Mass Readings and Intentions
FROM FATHER TERRY J+M+J
On the first Sunday of
Lent, we always hear of
Jesus being tempted in
the desert. This year we
are given St. Mark’s
account. (Mk 1:12-15)
Lent is forty days
because of Jesus being
tempted in the desert for
forty days. One of the
things that we can say
about a desert is that it is SILENT. Like Jesus, we are
called to enter the solitude of the desert. Most of us
cannot head off to an actual desert for forty days, but
we can take time to be in the silence of God. What
can a silent place look like? It could be an empty
church, a room at home, the car with the radio turned
off, a porch, a walk by ourselves, or a barren place at
work or school. As we seek solitude with God, do not
be afraid to fast from the things that this world has to
offer. Such things as needless chatter, tv, internet,
cell phone, radio, busyness, keeping up with the
headlines, hobbies, and interests. These things are not
bad in and of themselves, but Lent is a time to create
an atmosphere of silence so we can hear Jesus’ voice.
In the silence, Jesus will speak to our hearts. We may
hear something specific from Jesus or we may not.
The important thing is that we let Jesus speak his
language to us. Something is always happening in
prayer, regardless of whether we realize it or not. The
fruit of our prayer may happen days or weeks later.
We may hear, “I love you” out of nowhere or we may
find ourselves calm in a difficult situation. This is the
result of letting Jesus speak to our hearts.
Lastly, when we go off into the desert, be prepared to
be tempted. Today’s Scripture tells us that Jesus was
“tempted by the Satan.” (13) If Jesus was tempted, so
will we. The Devil does not stand a chance against
Jesus. The Good News is that the Devil does not
stand a chance against us either IF we invite Jesus
into our lives. One of the ways Jesus combats the
Devil is through quoting Scripture. In Matthew’s
version, Jesus tells the Devil, “‘One does not live on
bread alone, but by every word that comes forth from
the mouth of God.’” (Mt 4:4) Scripture is such a
powerful weapon against Satan. We can also choose
to pray the Our Father and the Hail Mary. Another
option is to call on the name of Jesus and Mary when
we are tempted. We can say things like, “In the name
of Jesus and Mary, leave me.” Please do not become
a punching bag for the Devil. We need to fight back
with prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. May we all
have a blessed time in the desert.
We are excited to welcome Bishop Zubik and the
seminarians for Stations of the Cross and Adoration
on Friday, February 26 at St. Angela at 7 p.m. As
with the other evening Stations, it will be both in
person and livestream. All are welcome!
During Lent, those in RCIA receive special prayers
to prepare them to receive the Easter Sacraments.
This year, we have one candidate, Beverly Hazlett.
Beverly has been journeying with us since
September. She is considered a candidate because
she has already received Baptism in another faith
tradition. Thus, at the Easter Vigil, she will make her
Profession of Faith and receive First Holy
Communion and Confirmation. Since Beverly is
already baptized, she will not undergo the scrutinies
that we often see during the Lenten journey.
However, Beverly will receive a couple of
preparatory rites. She will take part in the
“Penitential Rite” next Sunday, February 28 at the 11
a.m. Mass at St. Angela. This rite is meant to help the
candidates be purified as they prepare to receive the
rest of the Sacraments of Initiation. Beverly will also
receive the “Rite of Calling to Continuing
Conversion” on Saturday, March 6, at the 4 p.m.
Mass at Corpus Christi. Similarly, this rite is to
strengthen the candidates to greater conversion of
spirit as they approach the Easter Vigil.

LENTEN REGULATIONS
1. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. The Fridays of Lent are days of
abstinence in the United States.
2. The obligation of abstinence (refraining from eating meat) begins at the age of 14. The law of fasting
(limiting oneself to one full meal and two lighter meals) obliges all between the ages of 18-59. No one
should consider this obligation lightly.
3. Those individuals who have a medical condition in which fasting may be considered harmful are not
obliged to fast, but should perform some other act of penance or charity.
4. Pastors and parents are to see to it that minors, though not bound by the law of fast and abstinence, are
educated in the authentic sense of penance and encouraged to do acts of penance suitable to their age.
5. Notable during this Lenten season is that the Solemnity of Saint Joseph falls on a Friday. Because of this,
there is not an obligation to abstain from meat on Friday, March 19, 2021, the Solemnity of Saint Joseph,
according to the norm of canon 1251.
6. All members of the Christian Faithful are encouraged to do acts of penance and charity during the Lenten
season beyond what is prescribed by the law.
7. As a general rule, a request for a dispensation from the obligation of abstinence on Fridays of Lent will
not be considered unless some serious reason is present. The attendance at social events, banquets,
wedding rehearsals or receptions, or funeral wakes are not considered sufficient reason to request a
dispensation.
