Mark 1:1-3

Page 17: Sunday School Lesson 2009 09 06

Mark 1:1-3

1The beginning of the gospel about Jesus Christ, the Son of God.  2It is

written in Isaiah the prophet:    "I will send my messenger ahead of

you,       who will prepare your way"—

3"a voice of one calling in the desert,    'Prepare the way for the Lord,

make straight paths for him.' "

Page 18: Sunday School Lesson 2009 09 06

He is Unique

• He is the beginning of the “Good News”• He is Jesus = ‘Yahweh is salvation’• He is the Christ = ‘anointed one’• He is the ‘Son of God’ - NOT created,

but eternal• He is the fulfillment of OT prophesy– Isaiah 40:3– Exodus 23:20–Micah 3:1

Page 19: Sunday School Lesson 2009 09 06

Focal Passage

Mark 1:7-13

Page 20: Sunday School Lesson 2009 09 06

Mark 1:7-13

7And this was his message: "After me will come one more powerful than I, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. 8I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."

Page 21: Sunday School Lesson 2009 09 06

Mark 1:7-13

9At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10As Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on

him like a dove. 11And a voice came from heaven: "You are my Son, whom I

love; with you I am well pleased."

Page 22: Sunday School Lesson 2009 09 06

Mark 1:7-13

12At once the Spirit sent him out into the desert, 13and he was in the

desert forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals,

and angels attended him.

Page 23: Sunday School Lesson 2009 09 06

He has Power

• He is greater than John• He is humble• He is committed to His redemptive

plan• He is adored by the Father• He is empowered by the Spirit• He is part of a trinity• He is able to overcome physical

hardship and spiritual warfare

Focal Passage

Mark 1:21-28

Page 25: Sunday School Lesson 2009 09 06

Mark 1:21-28

21They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the

synagogue and began to teach. 22The people were amazed at his teaching,

because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law.

23Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an evil spirit cried out,

24"What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!"

Page 26: Sunday School Lesson 2009 09 06

Mark 1:21-28

25"Be quiet!" said Jesus sternly. "Come out of him!" 26The evil spirit shook the man

violently and came out of him with a shriek.

27The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, "What is this? A new teaching—and with authority! He even

gives orders to evil spirits and they obey him." 28News about him spread quickly

over the whole region of Galilee.

Page 27: Sunday School Lesson 2009 09 06

He has Authority

• He has authority over the scriptures– understanding – not just knowledge

• He has authority over the Spiritual realm– recognized as Holy– rebukes and drives out unclean spirits

• He has authority over people – teacher (individual and corporate)– healer

Faith Leads to Action

James 2:14-24

Page 31: Sunday School Lesson 2009 09 06

James 2:14 - 24

14What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him? 15Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. 16If one of you says to him, "Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed," but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? 17In

the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

Page 32: Sunday School Lesson 2009 09 06

James 2:14 - 24

18But someone will say, "You have faith; I have deeds." Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show

you my faith by what I do. 19You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and

shudder.

Page 33: Sunday School Lesson 2009 09 06

James 2:14 - 24

20You foolish man, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless? 21Was

not our ancestor Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? 22You see that

his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did. 23And the scripture was

fulfilled that says, "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as

righteousness," and he was called God's friend. 24You see that a person is justified by what he does and not by faith alone.
