Dear Friends at St. Louise Parish, I read an article by Archbishop William Lori called “How Church Teaching Can Help Explain Why Black Lives Matter,” in the September 2020 edition of America Magazine (pp. 37, 40-41, or online).. The article provides clear principles drawn from our Catholic Social Teaching to help us reflect on “Black Lives Matter.” And even though Archbishop Lori does not make this point in the article, the principles he names can also be helpful in our prayerful preparation to vote. First, Archbishop Lori makes clear that he does not intend to address or endorse the political organization known as Black Lives Matter Global Network, nor any of the “ideological platforms or tactical strategies of ‘Black Lives Matter’ [that] are in direct contradiction to church teaching and should be rightfully rejected by faithful Catholics.” Rather, the question is “Is there truth reflected in these words [Black Lives Matter] . . . that indeed resonate with the Gospel values that flow from our faith?” He uses four Catholic Social Teaching principles to answer that question.

1. The Dignity of the Human Person, which flows from our belief

that every person is made in the image and likeness of God. The phrase “Black Lives Matter” reminds us that every Black person is made in God’s own image and likeness. Why do we single out Black lives? Because even the Church is guilty of participating in the sin of slavery in the past. Even though slavery has been outlawed in this land for a long time, it has taken too long to change hearts. “The words, ‘Black Lives Matter’ should prompt us to examine our own consciences with regard to racism and spur us on to advocate for racial justice.”. Archbishop Lori points out that this is part of our “’pro-life” stance as Church. “Because Black Lives Matter, then each of us must do our part to create conditions in which every Black person has the opportunity to be born, to grow to maturity, to live in community and to flourish.”

2. The Common Good, which is “the sum total of social conditions

which allow people, either as groups or individuals, to reach their fulfillment more fully and more easily” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, No. 1906). . . . Archbishop Lori continues, “It is for this reason also that Black Lives Matter. Some object that in affirming the importance of Black lives, we are implying that other lives do not matter. Quite the contrary. By finally rejecting a persistent and sinful attitude that places less value on Black lives than on other lives, we are in fact serving the common good. Affirming the dignity of Black lives diminishes no one else’s dignity. . . . The ascendancy of Black lives is not a zero sum gain for everyone else. Rather, it is a source of strength.”

Fr. Gary’s article continues on page 3...

Queridos Amigos de la Parroquia de Sta. Luisa:

...Fr. Gary’s article continued 3. Subsidiarity, that is “insofar as it is possible and appro-

priate, problems are to be addressed and initiatives for the good are to be undertaken at the most local level.” Government, churches and other institutions can help; however local groups and organizations should be em-powered to create the conditions for human flourishing. “It should matter to us that far too many of these predomi-nantly Black neighborhoods are deteriorating and ridden with violence and drug use.” While government action is essential, “the residents of these neighborhoods are the most important agents of all.”

4. And finally, Solidarity, which means “ . . . that those who

differ from us—by race, language or culture—are in fact our brothers and sisters. We are bound together by a common humanity and by equal dignity.”

We can use these four foundational principles of Catholic social teaching to reflect on Black Lives Matter and any of the other issues that come up we prepare to vote. Be-sides the social unrest that has been on display these past months over racial tensions, we could think of how to deal with the economic stress due to the coronavirus, abortion, immigration issues, housing, etc. The principles do not tell us how to vote, but rather how to think, reflect and pray as we prepare ourselves to vote. Sincerely in Christ, Fr. Gary Zender

We are calling the program "Family Faith Formation.” On the First Sunday of the month, we'll host a gathering after the 9AM Mass to celebrate holidays, Saints’ Feast Days and special lessons. For the next three weeks of the month, we will send prayers, family activities and Scripture readings and Saints’ stories via email on Friday afternoon. There is no cost for the program but registration is required, and we ask that you sign up for the 9AM Mass on our parish website. Registration is on the parish website: www.stlouise.org

Sacramental Preparation Children who wish to prepare for the Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Eucharist must be at least 7 years of age and registered in our school or our Family Faith Formation program. St. Louise School News

St. Louise School Has Opened PreK for In-Person Schooling We are excited to announce that our Pre-Kindergarten program for 4-year-olds has opened up this month for in-person schooling. We have limited spots remaining before we fill up our Pre-K roster, so if you are interested in having your preschooler come to St. Louise daily for our morning session (8:15-11:45AM) or our extended day session (8:15-3PM), please call the School Office at 425-746-4220 or email school

secretary, Tracy Brown, at [email protected].

Also, we are still accepting applications and securing admissions for new students in selected grade levels in K-8. (Some grade levels have waiting lists.) Although we began the school year two weeks ago with online learning, we expect to soon reopen for in-person schooling. In the meantime, the online-learning program we have running this Fall at St. Louise for K-8 students is robust and engaging. We would love to welcome new families to receive the benefits of a Catholic school education! Giving your child a Catholic school education is a fundamental way to assure he/she will receive a solid foundation not just in academics, but in morals and faith formation. Graduates of St. Louise Parish School leave us with a strong foundation and go on to do extremely well in high school, in college, and in life. More information on our outstanding parish school may be found at stlouiseschool.org.

Stewardship • La Corresponsabilidad

Called to Serve as Christ As of June 4, we had heard from 616 families and for those that were able to make a finan-cial commitment, they raised a total of $1.6 million. We have reached 71% of our $2.3 million goal! We are so grateful for the gen-erous support and sacrifices many families

have made to be part of this important campaign for our priests, women religious and our faith community – thank you! Overall, for the entire Archdiocese of Seattle, the total amount raised for the campaign so far is $53 million by 17,540 house-holds. The total campaign goal is $100 million. This Fall 71 parishes are lined up for the final and largest wave of the cam-paign. Just a reminder that whatever is our parish total amount paid, St. Louise gets 15% as our parish share, which will go towards our Building Fund. When we reach our goal, that’s a potential of $351K that will help seed our next building pro-ject. If you haven’t had the chance to respond, please visit www.stlouise.org/calledtoserve to learn more about the campaign and to submit your commitment. Thank you.

Annual Catholic Appeal

We are most grateful to everyone who has had the chance to respond and raise a total of $129,000 so far — that’s 40% of our $295,000 Annual Catholic Appeal goal – thank you! Out of our 2,000-plus households, we’ve heard from 256 fami-lies. This is great! If each of the remaining 1,700-plus families made a one-time gift of $100, we would meet and exceed our goal. However, not everyone might be able to make a pledge, so if you’re able to, kindly consider increasing your gift. Re-member, equal sacrifice, not equal gifts. Every amount makes a difference. Please consider making a pledge online by visit-ing our website at www.stlouise.org and clicking on the Annual Catholic Appeal button. Thank you for your generous re-sponse.
