CARE FOR CREATION – The Franciscan Tradition for 800 YearsFor the millions who have read stories about the life of St. Francis of Assisi, it cannot be a mystery why he is the Patron Saint of Ecology. There are many stories about his deep love and care for creation – from his compassion for his fellow creatures to his love and reverence for every natural thing on Earth. He viewed everything he encountered as the direct creation of God, and therefore something to be respected and cherished.

His quaint habit of referring to inanimate objects as “Brother” and “Sister” was intentional – not only to remind himself of his kinship with them but to alert others to that fact: we are all family, made by the same God. In his canticle of the creatures, Francis refers to “Sister Water – useful, humble, precious and pure.” If resources are viewed in this sentimental manner, how could one exploit them and turn them into commodities? His love was emotional, not an intellectual notion. He also made a plea for all living beings, saying “If you have men who will exclude any of God’s creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow men.”

In the recent Encyclical Letter of the Holy Father On Care For Our Common Home, Pope Francis states: “I believe that Saint Francis is the example par excellence of care for the vulnerable and of an integral ecology lived out joyfully and authentically . . . He was a mystic and a pilgrim who lived in simplicity and in wonderful harmony with God, with others, with nature and with himself. He shows us just how inseparable the bond is between concern for nature, justice for the poor, commitment to society, and interior peace.” Pope Francis continues: “The poverty and austerity of Saint Francis were no mere veneer of asceticism, but something much more radical: a refusal to turn reality into an object simply to be used and controlled.”

To meet Secular Franciscans and see how they seek to follow in the footsteps of Sts. Francis and clare in the 21st century, you are welcome to attend the monthly meeting, the third Saturday of each month in the chelsea center.

For more information, call Susan Jacobs, OFS, in the Parish Office or at 941-922-1080.
