On The Way Truth and Beauty II One of the most distinctive features in Catholic architecture is stained glass windows. The beauty of Chartres Cathedral or Paris’s La Chapelle comes from their soaring, sublime stained glass. Although the windows in our church cannot compete with theirs, they still serve the same purpose of bringing beauty to the church. And yet they are not just pretty architectural adornments. They also convey the truth — about who we are as Christians and what we are about in our worship. They first teach us that in entering the church, we have entered a different place, a sacred one. The light brought in by stained glass windows distinguishes the space of a church from that of the outside world. We have entered a place intended not for secular, commercial, or political purposes but for divine worship. Thus the windows seek to impress on us a sense of holiness. They remind us of the reverence we should show for the place and elicit the wonder we should have when we come into the presence of God. This also reveals something about ourselves. The pagans of the ancient world built temples to house their gods. Christians build churches to house not just our Lord in the Eucharist but also His holy people, the Church. By reminding us of the sacred purpose of the church, the special light of the windows reminds us that we, the People of God, are holy. We have been sanctified by Baptism, and we enter into the church, God’s dwelling place, because He desires to be among us. Our windows also teach us about the saints. Each saint presents a different way of following Christ. There are many ways of living out the one true faith. As varied and diverse as we are as a congregation, everyone of us can find a saint whose life resonates with him or her. There is also a certain hierarchy. Our Lady has pride of place: in the main aisle and closest to the sanctuary. In fact, she also has pride of number: there are three different windows depicting our Lady. (Can you find all three?) Most of all, the representation of the saints in the windows reminds us of their real, though mystical, presence with us in our worship. In the first Eucharistic Prayer, the priest describes the congregation as in communion with and venerating the memory of the saints (Mary first of all). Notice, we do not merely venerate their memory, as if they are just figures of the past. We are also in communion with them because they are real, living persons.

The display of the saints in the windows, then, presents something real that our eyes cannot perceive — namely, that in our worship the Church on earth is united with the Church in heaven in praise of God. Inspired by the beauty of their lives, we join them in crying out, Holy, Holy, Holy…

“For where your treasure is, there also will

your heart be.” Luke 12:34 Jesus encourages us to build up our treasure in heaven. The world encourages us to build up our treasure in real estate, investments, and material goods. How much time are you investing in building up a worldly treasure? How much time are you investing in building up a heavenly treasure? It’s not just credit card jargon; the most worthwhile things in this life and beyond are priceless: the caring word, the sympathetic ear, the faithful heart. Find your treasure in the richness of the Sacraments, the joy in fellowship and the fulfillment found in living life as a Gospel witness.

St. Lawrence—Patron Saint of Cooks, Comedians, and the Poor St. Lawrence was a deacon for Pope Saint Sixtus II who suffered martyrdom under the reign of Roman Emperor Valerian in 258AD. As a deacon, Lawrence looked after the material goods for the Church and gave alms to the poor. Commanded by a Roman prefect to bring forth the “treasures of the Church,” so that the Emperor could use them to fund his military campaigns, Lawrence asked for three days to gather them. He then proceeded to present to the Romans the blind, lame, poor, sick, and widowed of Rome, insisting that these were the Church’s greatest treasures. The prefect was not amused and sentenced Lawrence to death by roasting on a gridiron. During the torture, Lawrence quipped, “It is well done, turn me over!” We celebrate his Feast Day every August 10. To hear more about St. Lawrence, visit http://bit.ly/2KxYwtZ.
