Prayer of the Day Glorious one, help us to focus on your glory and not our own. Help us to discern when to raise our voice, and when to listen to what you have to say to us. Amen.

Listening to God’s Word Please be seated. First Lesson Psalm 34:11-14

11Come, O children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the LORD. 12Which of you desires life, and covets many days to enjoy good? 13Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking deceit. 14Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God!

+ Gospel Acclamation

+ Gospel Reading Mark 10:32-45

The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark. Glory to you, O Lord. 32They were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them;

they were amazed, and those who followed were afraid. He took the twelve aside again and began to tell them what was to happen to him, 33saying, "See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death; then they will hand him over to the Gentiles; 34they will mock him, and spit upon him, and flog him, and kill him; and after three days he will rise again."

35James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to him and said to him, "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you." 36And he said to them, "What is it you want me to do for you?" 37And they said to him, "Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory." 38But Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?" 39They replied, "We are able." Then Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; 40but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared."

41When the ten heard this, they began to be angry with James and John. 42So Jesus called them and said to them, "You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. 43But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, 44and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. 45For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many."

The Gospel of our Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

Please be seated.

Message “Can You Drink From This Cup?” Pastor Fred Hanson +Hymn of the Day “We Are Called” ELW 720

+ Apostles Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living

and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Responding to and Receiving God’s Grace

+ Prayers of the People We pray for the church, the world, and all those in need.

A brief silence.

Jesus, you call us to see in new ways. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

We pray for all creation, what you have made, and what we have made. Teach us to use the fullness of our senses and the fullness of your teachings to engage the world around us. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

As we go along our daily way, give us eyes to see what lies to the left and to the right. We pray especially for those whose existence and difficulties it is difficult for us to perceive. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

We pray for those who long for healing, (especially). We pray for justice-seekers, especially (insert timely justice issues here). Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

We pray for those in positions of authority and access, and we pray for those who sit in more humble seats, that both may be led to seek you out, and follow more closely. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

Here other petitions may be offered.

With the saints of the past, and the future, we pray, for your church, and for ourselves: Mercy. Forgiveness. Foresight. Grace. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen.
