Berkeleyhillscc.org October 2020 Issue Berkeley Bulletin Member Guest Results Even with the cancellation of most of the social events for the Member- Guest, we had a full field and another fantastic tournament. As in year’s past, the top two teams in each flight made the Shootout on #10 tee for the alternate shot format. We had a record amount of teams chip off on each hole to determine who moved on to the next hole. When the dust finally settled, Eric Schoppmeyer & his guest Kyle Bock beat Andrew Miller & Mike Trapani in a chip off on #18 to win the 2020 Member-Guest. Thank you to all who participated in the tournament again this year! WGA Club Championship The ladies held their Club Championship at the end of September. Mrs. Dana Seay is the 2020 Ladies Club Champion with a score of 180! Cathie Bennett is the 2020 Net Club Champion with a score of 147 with ConstanceWoods coming in a close second. Maureen Ryan is the Ladies Senior Club Champion this year. Thank you to all who played in the Ladies Club Championship! Berkeley Hills Men’s Ryder Cup On October 20th and 21st the Men’s Ryder Cup will take place in the morning.Teams are comprised of the top point earners from the Net, Gross, and Masters division tournaments through the year. The Captains will be the top two point earners from the Net division. Congratulations to all those who will qualify for this fun event. BHSR Ringer Tournament The Berkeley Seniors played their two day Ringer Tournament on September 2 & 3. Barry Lakas was the winner in a scorecard playoff with Paul White with a score of 67. Harvey Gammon came in third with a score of 68 and Al Huff, Hugh McGonagle, Michael Thompson and Paul Spofford tied for third at 69. Thank you to all who played in this fun event. What a great year for growing too much grass!! We had a 2-week delay on the over-seeding of the Driving Range tee. We applied the seed on Monday, September 29. We feel confident that we will see germination in 7-10 days. Once that happens, we will cut back on the amount of water we apply, let the tee dry, and mow it to prepare for opening. I ask during this time we are waiting for the tee to open, please do not hit off the grass, even with drivers. The new mats have a slot for a tee and it works very well. We are raising the mowing heights of the greens to get ready for winter. Once it begins to cool off consistently, we will begin to see the greens speed up. Hole #17 green has areas of the green that is still scarred from the verticutting, we are applying liquid fertilizer to the areas twice per week to help continue to fill in these areas before winter. Last, but not least, the leaves!! They are coming, and we will be blowing and vacuuming them every day. Any questions, please stop and ask, Chris Purvis

Several members and staff infected with COVD19 - Decisive Action to protect membership:Over the past 4 months three staff and three members have reported positive tests and mild illness related to COVD19 infection. Each has taken rapid personal action to quarantine and report their illness. Their taking personal responsibility, letting us know about their condition allows the rest of us to protect ourselves. Without a vaccine to provide immunity, self-reporting and contact tracing is essential to stop the spread. Their actions are to be commended. Remember, wearing masks and practicing social distancing at this point, and for many months to come is the only way to protect ourselves. Since the onset of the COVD19 Pandemic, we have requested if you are sick, stay home. If you may have contracted the virus, please let us know.

Ringer Tournament – September 2 and 3:This unique tournament was played over two days. Posting hole by hole gross and net score on the first day on the second day each player had a chance to improve the first day score on each hole. Congratulations to the winner Barry Lakas and runner-up Paul White. Complete results appear in this Berkeley Bulletin for October.

Match Play: Berkeley wins final regular season match at Polo - We make the playoffs:Match Play Captain Barry Lakas reported “Results are finally in for our Sept. 16 match at Polo CC. I am happy to report that we took 9.5 points while Polo took 8.5. We disputed the original score following the match which was Polo 13 Berkeley 5. However, after the match we discovered that Polo used erroneous and highly inflated handicaps for their players in lines B and C. The match results were protested. After extended investigation and review- and with our input - the NASMGA match play coordinator awarded Berkeley an additional 4.5 points due to the inflated Polo handicaps. Notable matches on Sept .16 were Ed Odmark and Paul Spofford taking two points with Jim Andersen and Hugh McGonagle taking all three of their points. We are currently in first place in our division. However, second place Fairways of Canton needs to complete their match with Old Atlanta before we know if we remain in first or drop to 2nd. Barring any last minute changes, we will reach the playoffs.

North Atlanta Senior Men’s Golf Association Cancels Tournaments for 2020 – Play Days Scheduled. All of the 8 scheduled tournaments for 2020 have been cancelled to comply with government restrictions related to the COVD19 Pandemic. A number of clubs have offered to host a limited number of golfers on their course. If you wish to play in any of these Play Day events, you must be a member of the Berkeley Senior Men’s Golf Association. Future events include White Columns CC on Wednesday 10/14 and Big Canoe on Monday 10/26. The cost and number of players will vary.
