Anointing of the Sick
Sunday, December 2, 2018 1:30 pm after the noon Mass
Anointing of the Sick is a sacrament which gives one grace as strengthening and peace and courage to overcome the difficulties that are associated with disease, illness and dying. The essential rite of the sacrament consists in the priest laying hands on the sick, anointing with blessed oil, and praying "Through this holy anointing may the Lord in his love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit. May the Lord who frees you from sin save you and raise you up."

Pastor’s Corner
Dear Friends and Families of St. James,
This coming week students in grades 5 & 8 will take the ACRE Test. The Assessment of Catholic Religious Education (ACRE) test measures knowledge of the faith as well as beliefs, behaviors, attitudes and practices of the faith. ACRE carries the endorsement of the National Catholic Education Association (NCEA) and is based upon the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Its purpose is to help the school and the teachers find our areas of strength and areas for growth.
Today at the noon Mass our 7th grade and Kindergarten students will be present in their uniforms and participating in the Liturgy.
It’s not too early to start thinking about next school year! We will begin accepting applications in January which is just around the corner!
God Bless you,
Noreen Maricich

Advent Wreath
The Advent candles readily demonstrate the strong contrast between darkness and light. In the Bible, Christ is referred to as the “Light of the World” contrasted with the darkness of sin. Human history spanned long ages before our prophesied Savior would finally make his appearance, and God’s promise to make all
things new through him. As his Advent, or “coming,” draws nearer another candle is lit, with each candle dispelling the darkness a little more. Thus, the Advent wreath helps us to spiritually contemplate the great drama of salvation history that surrounds the birth of God Incarnate who comes to redeem the human race. Each candle represents 1,000 years. Added together, the four candles symbolize the 4,000 years that humanity waited for the world’s Savior—from Adam and Eve to Jesus, whose birth was foretold in the Old Testament. Dear Friends and Families of St. James,
Together In Mission Goal Reached
Thank you so much for the wonderful support to complete our Together In Mission campaign last weekend. With the generous support of so many families we were just able to meet the goal. Our efforts combined with the generosity of every parish in the Archdiocese makes sure that our poorest parishes remain a vital part of proclaiming the gospel to all our communities.
We begin the Advent Season this weekend and mark our journey to the celebration of Christ’s birth and the gift of life He has given us. December will be a very busy time for all of us and many things are happening at the parish. Please review the pages of this bulletin for all the wonderful events and programs we have planned through our ministries.
May God continue to bless you and your families,
Msgr. Mike

Catholic Q & A Q: In a recent Mass marking The Solemnity Of Our
Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, Father Emanuel
spoke about scripture readings whose focus was the
fulfillment of the messianic nature of Christ on earth. It
was a thought-provoking mass which brought in the
factors of the alpha, the omega, and a kingdom not of
this world that became problematic for the secular world
of that age, as well as the Jewish community who envi-
sioned a more traditional kingship. What does the cate-
chism say?
A: We can read in the catechism about the essence
of a messiah who came to testify to the truth. Topics
include expectations of a messiah, the view of the
messiah in Judaism and Christianity, the suffering of the
messiah, and the kingship of Jesus. It’s enlightening
reading.
Also enlightening and inspirational in the awesome
realm of King of Kings and Lord of Lords is that the Saint
James Choir will lead us in singing praise to our eternal
Lord through the artistry of Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus
from his magisterial classic oratorio, The Messiah.
We are blessed to see that the gospels, the catechism,
insightful pastoral leadership and our music ministry
each serve to enrich a faith that honors a king, and sings
to the heights of heaven, “...and he shall reign for ever
and ever...” J.P. Alegria
Gospel Reflection
Tribulation. Wildfires. Tsunamis. Moral corruption. Dis-
ease. War. We tend to associate these things with the
end times, and perhaps for good reason! In today's Gos-
pel, Jesus says: "People will die of fright in anticipation of
what is coming upon the world." Not exactly putting us in
the Christmas spirit, is it? During Advent, we anticipate a
celebration of Christ's first coming. There is a quiet still-
ness about our waiting, or at least we try to encourage
that in ourselves. Perhaps we have an Advent devotional
or we take time to pray together as a family around the
Advent wreath.
But Jesus did not come only once into history. During
Advent, we remember that he will come again. You may
remember the rapture craze in the early 2000s, when a
series of books and movies envisioned a future where
Jesus was coming soon and all the true believers had
been whisked away. Everyone else had one more
chance to repent before things really went to
hell...literally, in this case!
But is that what Jesus is talking about here? The truth is,
we don't know what Jesus' Second Coming will be like.
The actual return of Christ - though sudden and perhaps
frightening to some - should not frighten us. Despite all
the stories we may have heard about the apocalypse,
the advice of Jesus is not to hang our heads or cower in
fear. "Stand erect and raise your heads because your
redemption is at hand." In a certain sense, we are al-
ready living in the end times. We already encounter great
tribulation. We all find it easy to get distracted or discour-
aged in the grind of daily life. Today's Gospel reminds us
that vigilance for God's presence is needed now.

Turkeys wanted for the Feed the Needy Christmas Dinner
We remember our brothers and sisters that are living in vehicles or on the street. specially sad are the children raised in these conditions.
Every year, the Feed the Needy ministry offers a home cooked turkey dinner for these families.
Please donate a turkey for this meal. It would be greatly appreciated to have the turkey cooked and sliced.
If frozen, due by Dec. 10. If fresh, due by Dec. 12. If cooked, by Sat, Dec. 15. Deliver to Kavanagh Hall M,W,F 12-2 pm. Volunteers are needed to assist in
cooking the dinner on Sat., Dec. 15. Contact Barbara Mullen 310.540.2756. Thank you!
It’s Getting Cold Outside As we remember and acknowledge the blessings we have received this year, we often overlook how insulated we are from the elements. Rain or shine, cold or hot, we can easily take for granted how comfortable we are regardless of the weather or season.
Consider the homeless children of God, our brothers and sisters who have to deal with changing weather and seasons. If you have an unneeded sleeping bag taking room in storage or have any new dark clothing such as sweat shirts and pants, hoodies, gloves, stocking caps, consider how you can be a blessing to someone.
Drop off these items (especially sizes M to XL) at the Parish Office. You’ll not only warm a fellow brother or sister in Christ; you’ll feel the warmth in your own heart during this Christmas season.
Page 5 December 2, 2018
You desired, Lord, to keep from us your indignation and so did not spare Jesus Christ, who was wounded for our sins. We are your prodigal children, but confessing our sins we come back to you and your beloved Son. Confession Sat. 4pm or by appointment.
Everyday Stewardship
Waiting is not always so easy. If you lack patience, like
me, you probably want whatever is going to happen to
just happen already. I remember waiting on the births of
my children. There was the time I sat with my dying fa-
ther in the hospital. One year, we waited to see if our
oldest child got into the college of his choice, or any col-
lege at all, which was nerve-wracking.
So, to make the time pass more easily, and because it
is prudent and wise, we make preparations. We put to-
gether nurseries, go over last will and testaments, and
look through endless college mailings. Then, when the
event finally happens or our fate is unveiled, the prepa-
ration ends. Either you have prepared well or you didn't.
Unlike events in our lives that only happen once, we
have been through Advent many times before. Even
though this is the case, when Christmas arrives many of
us will think we missed it again, and next year will be
the year we really get into Advent. Of course, there is
no promise of next year. What if you knew this was your
last Advent ever?
I once read a book about how to live your life as if you
only had one year to live. The author said that doing this
provides incentive for a real commitment to living life to
its fullest. You notice things for the first time. You make
plans that you always put off. You tell people what you
always wanted to say.
I hope all who read this have many wonderful years
ahead of them. However, let's approach this Advent like
it is our last. I bet Christmas will seem that much sweet-
er. And who knows, we may find a new and improved
way to live all year long. --Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS
Social Justice Ministry In the spirit of this giving season, we encourage you to do something special this year, something maybe a little out of your ‘comfort zone.’ Widen your horizons and join the St. James Social Justice Ministry on a visit to our sister parish, San Miguel Church, and their Learning Center on Thursday, December 6th. You won’t regret it! If you would like to carpool to San Miguel, contact Sheila Anderson at 310.374.0551 to reserve your seat. We will meet in the St. James Church parking lot after 8 am Mass (by 8:45 am) and return at about 11 am. You may also drive separately, if preferred. Meet at the Presentation Learning Center by 9:30 am. Park at San Miguel School, 2270 East 108th Street in Los Angeles. The Learning Center is across the street at 2216 E. 108th Street. If you would like to make a donation, gift certificates to Ralph's, Food 4 Less, or Target would be most appreciated. Thank you!

On November 9, 2018, the Departments of Justice and Homeland Security proposed new regulations that would allow the government to ban any person trying to seek asylum at a place other than a port of entry. This is described as a “limited suspension” but, after 90 days, the secretaries of state and homeland security and the attorney general will inform the president if the ban should be lifted or extended. Under our country’s asylum laws, any person who is either “physically present” or “arrives” in the United States, no matter if said person arrived “at a designated port of arrival” or not, is entitled to apply for asylum. The new rules would temporarily end this humane policy and would likely open the door to further erosion of the protections we extend to those seeking asylum. Desperate migrants, many of them fleeing violence or persecution with their families, cannot be expected to know the new rule – only that asylum, as a matter of international law, may be within reach once they touch American soil. Should we disregard people with credible asylum clains who don’t present themselves at a port of entry? The proposals will be open to public comment for 60 days (November 9, 2018 through January 7, 2019 before they can be finalized. You may submit comments identified by EOIR Docket No. 18-0501 at http://www.regulations.gov. For questions or help in submitting comments, contact John Duncan: [email protected] 626.319.2947
