The parish mission will begin on Saturday, March 3 with the 3:00 PM Vespers followed by the Divine Liturgy and conclude on Wednesday, March 7 with the 7:00 PM Pre-Sanctified Liturgy. Archpriest Petras will preach at the Liturgies on Saturday and Sunday and at the Services on Monday and Tuesday and at the Pre-Sanctified Liturgy on Wednesday. Confession times will be scheduled during the parish mission. The parish mission gives us a wonderful opportunity to prepare for Our Lord’s Resurrection on Pascha. More information concerning the parish mission will be published in future parish bulletins. “HEART TO HEART”: EVANGELIZATION SEMINAR FOR PARISHIONERS & CLERGY Our February event for our 50th Parish Jubilee will take place on Sunday, February 25, 2018 after the 9:00 AM Divine Liturgy in the parish hall. As Christians we are all called by Christ to share our faith with others. Just prior to His Ascension into heaven Christ told the Apostles: “Go, therefore and make disciples of all the nations.” This command of Christ is also directed towards us. It is not always natural and easy to evangelize, to spread the good news of Jesus Christ to others and welcome others to join the Church, the Mystical Body of Christ. Nonetheless, as disciples’ of Christ we must accept this challenge and pray that the Holy Spirit grant us the means to answer the call. During the presentation “Heart to Heart” we will look at our responsibilities to evangelize, the challenges we face in evangelizing others, preparing ourselves for evangelization through better learning our Byzantine Catholic faith handed down to us and actual steps and a plan to evangelize others here in the Valley. We will also learn about the Icon of Evangelization and explain about parishioners taking the Evangelization Icon home for a week and praying for God’s blessings on our evangelization efforts.

Sunday of Meat-fare

Today’s Gospel reading is Matthew 25:31-46, the parable of the Last Judgment. It reminds us that while trusting in Christ’s love and mercy, we must not forget His righteous judgment when He comes again in glory. If our hearts remain hardened and unrepentant, we should not expect the Lord to overlook our transgressions simply because He is a good and loving God. Although He does not desire the death of a sinner, He also expects us to turn from our wickedness and live (Ezek. 33:11). This same idea is expressed in the prayer read by the priest after the penitent has confessed his or her sins (Slavic practice). The time for repentance and forgiveness is now, in the present life. At the Second Coming, Christ will appear as the righteous Judge, Who will render to every man according to his deeds” (Rom. 2:6). Then the time for entreating God’s mercy and forgiveness will have passed. As Father Alexander Schmemann reminds us in his book GREAT LENT (Ch. 1:4), sin is the absence of love. It is separation and isolation. When Christ comes to judge the world, His criterion for judgment will be love. Christian love entails seeing Christ in other people, our family, our friends, and everyone else we may encounter in our lives. We shall be judged on whether we have loved, or not loved, our neighbor. We show Christian love when we feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, visit those who are sick or in prison. If we did such things for the least of Christ’s brethren, then we also did them for Christ (Mt.25:40). If we did not do such things for the least of the brethren, neither did we do them for Christ (Mt.25:45).

MEAT-FARE SUNDAY/SUNDAY OF THE LAST JUDGEMENT

EPISTLE: CORINTHIANS 8:8-9:2

But food will not commend us to God; we are neither the worse if we do not eat, nor the better if we do eat. But take care that this liberty of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak. For if someone sees you, who have knowledge, dining in an idol's temple through your knowledge he who is weak is ruined, the brother for whose sake Christ died. And so, by sinning against the brethren and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ. Therefore, if food causes my brother to stumble, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause my brother to stumble. Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are you not my work in the Lord? If to others I am not an apostle, at least I am to you; for you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord.

GOSPEL: MATTHEW 25:31-46

“But when the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then He will sit on His glorious throne. All the nations will be gathered before Him; and He will separate them from one another, as the shepherd separates the sheep from the goats; and He will put the sheep on His right, and the goats on the left. “Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in; naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me.’ Then the righteous will answer Him, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, and feed You, or thirsty, and give You something to drink? And when did we see You a stranger, and invite You in, or naked, and clothe You? When did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’ The King will answer and say to them, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me.’ “Then He will also say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels; for I was hungry, and you gave Me nothing to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me nothing to drink; I was a stranger, and you did not invite Me in; naked, and you did not clothe Me; sick, and in prison, and you did not visit Me.’ Then they themselves also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not take care of You?’ Then He will answer them, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.’ These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”
