JUST FOR NEW PLAYERSBecoming a Life Master

By Leslie ShaferMany years ago, after a session at a local

regional, I went in search of my friend who wasplaying in the newcomer section. The scores wereabout to be posted and I saw that she had a shot atfirst place. In fact, she did win asection top. Theremay have beensomeone in Chinawho didn’t hearher screams ofexcitement onwinning her firstred masterpoint. Idid a little dancemyself, trying toget out her way.

“That’s wonderful, Elaine! Now, let’s go getlunch.”

“Wow, red points! You know, Leslie, red ismy favorite color. I look really good in red, too.”

I could see that this was going to take awhile. “Well, I think the restaurant’s soup du jouris tomato. You should be ecstatic. Let’s go.”

We got her matchpoint scores, prize and ahand record and were finally on our way. Wryly, Inoted that we walked on red carpet. As weentered the dining room, I saw that the curtains, chairs and menus were also in red. I finallyrealized that I had entered (eerie music swells)“The Red Zone.”

After placing our orders, we picked up ourhand records. Glancing around the room, Inoticed a familiar face two tables away from us.“Pssst, Elaine. See that guy over there? That’sPaul Soloway. He has over 40,000 masterpoints!”

“Really?” Her eyes widened. “Do you knowhow many of them are red?”

Masterpoints are awarded in certain colors, and you must have a minimum number of pointsin a variety of colors to reach Life Master status. The most common is black points, which you canwin in a club duplicate game. Most silver points

are awarded atsectional tournaments, but they are alsoavailable in specialgames at clubs. Thegames are referred toas STaCs (SectionalTournaments at Clubs). The elusive red andgold points come fromregional tournamentsand NABCs.

New requirementsfor attaining LifeMaster status will takeeffect Jan. 1 for playerswho join after Dec. 31or who let theirmemberships lapseafter that date beforebecoming LifeMasters. Currentmembers who maintainactive status canqualify under existingrules. Under the newrules, players will need500 masterpoints withat least 50 gold;another 50 red or gold;75 silver and 75 black.Current requirements are 300 total points with atleast 25 gold, another 25 red or gold, 50 silverand 50 black.

Two ways to mine for gold points at thisNABC:

1) Knockouts: Also known as KOs. Scored byIMPs (as are Swiss teams), your team plays asession against another team (see TournamentTerminology below). Whoever wins that matchadvances to the next round. Usually there are fouror more rounds. If you win two matches, you willwin some gold points. This is the easiest way towin your gold points.

2) Section top or overall placing in Strat A orB of a two-session open pairs. My first two gold

points were achieved this way. Being first in yoursection in Stratum A (open) or B (usually up to2000) will net you some gold points for thatsession. Placing in the final for both sessions ofthe event will also win gold. But you need to bevery good or very lucky (sometimes both) to besuccessful in this event.

Opening lead: ♥A.Bidding commentary: West’s passed-hand

takeout double shows 9-11 HCP, plus support forthe unbid suits. In addition, West is likely to havefour hearts, the unbid major. North’s jump to2NT is “conventional.” It is the equivalent of alimit raise because a jump to 3♠ after a takeoutdouble is considered preemptive. South, with aminimum and balanced hand (the pits), signs offat 3♠.

Defensive commentary: West cashes threehearts and shifts to the ♦J.

Play commentary: As South, you see that

West, a passed hand, has already turned up with10 HCP, so East must have both black kings. There is still a chance. Win the ♦Q, cash the ♠A,continue with the ♦A and ♦K, stripping that suit, and exit a spade. On a good day, East will have♠K x and be forced to return a club. KnowingEast has the ♣K makes it easy to play the ♣Qand make the contract. If West is marked with the

♣K, play a low club from dummy hoping Easthas the jack.

If a passed hand turns up 10 HCP, play thepartner for any missing queen, king or ace. If apassed hand turns up with 11 HCP, play thepartner for any missing jack, queen, king or ace.If a passed hand turns up with 12 HCP, you areplaying against a very conservative bidder!

Tournament Terminology 101If you’re confused by the terms used to

describe the different types of bridge eventsplayed at clubs and tournaments, you’re notalone. Here is a list of some common bridgeevents with explanations.

Knockout teams: an event in which one teamof four, five or six players – with four playing at atime – plays another team. The losers areeliminated or “knocked out,” and the winners playother winners until only one winning teamremains.

The length of a KO match may vary from asingle session to a full day (the Vanderbilt andSpingold) to a multi-day event (the BermudaBowl).

Bracketed knockout teams: a KO in whichteams are divided into groups – usually of 8, 16 or32 teams – based on their masterpoint holdings. The top group – Bracket I – and all other groupscompete in a separate event with their own set ofwinners.

Compact knockout teams: a shorter versionof Bracketed KO teams.

Swiss teams: an event in which a team offour, five or six players – with four playing at atime – plays other teams in seven-, eight- or nine-board matches. Team A sits North-South at Table1 and East-West at Table 2 while Team B sitsEast-West at Table 1 and North-South at Table 2.The results are compared and scored byInternational Match Points (IMPs).

Pairings for the first round are random.Pairings for succeeding rounds are determined bya team’s win-loss record or victory point total.

International Match Points (IMPs): themost common method of scoring Swiss teamsmatches. Scoring example: if Team A scores plus620 for bidding and making 4♠ on a particulardeal and Team B scores only plus 170 (they didn’tbid the game), the difference is 450 – whichconverts to 10 IMPs. The IMP chart is shown onthe inside of your convention card.

Victory Points (VPs): a method of scoringSwiss teams matches. After the scores arecompared and converted to IMPs, the IMP total isconverted to victory points. A team’s VP total maybe used to determine its next opponents and itsfinal standing.

In the three-card ending, declarer had the ♦A 9 7 opposite ♦K J 5. Mayefsky knew Bruce hadfive hearts, and he had followed to two spades andthree clubs. Inferring that West’s ♣10 was a truecard, that gave him 2=5=3=3 shape, meaning hewas a slight favorite to hold the ♦Q.

Backing his judgment, Mayefsky played adiamond to the king and followed with the jack, pinning East’s doubleton 10 to bring home a toughcontract.

The Ruling: The director determined thatthere was no infraction or failure to Alert. Therefore, the table result of 3♠ by South makingsix, N-S plus 230, was allowed to stand.

The Appeal: N-S appealed. All four playersattended the hearing. In response to a question bySouth (before South bid 3♠), North stated thatEast had explained after some thought that Westmust have heart tolerance.

East stated that he had explained West's bid aswilling to play 2♠ or 3♥. East denied a significantpause before the explanation.

North responded to East's statement byindicating that such an explanation was, in effect,"pass or correct."

The committee determined that the 2♦ bid is aMid-Chart convention and, as such, required apre-Alert before the start of play. No pre-Alert wasgiven.

The Decision: The committee determined thatin spite of the failure to pre-Alert the 2♦ bid andthe failure to Alert the 2♠ bid, the damage to N-Swas self-inflicted. Per Law 21B3, E-W gained noadvantage from the irregularities. Therefore, thecommittee allowed the table result of 3♠ by Southmaking six, N-S plus 230, to stand for both sides.

The committee determined that the appeal hadmerit.

For want of a clubBy Barry Rigal

6NT is the best slam, but 6♥ on a trump leadwas very awkward. Roz put in the ♥10, and whenit was covered by the jack, she was in deepdoodoo.

She recovered nicely, however. She played aheart to dummy’s ace, entered hand with the ♦Aand drew trumps, then cashed another highdiamond. This was the ending:

♠ 10 9 5 2♥ —♦ —♣ K Q 2

North had made a fatal error by pitching aclub. Now declarer could find the very stylishcounter of cashing the ♦K and exiting with the♣J. North won and was endplayed. Whicheverblack suit he returned gave declarer two extratricks. Had North retained the ♣4, he could havewon the club and exited with a low club to taketrick 13 with his remaining club honor.

Final-board bluesBy Barry Rigal

The last board of the session is often one whereavoidable mistakes are made – how can you waitthose extra 30 seconds to read the burners?

After East’s reasonable but ill-timed 1♥overcall, we were warned against playing 3NT. AsNorth, I knew that Eric Leong, my partner, might beusing 3♠ as a try for 3NT, but I thought bidding thenotrump game was against the odds.

Indeed, Leong had already assured himself areasonable result simply by playing 5♣.

On the lead of the ♥2 (third and fifth), East wonthe jack and played a top heart. Leong ruffed, thenguessed very well to play trumps from the top. Westwon the ♣Q – dummy pitching the ♥Q and East the♥A – and exited with a heart.

Leong ruffed, advanced the ♦J and went upwith the king, cashed the ♦A, noting the fall of the9, then ran the ♦10, pitching a spade, and claimed11 tricks when it held.

So who made the mistake?East deserves some blame. The lead of the ♥2

should have alerted East to the fact that no morehearts were cashing. That being so, although a spadeswitch could pick up a vulnerable queen in partner’shand, declarer was surely marked with only fourspades – so dummy’s threatening diamond spotsrequired a spade shift at trick two to dislodge thatentry from dummy.

If East shifts to a spade, declarer will give upthe spade entry at once, or West will dislodge itlater.

Finally, might West have considered a deviousshift to the ♠J at trick six? If declarer gets that rightand works out how to play diamonds from there, good luck to him!

A guide to successfulpartnerships

By Cathy HunsbergerBridge is a

partnership game. This isthe first tenet of bridge. Itis the basis for allsubsequentunderstandings, agreements and happycohabitation at the bridgetable.

Choosing a partnerWhat do you look for in a partner? Ideally,

you want someone you can be in sync with, whosemind set is similar to yours. You want a partneryou can communicate with, argue with, laughwith, and in the end, start over with.

How does your mind work? Do you like a bidto mean the same thing every time? Are you veryliteral? Very creative? Do you like to experiment? These are factors that should influence how youcomplete your convention card, how you chooseyour partners, how you approach the game, butthese factors are often overlooked.

If you want a simple game, a light hobby, astraightforward convention card, you are not goingto be happy with someone who takes the gamevery seriously, wants to try any and allconventions, and analyzes each deal to the nthdegree. Know yourself and choose your partnerswisely.

Choosing a systemNow you and your partner must choose and

learn the language with which you are going tocommunicate. Go over your convention card. Askquestions.

What are the best conventions? They are theones that suit you, your personality, your game, your approach to the game. They are the ones youand your partner agree on and discuss thoroughly.

It is amazing the different ways there are toplay almost every convention. Don’t just ask, “Doyou play Gerber?” Once you agree to playGerber, ask your partner, how do you playGerber? Do you play straight Gerber, do you playit only over notrump, do you play 1430 mini-maxiGerber, etc. Almost all partnershipmisunderstandings arise from lack of thoroughdiscussion.

Remember, too, you are striving to create aunified system – one that works and flowstogether, that meshes. Check for duplications. Doyou have two bids for the same hand type? Doesthe card seem more than you can handle rightnow? Too much too soon is a common source ofmisunderstandings and friction. You wantpartnership rapport, not necessarily everyconvention in the book!

Keeping a partnerOne factor that should remain constant,

however, is flexibility. That convention card isonly a piece of paper. A system is not written inconcrete. It can be amended, changed, modified. It can be screwed up in a ball and thrown away!

If a system or convention isn’t working foryou and your partner, change it, try somethingnew, experiment. Ask an expert, read a book, takelessons.

If you are a serious student of the game, keepa log with all your bidding agreements. Upgrade itregularly. Go over it with your partner at leastonce a month. Constant memory enhancement

helps reduce misunderstandings. Ask if you areboth happy with this system. A happy partner isone of the keys to success.

MisunderstandingsAnd finally, when misunderstandings do occur

– as they inevitably will – stay calm and cool. Askyourself what you would want your partner to sayto you if you had made that stupid bid! After all,you both have the same goal in mind. Thesemisunderstandings can be good learning tools andengender illuminating discussions. A “bad” bidcan lead to bigger and better things. You may eventhank your partner for his or her mistake!!

End resultSo, partners, discuss your goals, learn your

own special bridge language. Be flexible andopen-minded. Use your misunderstandings to leadto even greater understandings. Then you willalways have a good time at the bridge table, witha great chance for success.

Eats, shoots & LeavesEats, Shoots & Leaves: The Zero Tolerance

Approach to Punctuation is a non-fiction bookwritten by Lynne Truss. In the book, published in2003, Truss bemoans the state of punctuation inthe United Kingdom and the United States, anddescribes how rules are being relaxed in today’ssociety. Her goal is to remind readers of theimportance of punctuation in the English languageby mixing humor and instruction.

By Mark Horton

The title of the book is an amphibology—averbal fallacy arising from an ambiguousgrammatical construction—and derived from ajoke on bad punctuation:

A panda walks into a café. He orders asandwich, eats it, then draws a gun and proceedsto fire it at the other patrons.

“Why?” asks the confused, surviving waiter,as the panda makes towards the exit. The pandaproduces a badly punctuated wildlife manual andtosses it over his shoulder.

“Well, I’m a panda,” he says. “Look it up.”The waiter turns to the relevant entry and, sure

enough, finds an explanation:“Panda. Large black-and-white bear-like

mammal, native to China. Eats, shoots andleaves.”

You may be wondering why I have mentionedthis, but I’ll come to that in a moment. With theRabbi deciding that a trip from Santa Fe toWashington was a bridge tournament too far, I hadto decide how to occupy my free time on Friday.Picking up a few stories from the first session ofthe Life Master Pairs was on the agenda (when theSpingold starts on Monday, I have plans for aseries of articles entitled “The Rabbis ofSummer,” although to some extent this depends ondiscovering an appropriately composed team).

Anyhow, I decided to watch a few dealsinvolving the German superstars Sabine Aukenand Daniela von Arnim – I assure you it hadnothing to do with the fact that they were sittingNorth-South and are easy on the eye.

By now I expect you are ready for a fewdeals, so turning reluctantly to the play….

(1) Not forcing.(2) Three-card club support.It’s not clear if East’s support double (a

convention that in my opinion is a candidate forinclusion in 25 Conventions You Don’t Need toKnow) might have made it possible for West tobid 3NT with slightly better clubs. As it was, East-West sold out to 3♠ and discovered that lettingyour opponents play in their optimum contract isnot the way to generate a significant number ofmatchpoints. switch to the queen or ten of diamonds, and ifWest leads a heart declarer will put in the jack andthen try a low spade, but neither lead is obvious, and West selected the ♣J. With an awkward hand, East decided to startat a low level, but made a strength-showing bid athis next turn. When West (having rejected a raiseto 2♣ on the first round) now came to life, Eastnaturally went on to game. North gave somethough to bidding on (the winning action here) butshe had just enough defense to persuade herotherwise. Minus 400 was a modest score forNorth-South.

At this juncture the point of my introductionmay become clearer as I left the table to take awalk over to the Zoo with Ray Lee (CEO ofMaster Point Press). During the course of ourvisit, we checked out the Giant Pandas, who wereactively engaged in munching their way throughvast quantities of bamboo. By the time we gotback to the hotel the session was coming to anend.

this was an awkward pattern for North to describe, and South chose a bad moment to take a view bypassing a forcing bid. With 3NT making, North-South achieved one of their poorest results of thesession.

You might make 5♣ on the North-South cards, but it’s not exactly a gimme. On a diamond lead, declarer has to win in hand and play a low heart. If the ♥Q takes the trick, declarer has to hazardthe spade finesse.

With such a defensively orientated hand, I’mnot sure East should have bid 3♥, and he paid aheavy price.

South led the ♠4. Declarer took North’s jackwith the ace and played the ♣Q. North won withthe ace and switched to her diamond. South wonwith the ace and returned the 9 for North to ruff.South ruffed the spade return and gave Northanother diamond ruff. A third spade was ruffed bydeclarer’s queen and overruffed by South, whocashed the ♣K for three down, plus 300 and avirtual top.

I imagine most pairs bid these hands to 6♥ or6NT. With nine top tricks, the only issue on thedeal is how to tackle the heart suit. The bestchance for four tricks is to start with the ♥K,intending to finesse the jack on the next round. When the 10 comes up, you play low from Northand cover East’s card. Depending on the caliber ofyour opponents, you might decide to play West for♥Q 10, but any Life Master worth their saltshould be up to dropping the 10 from ♥10 x.

I leave you to draw your own conclusionsabout anyone who tackled this suit by startingwith a low heart to the ace.

I’ll leave you with what was probably thewildest hand of the session:

It’s a matter of individual taste as to howmany clubs East should bid on the first round.Over the modest overcall South was stretching along way with 3♣. I wonder if South would havefound the heart lead that is necessary to defeat5♣? (So perhaps North should have bid 3♥ on theway to 4♠?) When North led the ♣10, declarermade an overtrick.

There are four ACBL districts in Canada:District 1 (Quebec and the Maritime provinces),District 2 (Ontario and southern Manitoba),District 18 (Alberta, Saskatchewan, and northernAlberta) and District 19 (British Columbia).

Toronto, Ontario is a regular hive of bridgeactivities, and the city has been the host of someof the most successful NABCs in history. The1986 Summer NABC in Toronto, for example, attracted more than 21,000 tables of play, makingit the second-largest NABC ever. Other Canadiancities to serve as NABC hosts include Vancouver,Winnipeg and Montreal.

Canada offers a slate of terrific regional eventseach year, including Penticton on beautiful LakeOkanagan in British Columbia. Penticton regularlyattracts more than 3000 tables each year, making itthe regional largest tournament in Canada —- theGatlinburg of the North.

The auction to 4♠ was uncontested. Korbel,West, led the ♦K. Declarer ruffed and played alow club to the queen and ace. Steinberg, East, continued with the ♦A, declarer again ruffing. Two more rounds of clubs allowed declarer toshed a heart from dummy, but when declarerplayed the ♥A K, East ruffed the king and playeda third diamond. Declarer ruffed yet again andplayed a heart toward dummy.

Korbel ruffed with the 7, overruffed bydummy’s king. This was the position:

Declarer can succeed at this stage by playing atrump to the closed hand, extracting West’s lasttrump, and ruffing a heart in the dummy, butdeclarer ruffed another diamond in his hand (Eastpitching a club) and tried to ruff a heart in dummy.West, however, ruffed high in front of the dummyand played yet another diamond. Declarer triedruffing with dummy’s 4, but East overruffed withthe 5, and took the last trick with the ♠3,smothering dummy’s ♠2!

card filled out legibly and on the table throughouta session. Both cards of a partnership must beidentical and include the first and last names ofeach member of the partnership.

If a director determines that neither player hasa substantially completed card, the partnershipmay play only the ACBL Yellow Card and may

use only standard carding. This restriction may belifted only at the beginning of a subsequent roundafter convention cards have been properlyprepared and approved by the director. Further, thepartnership will receive a 1/6 board matchpointpenalty for each board played, commencing withthe next round and continuing until the restrictionis lifted. In IMP team games, penalties shall be atthe discretion of the director.

If the director determines the partnership hasat least one substantially completed conventioncard but has not fully complied with ACBLregulations, the director may give warnings orassign such penalties as he deems to beappropriate under the circumstances.

The objective of these warnings and penaltiesis the encouragement of full compliance withACBL regulations.

ROSEMARY O’LEARYSATURDAY-SUNDAY SIDE GAME SERIES

By Marjorie GazzolaRosemary O’Leary, my Wednesday bridge

partner and friend, died suddenly in February 2006at the age of 80. She was a lifelong bridge playerand a Silver Life Master who played all over theworld while traveling with her Army officerhusband, Joe. Years ago, Rosemary, with herpartner Liz Hezlep, ran tournaments where theirchildren caddied. Many of her friends knewRosemary by her nickname, Didgy. Rosemarybecame my partner when I was a novice, and wehad great fun playing together for eight years. Inaddition to her enthusiasm for the game, Rosemarywill be remembered for her sly sense of humor, her immaculate attire and her vast collection ofgigantic earrings. Rosemary was very proud of her

large and loving family, including her husbandJoe, their four children, 10 grandchildren and 10great-grandchildren.

TODDY GOSS AND KAY MEEKSSTRATIFIED OPEN PAIRS

Today’s two-session regional pairs event is inhonor of Kay Meeks and Toddy Goss, who taughttheir daughters (NABC Tournament Chair MargotHennings and NABC Charity Chair Joan Lewis) tovolunteer. Kay was always the first person peoplecalled when someone was sick or a family neededan extra helping hand. She headed many church andcivic committees to help ensure the spirit of

volunteerism was kept alive wherever she could. Now 91, Kay no longer plays weekly social bridgewith her friends, but credits the game we love forhelping keep her mind sharp for all these years. Atage 95, Toddy is still sharp as a tack and hervolunteerism is going strong: She continues tovolunteer at her local hospital as a substitute. Shealso plays bridge with a group of “younger” friends(they’re only in their eighties) in Kittery ME. Kayand Toddy have met several times at their daughters’homes in Washington over dinner during theChristmas holidays — good food and friends being aspecial combination their daughters also learned wellfrom their mothers.
