Welcome To Emmanuel Lutheran Church

INTRODUCTION On the first Sunday of Christmas we find the boy Samuel and the boy Jesus, both in the temple, both growing in wisdom and stature and in favor with God and humankind. We too have returned to the house of God "to sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God," who has gifted us with a savior. As the festival continues, "let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts." It is Christmas, still. PRELUDE In Dulci Jubilo J. S. Bach WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS The assembly stands. CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins.

Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God,

who shines in glory, clothes us in compassion, and bears gifts of mercy for all. Amen.

Let us confess our sins with confidence in God’s promise of forgiveness.

Silence is kept for reflection. The assembly may stand or kneel. God, wonderful counselor, we confess that we have turned from your gifts and chosen our own way. We have not made room for you in our hearts or in our world. We have lived in fear; we have not welcomed the stranger; we desire gifts that will not endure.

Forgive us our sins, known and unknown, and open us to receive the peace of Jesus dwelling in and among us. Amen. God’s lovingkindness has appeared to us in Christ our Savior. We are saved, not by anything we have done, but by God’s mercy poured out on us richly.

In the name of ☩ Jesus Christ,

your sins are forgiven. Through the Spirit living in you, God give you faith to trust Jesus, who is Love born for you, now and always. Amen. GATHERING SONG Once in Royal David’s City ELW 269 GREETING The grace of our Savior Jesus Christ, Word made flesh, born of Mary, be with you all. And also with you. PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray. Shine into our hearts the light of your wisdom, O God, and open our minds to the knowledge of your word, that in all things we may think and act according to your good will and may live continually in the light of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.Amen. The assembly is seated. FIRST READING: 1 Samuel 2:18–20, 26 (Please turn to your pew Bible, Old Testament, Page 273). Having dedicated her son Samuel to God's service, Hannah visits him every year when she and her husband, Elkanah, come to the Lord's house to offer sacrifices. God grants Hannah more children, and Samuel himself gains favor in the sight of all. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

SECOND READING: Colossians 3:12–17 (Please turn to your pew Bible, New Testament, Page 215). Just as newly baptized Christians in the early church were clothed with white robes upon arising from the baptismal waters, so all who have received God's gift of life in Jesus Christ are covered with the character of Christ. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION The assembly stands to welcome the gospel.

GOSPEL: Luke 2:41–52 (Please turn to your pew Bible, New Testament, Page 60). The holy gospel according to St. Luke, the second chapter. Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus grew up in a family that went to the Passover festival each year. It was in this environment of faithful adherence to the law that Jesus grew into spiritual maturity and an understanding of his identity and mission. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

The assembly is seated. SERMON Resident Pastor Ian McMichael

The assembly stands to proclaim the word of God in song. HYMN OF THE DAY That Boy-Child of Mary ELW 293 THE NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,* who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. *Or, "who proceeds from the Father." The phrase "and the Son" is a later addition to the creed.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING DIALOGUE

PREFACE It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ. In the wonder and mystery of the Word made flesh you have opened the eyes of faith to a new and radiant vision of your glory, that, beholding the God made visible, we may be drawn to love the God whom we cannot see. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

HOLY EUCHARISTIC PRAYER The Season of Christmas Holy God, Creator of all and Source of life, at the birth of time your word brought light into the world. In the fullness of time, you sent your Word, born of Mary, to shine in our darkness and to make us your daughters and sons. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.

Remembering, therefore, his birth and life among us, his death and resurrection, we await his coming again when all things will be restored in him. By your Spirit bless us and this bread and cup, that, held and nourished by you, we may live as your children, shining with the light of your Son. Through him all glory and honor is yours, Almighty Father, with the Holy Spirit, in your holy Church, both now and forever. Amen LORD'S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. INVITATION TO COMMUNION Come to the table where Christ meets you. Eat, rejoice, and be glad!

Invited to the Lord’s Table are all baptized Christians who celebrate with us the Real Presence of Christ in the Sacrament. The Communion is administered by “intinction,” that is, the bread is handed to the communicant and the communicant dips the bread

into the wine. If you are not able to take the wine, simply take the bread. Children are invited to come forward for a blessing. If you desire Communion, but are not able to come forward, please let an usher know. We’ll bring it to you. If you do not wish to partake of the Sacrament, simply remain seated when your row is directed to come forward.

COMMUNION When giving the bread and cup, the communion ministers say The body of Christ, given for you. The blood of Christ, shed for you. and each person may respond Amen. COMMUNION SONG

COMMUNION MUSIC: In the Bleak Midwinter Holst Jan Gazdic and Denise Larson, duettists In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan, earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone; snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow, in the bleak midwinter, long ago. Heaven cannot hold him, nor earth sustain; heav'n and earth shall flee away when he comes to reign; in the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed the Lord God almighty, Jesus Christ. What can I give him, poor as I am? If I were a shepherd I would bring a lamb; if I were a wise manI would do my part; yet what I can give him—give my heart.
