The Life of St. Thomas Aquinas

Thomas Aquinas was born in 1225 in Roccasecca near Aquino, Italy. He was one of many children of a

wealthy, aristocratic family. He devoted his life to under-standing God through contem-plation, prayer, and the study of philosophy and theology.

He went to school at Monte Cassino Abbey, the University of Naples, and the

University of Paris. In 1244, he entered the religious order of the Dominicans.

Th omas wanted to become a mendicant friar—not the kind of life that was expected from a person of nobility. His family was so outraged at his wishes that they kidnapped him and sheltered him for a year, but that didn’t change his mind. He went to the University of Paris to study with the re-nown Aristotelian scholar Albert the Great, and received a degree in Th eology.

Th e rest of his life was spent teaching, preaching, and, above all, writing. His writings included works on Scripture and the sacraments. Among the most famous are the Summa contra Gentiles (1259-64), a treatise on God and creation, and the Summa Th eologica (1266-73), the classical systematic exposition of theology. Th omas was involved in every major intellectual debate of his time.

In his teachings and writings, Th omas made eff orts to bridge the gap between faith and reason. He sought to shed light on the greatest theological debates, includ-ing the Eucharistic controversies of the Middle Ages.

Th omas was an introvert. He spent most of his time alone and his favorite recreation was said to be walking around the cloister on his own. He was a man of intense prayer and always turned to prayer when he was

unable to understand something.

Physically, Th omas was a large man, tall and obese with light brown hair.

Th omas had been asked by the Pope to assist at a forthcoming church council in Lyons due to begin in May, 1274. It was said that Th omas had been invited to the council because he was considered to be one of the wisest and holiest men in the world. But on the journey he became ill.

Th omas died on March 7, 1274 and was canonized in 1323. He didn’t become a saint by the number of miracles he per-

formed. In fact, at the time of his canon-ization, so few miracles could be found in his life that it was raised as an objection against canonizing him. Th omas’ saint-hood was vested in his intellectual service of God rather than in the sort of display of supernatural power which attracted most people’s attention. He was proclaimed a Doctor of the Church in 1567, a title given to saints because of their contribution to doctrine and theology.

Th e Church celebrates his feast day on January 28. He is known as the patron saint of students, schools, and publishers, among others.

A Message from Archbishop Gregory

My Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

We must speak to them with our hands, before we try to speak with our lips.” – St. Peter Claver

Th ese simple and profound words of St. Peter Claver call us to action. Much like the

theme for the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal, “Go, Th erefore, and Make Disciples” they remind us to act upon the love of the Lord and openly share those actions of love with others. As we look to this year’s ap-peal, please refl ect on that call of love and

participate again, or for the fi rst time, in this year’s Archbishop’s Annual Appeal.

I invite you visit https://appeal.archatl.com/ to read the stories at our featured ministry spotlights, Fr. Ceballos, Kat Doyle, and Deacon Bill Donohue, and see the great impact your gift to the appeal enables. Th ese examples are just a small snapshot of the important work being done in central and north Georgia – only made possible by your generous dona-tions to the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal, the main funding source for all of the ministerial, outreach, education, formation and discipleship work of our archdiocese.

Th ank you in advance for your thoughtful giving and support of our community. May you be blessed beyond measure for all your kindness!

Gratefully in Christ,

— Copyright © J. S. Th is weekend, we celebrate the feast day of our patron, Saint Th omas Aquinas, a man who sought nothing more in life than to know and love God.

Here is a prayer in his honor that can be prayed at any time of the year:

O God,St. Th omas left a wealthy family to follow your will.Help us, like Th omas, to hunger and thirst for you, and in all things to see your will before all else.

Th omas was one of the greatest thinkers of all time.He asked new questions, helping to shed new lighton the issues of the day.Enlighten our minds, that we might be fi lled with wonder.

Among the wise, Th omas was faced with one controversy after another. He never sidestepped any arguments, and always sought the truth.Help us in all that we do to be lovers of the truth, and to seek it, no matter the cost.

Th omas spent much time in silence and in solitude.Teach us to make room for God in our busy lives, that in the silence, your voice might speak to us too.

Th omas wrote that perfection expresses itself in charity.Help us to be a people who give freely to all in need.

Th omas cherished a deep devotion to the Eucharist.Help us as we celebrate the paschal feast, to be a Eucharistic people, a people who practice love and compassion.

May our words and actions enable us a share in eternal lifewith Th omas Aquinas and all the saints in your Kingdom, where you live, for ever and ever. AMEN.

The Amen CornerKathy Kuczka

Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time: True ProphetsIn Deuteronomy today we hear that God’s very words will fi ll the mouth of a true prophet, but a false prophet will, in a manner of speaking, put mere mortal words into God’s mouth. In Mark’s Gospel, we see Jesus teaching and healing as a true prophet, one fi lled with the authority of God’s own voice. Th e whole history of our church is fi lled with both true and false prophets. Some false prophets were extremely popular and quite well-versed in scripture, and even held positions of authority. But in today’s Gospel we learn that Jesus’ fame spread because he taught with authority; he wasn’t an authority because he was popular or famous. Elsewhere, we also learn from him, in his desert temptation confrontations with Satan, that anyone can quote scripture, even against God’s purposes. Today we hear that his authority was not like that of the scribes, who held the offi cial positions of religious authority in his day. Our work is to do our best to discern the true prophets in our midst, and to be true prophets as well. Th e psalmist tells us how to do this: by not hardening our hearts when God speaks. If we truly listen to God, it will be God’s very words fi lling our mouths. — Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
