I learned debatingskills when I was in highschool at St. Pius Xpreparatory seminary. We had to develop

reasons for or against a proposal and developarguments in support of or negating theproposal. The Vietnam War and ourinvolvement in it was a hot debate topic. Wasour involvement in Vietnam a just war?

As a seminarian in 1965, when Iregistered for military service I was declared4F. This category, given to those studying forthe priesthood, meant that I was ineligible.

When many classmates left the seminaryand enrolled in secular universities, theywere subject to the draft. Some enlisted, others were drafted, and some went beforethe draft board, and asked for and receivedthe non- combatant status of conscientiousobjection. This last position was a teaching ofthe Catholic Church, clearly stated in theSecond Vatican Council.

A revolutionary change in church teachinghad occurred. Only nine years before theSecond Vatican Council in 1956, Pope PiusXII declared that conscience could not beinvoked to refuse military service in combat,if the legitimate leaders of a nation declaredwar. This was consistent with earlierteachings of the Popes.

The bishops and the Pope at the SecondVatican Council (1962-1965), changed whathad been the teaching of the church. Theystated that a Catholic could invoke hisconscience in order to refuse to serve incombat; and instead support his country in anon-combatant role.

What do you want of me, Lord? Developing ourconsciences

“We cannot fail to praise those who renounce theuse of violence in the vindication of their rights;and who resort to methods of defense which areotherwise available to weaker parties too, providedthat this can be done without injury to the rightsand duties of others, or of the community itself.”(The Document on the Church, Vatican II)

The stance of the bishops, and of the Pope incommunion with them, was not a rejection of theprinciple of self-defense and what is termed the“just war tradition”. They simply deferred to thedignity of the person’s well-formed individualconscience.

“In the depths of his conscience, man detects a lawwhich he does not impose upon himself, but whichholds him to obedience. Always summoning him tolove good and avoid evil, the voice of consciencecan when necessary speak to his heart morespecifically: do this, shun that. For man has in hisheart a law written by God.

To obey it is the very dignity of man; according to ithe will be judged. Conscience is the most sacredcore and sanctuary of a man. There he is alonewith God, whose voice echoes in his depths.”

The implication is that one must obey the innervoice of God even if the Church (cf. St. ThomasAquinas) excommunicated the person. Criticallyimportant, of course, is the proper development ofour consciences. Here we rely on our personalrelationship with Christ and the Scriptures, knowledge of the tradition of our church, and theongoing teaching of her official teachers, thebishops (Magisterium).

Peace, Father Bruce

A Memorial Opportunity

This weekend’s Gospel Reading gives us the Beatitudes. Not only are they beautiful and inspiring to listen to,they are a reflection of the ministry of Jesus for hisdisciples. Isn’t it wonderful to know that Jesus himselfwas involved in public ministry and that when we do thesame God will bless us?

Perhaps we can pause to think about what ministry(stewardship) really is. The following has beenprovided by our Diocesan Stewardship Office. Pleasetake a few moments to reflect on our own faith anddiscipleship through Stewardship which:

• provides a spiritual way of living for all ofus – a way of being in the world, particularly aswe continue to embrace the New Millenniumand respond to the Gospel call to renew theface of the Earth.

• is about the many gifts our gracious Godhas given us. It helps us to reflect upon ourgiftedness; all that we have which constitutesour treasure: Our families, friends, time, talents, skills, material possessions, finances.

• is about reflecting on our faith and on theway we live and act as disciples of Jesus.

• is about caring for all of God’s creation.

We thank God for the opportunity to be goodstewards.St. Kilian Stewardship CommitteePlease feel free to contact the Stewardship Committee at(516)249-0127 or email: [email protected]

Rediscover CatholicismBook Discussion

January 29 - Chapters 1-5February 19 - Chapters 6-11

March 5 - Chapters 12-14March 19 - Chapters 15-18April 2 - Chapters 19-21

Each session will be in the Parish Center beginning at approximately 1:30pm, immedi-ately following the 12:30pm Mass. Each session will stand alone, that is you do nothave to make a six week commitment, make as many or as few sessions as your sched-ule allows.

We all need to rediscover Catholicism. Central to the beauty and richness of the faith isthat it is constantly in need of being rediscovered. Not because it changes, because wechange. Who we are and the circumstances of our lives are constanly evolving and so atruth that we passed over a year ago may proved to be completely transformative today. As Lent this year runs from March 1 - April 13, this book, and the discussion group, could be a valuable part of your Lenten devotions.

DIOCESAN & COMMUNITY

FAMILY MINISTRY Leading By Example!

THANK YOU to everyone who has supported our Parish PBJ Gang. The project has been a wonderful success!

Our next night is Thursday, February 2nd at 7pm in the School Cafeteria.

To date we have made over 3,800 sandwiches! We have used more than 500 lbs of peanut butter and over 300 lbs of Jelly.

AND, we have used all of our supplies!

If you can donate creamy peanut butter or grape jelly that would be a big help. We are also in need ofplastic table cloths. Please drop them off in the Religious Ed Office or the Rectory office. Thank you.

On February 2nd, each person is asked to bring a loaf of bread and a jar of peanut butter or jelly. And please cover your head – baseball cap is fine!

Reserve your spot on the website at http://www.stkilian.com/pbj-gang

It is important we have an idea of how many people will be attending so we can plan properly!Thank you!

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul

If you are in need of assistance or wouldlike information about joining or contributing to theSociety, please call 516-473-9562. Leave amessage and a phone number. A member willreturn your call as soon as possible. You may visitour website at www.svdprvc.org. Please rememberthe Poor Boxes at the exits of the church. Theyare the Bread Boxes of the poor and hungry.

In the Gospel today Jesus gives us the Beatitudes, whichembody a radically alternative vision of life and we findthat God indeed calls us to blessedness.

This month, through your gifts, the Societyof St. Vincent de Paul was able to proclaimthe good news of the kingdom to the poor,by assisting families, by providing food, gifts, and paying utility and rent bills.

It is that time of the year again. Ifyou have a cold or feel one coming on,please do not receive from the chalice. Alsodo not feel obligated to shake hands at the Sign ofPeace; a smile, a word and a wave will do; and do notbe offended if someone does not offer their hand.

If you are sick there is no obligation to attendMass. Personal prayer and reflection on the scripturesis encouraged as well as viewing the Mass on televi-sion. We are all encouraged to use common sense inthese matters; to do all that we can to maintain health, wellness and limit the exposure to infection. Most im-portantly let’s keep in our prayers those of our parishcommunity who are ill and are not able to participateat the liturgy with us.

4th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME“Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will begreat in heaven.” Here, in a nutshell, is theChristian belief about the afterlife. We trust thatheaven is open to believers who accept the gift ofsalvation and follow the way of the Lord, even (orespecially) when that way is difficult!

The beatitudes in today’s Gospel give us a programfor following the path to heaven. These famouswords offer a kind of twofold image. There are, onthe one hand, the beatitudes about what we shoulddo and be: poor in spirit, meek, merciful, clean ofheart, and peacemakers. Such qualities arereflections of the nature of God in whose image weare meant to live. When we embrace and reflect thisimage to the world, there is no doubt we arewalking on the path of God’s will.

Then, there are also the beatitudes about what weare called to endure: mourning, hunger forrighteousness, persecutions and insults due to ourbelief in Jesus. These are the trials that often besetthe life of a faithful Christian—admittedly more soin some ages and areas than in others. But Jesusmakes it clear that even these trials and strugglesare a sign that a Christian is on the right path, notthat God has abandoned him or her, but that thereward of heaven lies around the corner.

One of the greatest consolations of our faith is thateven when life does not unfold according to ourown perfect designs, even when there is suffering todeal with, even when we do not have great successin the eyes of the world, we can maintain hope andpeace as we await the “reward” of the just. Theeternal happiness of heaven will be worth everyounce of temporary trial here on earth.

Sometimes I wonder what this world will look likewhen my children get to be my age. Everythingseems to be changing so rapidly and much of thatchange doesn’t seem to be for the good. I do think insome ways the Church is experiencing resurgenceand a strengthening, but it will have to in the face ofan increasing culture of atheism and selfishness.

Of course, I bet my parents wondered the same thingwhen I was a child. As much as things change, theyremain the same. When Jesus gave his Sermon on theMount, I would guess some parents there werehaving the same kind of worries. But Jesus proposeda way of life in the beatitudes that wascountercultural then and is countercultural now.

In his book, Life of Christ, Fulton Sheen said this:“The Sermon on the Mount is so much at variancewith all that our world holds dear that the world willcrucify anyone who tries to live up to its values.”Living a stewardship way of life means bringing thebeatitudes into our daily lives in a profound way. However, it also means living in a way that othersmay not understand or they may even turn away fromus because of it. But with the reward in the end beingthe kingdom of heaven, the choice is really a matterof life and death, eternally speaking.Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS

In today’s competitive world, many people do notsee justice and humility as virtues to acquire. YetJesus makes a big point of giving us the beatitudes asthe blueprint to follow for our lives. Being poor inspirit, meek, thirsting and hungering forrighteousness, being merciful, clean of heart, andpeacemakers are all hallmarks of the true discipleand a child of God. After doing all these things, however, the true disciple must be prepared forpersecution. Are you really ready to become a truedisciple?

Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS
