Student Created Electronic Portfolios in the Social Studies

Presented by Garth Holman & JC Link, Beachwood City Schools, & Travis Armstrong, Dublin City Schools

This presentation will focus on three tools to help students share their learning with a global audience.  It willexplore, explain and provide real-world examples of Google Maps, Google Sites used to showcase a studentcreated online textbook, and Weebly for blogging about the content--all of which are free resources available toOhio students.  These tools allow all learning styles to excel and share their learning with a wider audience. These projects and learning artifacts are then used by future classes (in our school and across the country) tolearn and inspire others to think globally.

Google Maps as a Teaching Tool in the Social Studies Classroom

The session will focus on ways to incorporate Google Maps into social studies education. The presenter willprovide an overview of Google Maps and geospatial programs, followed by a brief discussion of thesetechnologies in the learning process. Redlining is an example of institutionalized racism that led to economic disparities in �ve communities andimpacted the racial and economic makeup of the �ve neighboring school districts. This includes almost all Blackschool district neighboring an almost exclusively White school district. In 1982, a federal court order declaredthat due to segregation and economic disparities, that �ve school districts should become one. Using redliningmaps, this session will examine the �ve communities prior to the merger and the creation of the new schooldistrict. Personal re�ections will be shared as a student in one of those districts during the merger.

Environmental Cooperation: Forging a Peaceful Path in the Middle East

This session examines some of the major environmental challenges in the Middle East, particularly around waterresources, and the ways that Israelis, Jordanians, and Palestinians are cooperating to meet these challenges.Participants will develop pedagogic content knowledge about environmental challenges in the Middle East;regional cooperation among Israel, Jordan, and the Palestinian Authority to meet challenges; and environmentalcooperation as a path to peaceful coexistence.

Positioning Local Change and Local Controversy within a NationalHistorical Lens

Black Lives Matter reinvigorated civic engagement, particularly at the community level.As outcry swelled across the nation over the May 2020 death of George Floyd by policein Minneapolis, constituents across the country and in Ohio scrutinized their schools,towns, and cities for structural inequalities, proposing change. Facebook, Twitter, andnews venues became platforms for heated discussions as community membersdetermined whether to take down statues and change mascots, symbolizing a breakfrom traditions in order to create a con�uence of community history, culture, and hopefor the future, galvanized by community. This presentation invites participation fromthose teaching “in the tip” (Swalwell and Schweber, 2016) of local-level controversy andchange. Learn how schools and communities are navigating change, which comes at acritical juncture in U.S. history, and discover emerging practices for making meaning oflocal-level controversy in your own community.

How can classroom spaces be designed to empower students to explore social issues that impact their lives?This interactive session will address this question by helping participants learn to facilitate di�cult discussionsin K-12 social studies classrooms. In this session, participants will learn about the importance of positioningstudents to engage in and discuss social issues. Participants will also gain con�dence in their ability to sca�oldstudents’ ability to disagree, listen across di�erences, and develop a deeper understanding of dissentingopinions. This session is intentionally inclusive of participants across the grade bands with the purpose ofcollaboratively designing and sca�olding social issues discussions that students can have across K-12 socialstudies classrooms.

Distinguishing Fact from Fiction: Media Literacy through the Lens of NaziPropaganda

Presented by Jodi Elowitz, Nancy & David Wolf Holocaust & Humanity Center

Through an examination of propaganda promulgated in Nazi Germany, participants in this session will considerhow students can build critical thinking skills while analyzing historical and contemporary sources to becomepro�cient in media literacy. Discussion of source materials, including those featured in the Holocaust &Humanity Museum, will demonstrate the power of artifacts, documents, and photographs to engage students inhistory and begin a conversation about the role of citizens in the past and present. This session will illustratehow learning about the Holocaust can inspire students to become active citizens..

This session seeks to provide ideas and resources for teaching women's history in ways that align with thegoals of intersectional feminism. Often when women's history is taught, it is taught as if women are amonolithic category and without diversity of experience. This session presents a curriculum project that uses food to explore keywords in discussing cultural di�erences.Terms such as construction, culture, structures, and systems are frequently used when talking aboutdiscrimination and marginalization around race, ethnicity, disabilities, and other identities. Since food iscommon to all of us, but also has meanings particular to each of us, it lends itself to conversations. It also allowsfor discussion of experiences that can be very emotional and personal. We use it here to examine key concepts;then transfer the understanding of those concepts to di�erences that are problematic in our nation.

Queer Education: Preparing to Teach Underrepresented Students in aPolarizing Climate

Where does antisemitism come from? The phenomenon is over 2,000 years old, yet, courses that deal with theHolocaust don’t often consider pre-20th century history.
