WELCOME TO ST. JOHN'S LUTHERAN CHURCH
PRELUDE
ANNOUNCEMENTS
BRIEF ORDER FOR CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS
P: In the name of the Father, and of the ☩ Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.
P: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and
from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts
by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love
you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ
our Lord.
C: Amen
P: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not
in us. But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will
forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Brief Silence
Most merciful God,
C: we confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free
ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and
deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved
our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus
Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so
that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the
glory of your holy name. Amen
P: In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us,
and for his sake God forgives us all our sins. As a called and
ordained minister of the Church of Christ, and by his authority, I
therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in
the name of the Father, and of the ☩ Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen

GATHERING HYMN Be Thou My Vision

GREETING
P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the
communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
C: And also with you.
KYRIE
PRAYER OF THE DAY
P: The Lord be with you.
C: And also with you.
P: Let us pray.
Almighty God, our redeemer, in our weakness we have failed to be
your messengers of forgiveness and hope in the world. Renew us
by your Holy Spirit, that we may follow your commands and
proclaim your reign of love; through your Son, Jesus Christ our
Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God,
now and forever.
C: Amen

FIRST READING: Isaiah 43:16-21
The prophet declares that long ago the Lord performed mighty deeds
and delivered Israel from Egyptian bondage through the waters of the
sea. Now, the Lord is about to do a new thing, bringing the exiles out of
Babylon and through the wilderness in a new exodus.
16Thus says the LORD,
who makes a way in the sea,
a path in the mighty waters,
17who brings out chariot and horse,
army and warrior;
they lie down, they cannot rise,
they are extinguished, quenched like a wick:
18Do not remember the former things,
or consider the things of old.
19I am about to do a new thing;
now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?
I will make a way in the wilderness
and rivers in the desert.
20The wild animals will honor me,
the jackals and the ostriches;
for I give water in the wilderness,
rivers in the desert,
to give drink to my chosen people,
21the people whom I formed for myself
so that they might declare my praise.
A: The word of the Lord.
C: Thanks be to God.
6
PSALM: Psalm 126
1When the LORD restored the fortunes of Zion,
then were we like those who dream.
2Then was our mouth filled with laughter,
and our tongue with shouts of joy.
3Then they said among the nations,
“The LORD has done great things for them.”
4The LORD has done great things for us,
and we are glad indeed.
5Restore our fortunes, O LORD,
like the watercourses of the Negev.
6Those who sowed with tears
will reap with songs of joy.
7Those who go out weeping, carrying the seed,
will come again with joy, shouldering their sheaves.
SECOND READING: Philippians 4: 8–13
Although in prison, Paul speaks of the importance of relying on God for
our every need. without God we live as the world lives, with God we can
face any trial that might arise. 8Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is
just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable,
if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think
about these things. 9Keep on doing the things that you have learned and
received and heard and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with
you. 10I rejoice in the Lord greatly that now at last you have revived your
concern for me; indeed, you were concerned for me, but had no
opportunity to show it. 11Not that I am referring to being in need; for I
have learned to be content with whatever I have. 12I know what it is to
have little, and I know what it is to have plenty. In any and all
circumstances I have learned the secret of being well-fed and of going
hungry, of having plenty and of being in need. 13I can do all things
through him who strengthens me.
7
A: The word of the Lord.
C: Thanks be to God.
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Lord, Let My Heart Be Good Soil
8
GOSPEL: John 12:1-8
P: The Holy Gospel according to JOHN, the 12th chapter.
C: Glory to you, O Lord.
Judas willfully misinterprets as waste Mary’s extravagant act of
anointing Jesus’ feet with costly perfume. Jesus recognizes that her
lavish gift is both an expression of love and an anticipation of his burial. 1Six days before the Passover Jesus came to Bethany, the home of
Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. 2There they gave a dinner
for him. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those at the table with
him. 3Mary took a pound of costly perfume made of pure nard, anointed
Jesus’ feet, and wiped them with her hair. The house was filled with the
fragrance of the perfume. 4But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (the
one who was about to betray him), said, 5“Why was this perfume not
sold for three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor?” 6(He
said this not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief;
he kept the common purse and used to steal what was put into it.) 7Jesus
said, “Leave her alone. She bought it so that she might keep it for the
day of my burial. 8You always have the poor with you, but you do not
always have me.”
P: The Gospel of the Lord.
C: Praise to you, O Christ.

Verses 1-4

APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit
and born of the virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into hell.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen

WORDS OF INSTITUTION
In the night in which he was betrayed,
our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks;
broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:
Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.
Do this for the remembrance of me.
Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks,
and gave it for all to drink, saying:
This cup is the new covenant in my blood,
shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin.
Do this for the remembrance of me.
LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
forever and ever. Amen.

WELCOME VISITORS: We welcome you to St. John’s Lutheran
Church and we hope that you will enjoy our worship to God. Please
take time to fill out a “St. John’s Ministry Notes” card that is located in
the bulletin. Once you have filled that card out please place it in the
offering plate. We hope that you will consider making St John’s your
worshiping community.
NURSERY: St. John's loves having children in church, but we want
parents to know that we do have an unmanned nursery available
downstairs in our Education Wing if needed. The nursery is wired for
sound so you can still participate in the service. Take the ramp
downstairs which is located next to the upstairs restroom. The nursery is
located on the left-hand side of the long hallway four doors down.
HANDICAP SEATING: We ask that you please remember to reserve
the shortened seating in the middle of the sanctuary for those who need
them. Thank you.
HEARING DEVICES: St. John's offers "Hearing Devices" to
individuals who need them. They are located in a basket in the
Narthex. They have been updated and are ready to be used. The
batteries are not in the device but are in the basket and need to be
installed to use. If you wear a hearing aid you will need to remove it and
put the ear bud directly into your ear. You are welcomed to bring your
own ear buds. If you have any questions or need any help contact Linus
Mann at 812-351-0612. Our Pastor uses a microphone but sometimes
extra help is needed to help enhance your worship experience.

LENTEN PROJECT: This year’s Lenten project will be collecting for
Community Chew. This is a donation only funded
project that provides food for children in the Jasper
schools. The Fuel Club sends food home with
middle school age children every Friday after school. These are children
that receive either free or reduced price lunches. Every Thursday during
the summer months from 12:00 to 3:00 they provide a hot meal to
children from Kindergarten through 8th grade. They also include some
type of religious program for those children attending in the summer.
Items needed are peanut butter, jelly, Spaghetti-Os, Raviolis, beef jerky,
fruit cups, Ramen noodles, individual portions of macaroni and cheese
and also cash. They request cans with pull top lids because some people
don’t have can openers. Donations of socks and deodorant are also
needed. Donations can be left in the Narthex during Lent until
Easter. Thank you for your contributions. The Outreach Team.
SUNDAY SCHOOL OUTREACH PROJECT: The Sunday School
project continues through May. They are supporting the Dubois County

Foster Care System.

chicken soup, canned chicken, vegetable oil, sugar, toilet paper, diapers
size 3,4,or 5, toothpaste, razors, soap, shampoo, liquid laundry soap,
feminine products, Kleenex, paper towels, dish soap, coffee, stuffing
mix. Monetary donations are also accepted.
21
LOVE PACKAGES: This year we will again be collecting Bibles and
religious materials during the Lenten season for Love Packages to ship
around the world. In 2018 Love
Packages, based in Butler, Illinois,
shipped 1500 TONS of religious materials that had been donated by
ordinary people just like us. Already in 2019, Love Packages has
shipped 160 tons! Love Packages began in 1975 when one man gathered
his excess Christian literature and began to ship it overseas. Soon
friends learned what he was doing and they brought boxes of materials
to be shipped overseas. How many of us have excess religious materials
at home no longer being used? If it isn't being used, it is being
WASTED! The materials we collect are gathered locally and picked up
by volunteers who hold it until there is a large enough amount for a
truck to take it all to the warehouse in Butler, where it is sorted by other
volunteers and packed for shipping. Love Packages sends the materials
overseas in 20-ton shipping containers that costs somewhere between
$3600 and $5900 to send. The ENTIRE costs are supported by free will
offerings from churches and individuals who are concerned about
wasting God's Word. Acceptable materials are all Bibles, New
Testaments, and Bible portions---new or used, all Christian books and
paperbacks, all daily devotionals, cassettes, reference books,
commentaries, videos, and records. Please go through your drawers,
closets, attics, etc. and pack up any religious materials you are no longer
using. We will have a box on the railing near the handicapped-
accessible ramp in March. We thank you in advance for any donations
you can make.
DONATIONS FOR CRISIS CONNECTION: The Outreach Team
will be collecting hotel or travel size bottles of shampoo, conditioner,
lotion and soaps. These items will be donated to
Crisis Connection. Donations can be left in the
Narthex. Thank you
22
WELCA SPRING GATHERING: The Women of the ELCA
Evansville Cluster will have the Spring Gathering at St. John’s on
Saturday, April 27th. Registration begins at 10:00 a.m. Registration fee is
$7.00. The theme is “Small Moments Matter.” Please RSVP by April
22nd to Diann Zehr, 812-481-0081 or [email protected]. A physical
offering of socks any size, peanut butter, or jelly will be collected and
donated to Community Chew.
COOPERATIVE MINISTRY NEEDS YOUR INPUT: For several
years now the Lutheran churches of Dubois County [Redeemer, St.
Paul’s, Christ, St. John’s (Boone Township), and St. John’s
(Crossroads)] have been meeting and working to plan some ministry
events and activities together. Drawing participants from five
congregations rather than one enables us to not only have greater
potential involvement in activities, but it also encourages us to see each
other as part of the same family in the Body of Christ. We have already
had a number of successful events in the past few years and we wish to
plan more, for there is great potential for the kinds of things we can do
among our five congregations. But to do so we need your help. When it
comes to planning events that either require an outlay of money in
advance or extensive planning, we need to know that there is enough
interest and ability to participate in the activity to make that activity
successful. Therefore we are asking for your feedback on several
proposed activities as well as suggestions regarding others. Some of the
proposed activities are as follows:
1. A High School youth event to be held at a rural location in Dubois
County, including bonfire, Bible study, and games (either an afternoon-
early evening activity, or possibly a camping overnight). We would be
looking to do this either over the summer, or shortly after school starts
(maybe as late as early October if needed).
23
2. A Five Church picnic (location to be determined). A chance to
gather for fellowship, food, and games in a park or park-like
location. We are open to suggestions for the time of year that would be
best for doing this.
3. An Adult Retreat (perhaps at the new Bear Creek lodges at Lutheran
Hills) on the topic of sharing our faith or prayer. We would be looking
at doing one overnight (on comfortable beds), either an evening to an
afternoon or an early afternoon to a morning.
4. A High School Youth Retreat, perhaps at Temple Hills camp (near
Stendal). What time of year would work best for this?
5. A Marriage Enrichment Event to be held somewhere locally.
If you would be interested in participating in any of these activities and
or have some further ideas regarding these or other activities, please talk
to Pastor Catherine or another participant in the cooperative ministry
meetings and/or write your comments on the Ministry Notes card found
in your bulletin. Thank you.
