PASTOR’S COLUMN

I wanted to draw your attention to a couple of new

things that we are doing this Holy Week. On Maundy

Thursday, our Deacons will be inviting us to share in a

simple meal before we join together in our service. What

more appropriate thing to do when we are about to

remember Jesus’ Last Supper? It is at this Maundy

Thursday service where we especially remember Jesus’

new commandment for His disciples, “Love one another,

as I have loved you.” I hope you can join us.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION

As we travel our Lenten Journey together once more, we focus on our personal relationship with Jesus. In Faith Formation we are reading scripture and researching Jesus’ ministry and friendships. We are learning what life was like for the people in Jesus’ time and place. We are also discovering how Jesus’ words and actions resonated profoundly with the people He touched, just as they do today. Together, we have talked about what we might “fast” as a way of making room for prayer, reflection and time with Jesus in our lives on a

Page 5: SUNDAY, MAR. 4TH THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT...SUNDAY, MAR. 4TH COMMUNION SUNDAY THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT We will celebrate the Sacrament of Communion today, and Pastor Paul will be preaching

5

daily basis. That time each day to prepare ourselves for Resurrection Day. Of course, part of that preparation is caring for others through giving of both gifts and time. Some of the opportunities we have during this Lenten season…

SOUPER BOWL OF CARING

The Super Bowl may not have turned out the way we wanted it to but… The Souper Bowl of Caring did! Thank you to all of the children and youth who helped to decorate, cook, serve and collect donations at our annual tailgate party. It was a great success! We collected HUNDREDS of pounds of non-perishable food and raised $250 in grocery cards, all donations are to benefit The Westborough Food Pantry. Thank you to everyone who came, cooked, ate and donated!

FAMILY FUN RETREAT

On our Family Fun Retreat we will give of our time, talents and finances by volunteering at MERCY MEALS in New Bedford. We will cook, serve, share Christ’s Love (and clean up!) at the Saturday morning breakfast service. Mercy Meals serves breakfast six days a week averaging about 75 people. Usually, it is a walk-through food line selecting what has been prepared. We have an opportunity to host a sit down meal service with an a la carte breakfast offering! We will wait on tables, serve guests, and both provide and prepare the food.

That weekend we also have an opportunity to help our sister church,

Pilgrim United Church of Christ. The church’s vision is to impact and renew New Bedford, Massachusetts and beyond, with the transforming message of Jesus Christ through words and actions. A place where

everyone is welcome. We will be volunteering

by helping with painting, replacing glass, and other small building projects around the church.

WORDS OF APPRECIATION

Dear friends, Many thanks to the carolers who serenaded me at my home before

Christmas. It was an inspiring beginning to my holiday season. Thank you also for the lovely poinsettia. It’s beautiful color brightened my home, and added to my Christmas joy

- Eleanor Myers

Dear Members of the Flower Committee,

On Sunday, December 17, 2017, the poinsettias that had graced the chancel during the Church’s morning service were scheduled to be distributed to us older folk. I was away, so Nancy Gage took the poinsettia designated for me and gave it a comfortable home until I returned from my trip. She delivered it to me on Sunday, December the 24th where it graced my home until the last red petal fell off on Sunday, January 7, 2018. This brief note is to thank you for giving me a beautiful holiday plant and to thank Nancy for her thoughtfulness.

Sincerely, Adrianna Baltimore

Pastoral Counseling Centers of Massachusetts

February 11, 2018

Dear members and friends of The Congregational Church of Westborough:

I write to you as the Church’s representative to the Pastoral Counseling Centers of Massachusetts to report on The Centers recent activities.

First, a bit of history for folks who may not be aware of it. In 1979, the clergy of Westborough decided that their ministries would be strengthened by the presence of a pastoral counseling center in the town and approached the Worcester Pastoral Counseling Center. A satellite center in Westborough was born under the name of the Triborough Pastoral Counseling Center owing to its service to the towns of Westborough, Northborough and Southborough. In 1984, the Westborough office became independent and was renamed the Assabet Valley Pastoral Counseling Center, a name more familiar to most of us.

In October of 2011, a joint board of directors meeting of the now separate organizations agreed to a strategic merger of the two centers. The official incorporation of the new organization was filed in 2011 as the Pastoral Counseling Centers of Massachusetts with a main office in Westborough and satellite offices in Worcester and Hudson.

In the last 10 years we have averaged about 3,500 client visits a year from people in over 90 Central Mass communities. This number was down in 2017 as the result of staff departures. Since then we have hired additional staff members and are interviewing two more professionals this month. If things continue as expected, we will continue to improve our outlook for the remainder of the year. Our efforts and expertise continue to address a broad spectrum of timely issues facing individuals of all ages, couples, families and caregivers. We work with people experiencing grief and loss and dealing with behavioral problems, parenting concerns, youth and teen development issues, anxiety and depression, PTSD, abuse and shame, and bullying among other things.

An important part of our Westborough location on Church grounds, apart from our ongoing relationship with the interfaith community in Westborough, is the fact that our clients tell us over and over again that coming to see us in a warm, home-like setting is an important part of their forward progress. The shared soul of our missions is a large piece of who we are as a counseling service.

Last year we began a program to increase the amount of our annual rent. We paid an additional $100 a month, $1,200 for the year. This year we are paying a second increase of $1,200 for the year.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, Executive Director Mary Taber and the staff, I would like to take this opportunity to express our deep appreciation for your support in both the past and current years. For over three decades we have been fortunate to be your partners in faith and your tenants as we served those in the community wo are in need of our services to deal with issues, pain, and loss and who work towards redirecting their lives on a better path.

In God’s love,

Steve Swets Church representative to the Pastoral Counseling Centers of MA and member of the Board of Directors.
