    THE

    PASTOR’S

    PAGE

UDuring the opera season, when I wasa student in the college seminary inDouglaston, Queens, I would make ita point to go to the MetropolitanOpera at Lincoln Center. For $10, I

was able to stand in the rear of the orchestra. If I got lucky atintermission, a few dollars to the usher would allow me to finda seat in the orchestra and closer to the stage. By analogy, ourcelebration of Mass is closer to a symphony at Carnegie Hallthan an opera performance at the Met. The presider at theMass is more like a symphony conductor than a soloist in anopera.

The whole assembly participating actively and fullyengaged in the work of the Mass, is essential for fervent andtransformative prayer. Baptized Catholics, drawn to Sundayworship, need to play their instrument, their God-given voice,in the worshiping assembly. God gave us voices for the primaryreason of giving him praise, adoration and thanksgiving. Howcan we not give our voices back to the God of love; in a fullthroated chorus of exultation!

A dear friend of mine is truly tone deaf. Yet she singsthe hymns at Mass loudly and unselfconsciously. So shouldwe all! The majority of singers around us, who are not off key, will make up for any dissonance. Every human voice matters.Every human being is blessed.

The celebration of holy Mass does not belong to thepresider. It is not ‘Father’s Mass’. The celebration belongs tothe church, the whole people of God, and the body of Christ. It is Christ who celebrates the mass. It is Christ who breaksopen the Word of God. It is Christ who transforms the gifts ofbread and wine. It is Christ who feeds us with his body andblood.

Jesus Christ has been using me as an ordained priestfor 42 years, as an instrument of Christ’s saving grace. I amnot worthy, but Christ has made me worthy; as he has madeall baptized believers worthy of him. At Mass we are all expectedto use our instruments; our voices and even our bodies in worshipof the living God.

The priest prays in ‘persona Christ’ (in the place orperson of Christ). The priest does not offer the Mass, JesusChrist does. It is the Lord Jesus who is opening the Scripturesfor us; and who is breaking the bread, his body, and sharingthe cup of his blood. It is Christ who baptizes through me. It isChrist who forgives sins and anoints the sick through me inspite of my sinfulness. He has made me worthy of doing this. But there is actually only one priest, the Lord Jesus Christ!

CELEBRATING THE EUCHARIST (FINDING OUR VOICE AS ACHURCH)

By the gift of his grace, He has also made allwho are baptized, worthy of Him, a priestly, prophetic, and kingly people. How can we not sing the praises ofthe Lord and give our whole selves to him in serviceof the gospel!

When we gather for mass each week, we bringour whole selves into the assembly of God’s holypeople. We take real ownership of the liturgical action. We invest ourselves fully and consciously in theprayers, the readings, the songs and processions to thealtar. We offer ourselves along with the perfect one,Christ, the sacrificial victim. The Mass is not boringbecause we are actively engaged; body, mind and soulin liturgy, the work of the church.

When the lector and preacher proclaim God’sWord with a deep love for that Word in a convictionthat is evident to the listeners, hardened hearts aremelted. Intelligently, clearly and forcefully proclaimed, the Word draws us into the mystery of love.

St. Kilian’s worship space, our church building,is conducive to worship. It is large, beautiful, spaciousand uplifting. But the space needs to be filled with thevoices of all the instruments in the orchestra that arethe Catholic people of God. The Word of God needsto be spoken more deliberately, and enunciatedprecisely and loudly, by lectors and clergy, especiallybecause of our cathedral size worship space. Whenthis happens, when all baptized believers give voice totheir love for God in song and praise, the Holy Spiritand fire of love burns out our impurities. The Spirit ofGod present in our gathering purifies each of us of ourprejudices and judgments, our anger and lack offorgiveness. That Spirit leads us to peace andreconciliation with those who are at odds with us.

Great things will happen when we open ourhearts and minds and freely cooperate. Great thingshappen when we do not resist the boundless love ofGod. When we give voice to God’s praises in a fullthroated chorus in a full church, such a joyous Masscelebrated week after week will change us dramatically;and draw others who have been inactive or lukewarm, back in to our assembly.

    Peace, Father Bruce

    7St. Kilian Catholic Church

Illness, especially catastrophic illness, puts everything in per-spective. We realize, when facing a life threatening disease,

that nothing matters except recovering ourhealth. Concerns that preoccupied us seemunimportant as we face surgery and the possi-bility of imminent death. Loved ones, theircare, support and prayers become vitally im-portant. And as people of faith we turn toGod for healing and strength in our weakness.

Christ’s compassion towardthe sick and the numerous healings he per-formed in the Gospel accounts, tell us that heidentifies with us in our infirmities and that hecan restore us to health. In the sacraments ofthe church, Christ is with us still, forgiving

our sins, bringing us peace, and continuing to touch us withholy words in the scriptures, healing hands, holy oil, and in Hisbody and blood, food and drink for our pilgrimage home.

From ancient times, the sick have called upon Christ, present in the church, to forgive and heal. The apostle Jamesrecords a ritual for the sick in the fifth chapter of his letter: “Isanyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders (priests ofthe church) and let them pray over him, anointing him with oilin the name of the Lord; and the prayer of faith will save thesick man, and the Lord will raise him up; and if he has commit-ted sins, he will be forgiven.”

Tradition has recognized in James’ words, the sacra-ment of the sick. The sacrament of the sick is given to thosewho are seriously ill. The priest, with the gathered family andloved ones, prays for the Spirit’s healing presence, laying handsupon the head of the sick, and then anointing them on theforehead and hands with blessed oil.

No longer called last rites, this Anointing is not a sacra-ment for those only at the time of death. As soon as a person isin danger from illness or old age, it is the right time to receivethis healing sacrament. The entire church prays for recovery.Right before a serious operation is a fitting time for Anointing. It is best that the whole family gather around their loved one topray with the priest. If the sacrament is offered during Mass, the whole assembly prays for restoration to health, for strength, forgiveness, and the grace of God. The sacrament can berepeated if there is a change in the person’s condition. All sac-raments are for the living, hence the dead are not anointed. Asimple prayer for the departed can be offered by the family.

    10 St. Kilian Catholic Church

At the heart of the encyclical: “What kind of worlddo we want to leave to those who come after us, tochildren who are now growing up?”What is life’s purpose? Why are we here? What isthe goal of our work and our efforts? Does theearth need us?

We must examine our consciences to include thequestion “How am I living with all creatures andnature?”

    *Principal concepts of theencyclical:

1- The intimate relationshipbetween poor peopleand the fragility of theplanet

2- The conviction thateverything in the worldis interconnected.

3- A critique of newparadigms and forms of power that arederived from technology.

4- A call to seek other ways of understandingthe economy and progress.

5- The value that is proper to each creature.

6- The human meaning of ecology.

7- The need for forthright and honest debate.

8- The serious responsibility of internationaland local policymakers.

9- A throw away culture and the proposal of anew lifestyle.

The Gospel of Creation:1- The light that is offered by faith: spirituality

and religion are needed in the dialogue.

2- The wisdom of the biblical accounts:disharmony/creation accounts. A trifolddisharmony: God/neighbor/earth- brokenby sin.

3- The mystery of the universe-”…(theuniverse) can only be understood as a giftfrom the outstretched hand of the Father ofall.”

4- Every creature, human and animal andplant, has a part in the harmony of allcreation. “Every creature has its ownpurpose. None is superfluous. The entirematerial universe speaks of God’s love.”

5- A universal communion- all people arelinked together. There is a kind of universalfamily.

6- The common destination of goods- “Theearth is essentially a shared inheritance, whose fruits are meant to benefit everyone.”

7- The gaze of Jesus encompasses all- “Thedestiny of all creatures is bound up withthe mystery of Christ.”

Some thoughts in reference to the encyclical:

Why does it matter? What impact will it have? Whyis he getting all this attention?

Papal encyclicals of the past have been academiccompositions.

This encyclical is very readable, in a journalisticstyle.

It is an invitational document. It does not claim tohave all the answers, but it does pose many of theimportant questions.

It calls for an action plan by the leaders of theworld’s nations. It calls for a peaceful revolutionand change for everyone.

It is a hopeful document trusting in God and theHoly Spirit.

(The Encyclical, about 200 pages in length isavailable on the Vatican website).www.vatican.va.com
