperate need.

Seeking to Discern God's Will

Give thanks for Habitat’s global God @ the

Centre Team who lead Habitat’s efforts to

remain a vibrant, effective, global Christian

organisation dedicated to demonstrating the

love and teachings of Jesus. Pray for the

team as they seek to discern God’s will as

Habitat builds a world where everyone has

a decent place to live.

Pray for the Habitat NI Volunteer Board of

Directors as they guide and oversee the

organisation. Give thanks for the leadership

of Steven Creighton who has stepped down from the Board after serving the maximum term of 9

years. Pray for Seamus McKeague as he replaces Steven as Chair of the Board.

Lough Derg 2016

Lough Derg, the sacred Sanctuary of St Patrick, is very much a living part of Irish Christian Heritage. A unique island, rich in prayer and faith, an island which has been calling pilgrims for over a thousand years, an island which St Patrick himself was called to. For many people Lough Derg provides an opportunity to step back from their lives, to take stock and examine the direction which their lives are taking. For many others it is a time to come closer to God through prayer and reflection. Lough Derg is an island of pilgrimage set in calm lake waters, offers no distraction, no artificialities or interruptions. Instead you are warmly welcomed and cared for: there are no strangers here. The island, made holy by the prayers of millions of pilgrims over the centuries, continues to provide a safe haven for rest, reflection and renewal to all who wish to ‘Come away to a quiet place and rest a while’, Mark 6:31

If you wish to find out more or if you wish to organise a group to come to the island for a One Day Retreat or a Group Tour we will be delighted to help you.

“The Gospel of the Family: Joy for the World”

http://www.worldmeeting2018.ie/

The date and the official title of the 9th World Meeting of Families were announced on 24 May

2016. Pope Francis has decided that the World Meeting of Families will be held in Dublin on 22 to 26

August 2018, with the theme

“The Gospel of the Family: Joy for the World”. The announcement of the date and theme for the 9th World Meeting of Families (WMOF2018) was

made at a press conference in the Vatican this morning, attended by Archbishop Diarmuid Martin,

Archbishop of Dublin, and the head of the Pontifical Council for the Family, Archbishop Vincenzo

Paglia. The Archdiocese of Dublin is the host diocese for this event which takes place once every three

years in different parts of the world. Addressing today’s press conference Archbishop Martin said,

“The 2018 World Meeting will be held in Dublin, but it is an event of the entire

Church.” Archbishop Martin said it was significant that Pope Francis chose the family as the theme of the first

Synod of Bishops of his Pontificate and that he launched a new methodology for the Synod which

would involve consultation with families. “Hopefully the World Meeting will be an important

milestone in the application of the fruits of the Synodal process and of Pope Francis’ Apostolic

Exhortation Amoris Laetitia”, he said.

The Dublin Meeting will be prepared for by a process of catechesis – based on Apostolic

Exhortation Amoris Laetitia (The Joy of Love) which was published last month – and this will take

place right across the Church in Ireland during 2017 and 2018. It is hoped that something of that

catechetical process will be shared with other Churches around the world, especially in Europe.

Archbishop Martin said the Dublin World Meeting of Families, more than earlier Meetings, should be a

world event even in its preparation.

“The World Meeting of Families in Dublin will hopefully be a festival of witness to the love of God

revealed in Jesus Christ. The vocation of Christian couples, supported by the Sacrament of Marriage, is

a call to witness to that love and to experience the joy of bringing the love of Jesus to those who are

troubled and challenged,” said Archbishop Martin.

It is too early to know if Pope Francis will attend the World Meeting of Families in 2018. His

programme is normally announced just a few months prior to any event. The Pope has expressed his

desire to attend, and such a visit of the Pope would bring great joy to Irish Catholics and others. But

the final decision will depend on many factors.

Given the age of Pope Francis, a possible visit of the Pope in 2018 would inevitably have a more

restricted programme than that of the Papal Visit of Pope Saint John Paul II in 1979.
