is:
“THE NEED TO BE STRONG IN THE LORD”
(Ephesians 6:10)
Suffragan Bishop Charles L. Smith, Pastor
From the Pastor’s desk. . .
I have written this week with the Lord’s help about Giving
Thanks to Our God for His Grace. The scripture text for
this article comes from the book of Ephesians. This book
is the fifth book of the New Testament section called “The
Epistles.” This book was written by the Apostle Paul
during his first imprisonment in Rome about AD 62.
Ephesians is one of Paul’s prison epistles. There are four
prison epistles namely Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians,
and Philemon. The book of Ephesians is divided into two
sections:
① (Ephesians 1:1) to (Ephesians 3:21). It is doctrinal
and speaks about the church’s heavenly calling.
② (Ephesians 4:1) to (Ephesians 6:24). It is practical
and speaks about the church’s earthly walk.
For this article, we want to focus our attention upon
(Ephesians 2:5-9) which says = Even when we were dead
in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace
ye are saved;) And hath raised us up together, and made
us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: That in
the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of
his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of
yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any
man should boast. In this passage of scripture, the
Apostle Paul writes about a time when we were not
saved. And when we were dead in sins. God quickened
us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved: ) (Titus
3:4-6) says = But after that the kindness and love of God
our Saviour toward man appeared, Not by works of
righteousness which we have done, but according to his
mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and
renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which he shed on us
abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour. And hath
raised us up in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: that in
the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of
his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.
(Ephesians 2:5-7). Then Paul wrote some more about
grace. He said, “For by grace are ye saved through faith;
and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of
works, lest any man should boast.” (Ephesians 2:8, 9).
Someone might ask the question, “What is grace? The
Greek word for grace in (Ephesians 2:8) is charis (khar-
ecé) #5485 which means = benefit, favour, or gift. Grace
is a kindness granted by God upon the whole human
family, and grace is God’s gift to us! When God gives us
the undeserved benefit of his grace, it is a favor done to
us without expectation of us returning this same favor to
him. His grace is free, and a part of God’s attributes and
character. It shows his loving-kindness toward “us.” His
grace cannot be earned; it is the gift of God: not of works
lest any man should boast.
Many theologians and scholars of the Bible get the wrong
interpretation of (Ephesians 2:8, 9), and we have heard
them teach on TV and radio that all we need for our
salvation is grace. They bypass (John 3:5-8) and (Acts
2:37, 38) which are saying that we need a new spiritual
birth; which includes the remission of our sins by baptism
in water in the name of Jesus, and the infilling of the Holy
Ghost, aka the spirit of Christ in our heart, and in our
spirit before we can be saved. We must be born again of
water and of the spirit. Jesus said in (John 3:7) marvel
not that I said unto thee ye must be “born again.”
(Romans 3:24) says = Being justified freely by his grace
through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. “Grace
and truth” came to us through Jesus Christ; he was full of
grace and truth. (John 1:14, 17). We need to give our
God thanks for his amazing grace. We have justification,
peace with God, and forgiveness of our sins because of
God’s amazing grace. The two works of grace are ① our
salvation and ② divine empowerment to do great works,
and to sustain us in our times of human weakness.
The apostles needed grace to be upon them as they went
out to witness of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. (Acts
4:33) says = And with great power gave the apostles
witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great
grace was upon them all. (Acts 14:3) says = Long time
therefore abode they (Paul and Barnabas) speaking boldly
in the Lord, which gave testimony unto the word of his
grace, and granted signs and wonders to be done by their
hands. The Apostle Paul also received divine
empowerment in his life when he had a thorn in his flesh.
Read: (II Corinthians 12:7-10). Notice especially (II
Corinthians 12:9) which says = And he said unto me, My
grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made
perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather
glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest
upon me.
Let us look back in our minds and reflect upon God’s
grace and how it brought salvation to all of us; and about
God’s divine empowerment to do great works and how he
has and is sustaining all of us in our human weakness:
Then Give Thanks to Our God for His “Amazing Grace.”
Thank you, LORD, for your Grace!!
Suffragan Bishop Charles L. Smith, D.D.
November 1, 2020
Praise the Lord everyone,
When I look back over my life, and I think things over, I can
truly say that I’ve been blessed; I have a testimony!
First, I thank God for all He has done for me. Thank you,
Lord, for one more year. Second, I want to shout out a thank
you to all who took the time out to help me celebrate my 84th
birthday. My heart rejoiced at the outpouring of your love for
me. It really lifted my spirit. Again, I say thank you and God
bless each one of you.
As we enter into another month, let us continue to give God
our best praise. As the Men’s Choir sings …. Every day is a
day of thanksgiving. The world sets aside one day to give
thanks, but we must praise Him and thank Him every day for
what He has done, what He is doing and what He is going to
do for us.
Take time out and reflect back and thank Him for His
goodness and His mercy. He has done great things for us;
He will continue to bless us if we continue to serve Him and
live holy.
As the song writer said, “I’m glad to be in the number one
more time.”
Grace and Peace to all,
Evangelist/Lady Mildred E. Smith
