The gos- pel speaks of wise men, sometimes called magi. It does not speak of kings, it does not say they were three, nor that one of them was black, neither does it mention their names. All these details were added over the centuries by popular stories. The true name of today’s feast is “Epiphany of the Lord”, which means the revelation of Jesus to the world. The invisible God revealed himself in a visible way in his Son Jesus. God physical- ly entered our human history in Jesus, something we can never fully understand. The wise men were not Jews, they were pagans. Yet they found the child, while the doctors of the Law, the experts in Scripture, did not recognize him in their midst. For God, there is no distinc- tion of persons, salvation is offered to everybody. The condition is a matter of the heart: willingness to listen and look for God, willingness to change our ways in order to conform with God’s will in our lives.

REFLECTION Today’s solemnity is popularly known as “Three Kings”. The gos-pel speaks of wise men, sometimes called magi.

God physical-ly entered our human history in Jesus, something we can never fully understand. The wise men were not Jews, they were pagans. Yet they found the child, while the doctors of the Law, the experts in Scripture, did not recognize him in their midst. For God, there is no distinc-tion of persons, salvation is offered to everybody. The condition is a matter of the heart: willingness to listen and look for God, willingness to change our ways in order to conform with God’s will in our lives.
