Sales Management Sales Management CommentsComments

The inspirations for beginning National Trust started in the last few years by attending the Canadian Red Round Up. The ambience, energy and uplifting conversations found at the Red Round Up are nearly unprecedented anywhere. Not to mention being capped off by the opening letter in their catalog so passionately penned by Bryan MacKenzie, drove us to the creation of National Trust.

Certainly other factors came into play for the being of National Trust. Firstly, we’re sales managers, it’s what we do. Now, our schedule is very full, but this breed of cattle has been very good to us and the only way we can give back is to turn the focus and spotlight towards Simmental in every way possible. We are very dedicated to promote the breed’s success with ours and yours intertwined. Another reason for National Trust existing is the sheer coincidence that the second building was available the day after Red Round Up. Timing and location are integral rules of business for inevitable success.

We are also very proud to say we started National Trust during this year long 40th celebration of Simmental in Canada and Transcon’s 40th Anniversary. And if any of you have been curious as to how old I am, I turned 40 in February. So in another 10 or 20 years when we start celebrating milestone anniversaries for National Trust, we will always remember it began at Simmental’s 40th.

As an added bonus of exposure to National Trust consignors, interested parties from great distances who are not able to attend will be able to view the sale through the WLEX on-line system. You may also bid via WLEX, however we do ask that you contact a Transcon team member to evaluate potentials prior to bidding. We would still encourage you to be at the sale early to ensure your seat.

In my twelve years with Transcon I have never constructed a sale with such an overwhelming response level, not necessarily specifi c to consignments, but positive encouragement to build it FOR THE BETTERMENT OF THE BREED. With less than 50 lots, obviously our selections have been critical yet allowing many different breeders to be involved. The October timing we found allowed different breeders to participate that had other obligations that restricted their entries to other later sales and conversely allowed some of the annual bigger strings to “break up” somewhat and have features at more than one event. Honestly, because of National Trust’s design, more “front-enders” were made available than ever before. The quality of character of the Simmental breeder again shines a level above by encouraging our attempts and abilities to perform this on behalf of this breed. The initial ad for this sale read, “Check your prejudices at the door”, Fullblood, Red or Black, we’re all in this as one.

IPU 68R was the high selling bull at $30,000 in Barry LaBatte’s ‘06 sale. He is out of a proven cow that has numerous high sellers to her credit besides 68R. He is homozygous polled, a non spotter and non diluter. He was purchased to use on our fullblood cows. He has surpassed my expectations. All his calves are solid red except for some that have a blazed face or a little white on their belly. He is an easy calving bull with the heaviest at 108 lbs thus far. His calves have good growth, are aggressive at birth and are quiet and friendly around people, like their dad. He is very quiet and easy to handle. The reason he is for sale is that we will have his daughters calving this winter so it is time for him to fi nd a new home while he us still young enough to benefi t the new owner. He also comes with about 1000 straws of semen of which 500 are U.S. qualifi ed. His semen sold last year at Red and Black for $110 a straw. It isn’t every day a proven bull of this quality and in the prime of his life and with a large semen bank comes up for sale. If you are thinking about a herd bull, why wait!

Timberquest is our main herd bull that we have decided to sell only because we have too many daughters in our herd. We have always used walking herd bulls and with only 50 breeding females we need to change our herd bull every few years. Timberquest makes all his calves red, polled, deep ribbed and moderate framed with a few blazed faces. We have had many comments on how uniform he stamps his calves. Here is a proven mature bull that could be your next herdsire.

SEMENSEMENPACKAGESPACKAGES

Here is the only Neumann bull calf we’ve kept. He’s off a Metro cow that we think very highly of. Edi-tion has done it for us! His calves come with his stamp on them, dark red with good pigment. Edition is everything we could hope for and MORE! This year he bred 26 cows and stuck them all on their fi rst heat. You won’t be disappointed with the calves off him. The 2U Teardrop heifer is an Edition daughter that we were planning on keeping; that was until Jay saw her! She’s here today for sale (Lot 31) to show you what Edition calves can really do! Just look at Teardrop, what great offspring! We are selling semen packages on sale day. The packages can be split between a max of two farms. Packages are pre-priced at $2500 for 30 straws. This will be the ONLY semen for sale on Edition. So don’t miss out on sale day. This is your only opportunity!

What can we say about Crackerjack -- WOW. The people who have used Crackerjack semen could say it best. We have used Crackerjack in herd for three breeding seasons now. We are very pleased with his calves - so pleased that we used him on 40% of our cowherd this past breeding season. After having the pleasure of using him before anyone else, we have sold yearling bulls this past spring and bred the females in-herd for ourselves. We have just weaned another exceptional set of calves. Calving ease, growth, exceptional foot and bone mass, and not to mention pigmentation, are just some of the great attributes of Crackerjack.

Princess Elan was the best investment I’ve made since starting in the Simmental business several years ago (about 20 some). Having Smithbilt Molson as your sire and the great Elan cow as your mommy, there is not much more that needs to be said. Princess Elan and her calf are only being made available for the start of this great sale and for one lucky buyer to pick up a top donor cow that has never been fl ushed. Take a good look at her Anchor “T” Horizon heifer and that would explain it all. This is a pair that was very hard to part with and will truly be missed here at home. Ask Rick and Sandra what they think of the Molson X Elan cross. A truly must-own cow family.

It is very exciting to be part of this new venture, but what is exciting is to have this heifer in town. Dark red, lots of hair, big spring of rib. She comes from a great cross of our cow making bulls. Red Beacon daughters have so much style, and always bring in big calves in fall. Copper daughters have perfect feet and udders and are very easy keeping. Now what is really exciting is what she brings inside her. Service to IPU 62S, a dark red, big ribbed, big butted bull that calves like a dream. After the fi rst season with no assists, all polled and fast growth he got to service the whole heifer pen. We feel that his calves are going be very easy to market.

This is the pick of our Fullblood heifers. Her sire (pictured here) was purchased from Darrell Maronda at the Fest Sale in 2004. Personality’s dam was a high seller at the Bighorn-Parkland sale in 2003. She is a red faced cow from the Ebbeson breeding program. Her dam came from Joe Hanson’s dispersal eight years ago. This is only the second heifer to be sold from this dam. Two others are in the herd and the other was sold to Mike Burrington, a long-time Fleckvieh enthusiast. This heifer is bred to Exodus to guarantee a polled calf. If you get a bull calf he could pay back the whole deal in one year. A heifer calf could be one you’ll keep in the picture pasture at home.

For this, the very fi rst National Trust sale, Jay has selected a couple of our very best! 831U is a daughter of our foundation red cow from Yellow Rose, BGF 22K, and 719T is a grand-daughter, whose dam is undoubtedly one of our top young cows. 22K’s fi rst daughter, CMS 03M, happens to be the dam of our main herdsire for the past 3 years, ICON; who is now at Rendezvous Farms in Manitoba. We’re proud to showcase this cow family at the National Trust.

These two females could lead donor programs in a lot of herds. Tequila 719T is a high volumed female who is set-ting up a perfect udder, has style to burn and will look a lot like her fabulous mother as she ages. She is sired by Red Label whose daughters are going to be a major infl uence in Simmental cattle for years to come and she is bred early to Top Gun whose dam is one of the very best at TNT. He is also the sire of Ugly Betty.

Betty herself already has quite a reputation as she won the Champion Heifer Calf banner at Olds Fair where she and her 3 stallmates (all sired by Top Gun) won both bull cham-pion and reserve, and female champion interbreed jackpot awards. The week before at Strathmore Heritage Days, they walked away with both the bull and female jackpots and received calf Champion and Reserve banners in the open show. They created a defi nite “buzz in the barns” and many questions as to where they would be selling - well Betty sells at the National Trust today!! We are excited about this new event and look forward to sale day. Betty is entered in Edmonton and Regina and we would be happy and proud to show her for her new owner this fall.

T-Bone gave us a tremendous set of heifers this year. Choosing for the inaugural National Trust Sale was tough, so we opened the gate and gave Jay the choice. He couldn’t come up with the best one so we are offering two heifers. These two heifers, developed naturally without supplement, are what we feel represent the quality and depth of the program here at Tymarc. Have a close look as we won’t be parting with many T-Bone daughters.

Open. When we heard about the National Trust Sale we were quite excited and thought this might be a place to compare some of our cattle to some of the most elite cattle gathered in one place. So we decided to consign a fullblood, a red factor and a black. These three heifer calves were selected out of 140 heifers. We tried to select heifers that would make consistent producing mother cows. Klasse 849U was an easy selection for the fullblood heifer. She has been a standout from birth with her disposition, extra width over the top and soundness of structure and is from a front pasture, Rusty, momma cow. 27M was the lead off heifer at the Fleck Select 2004. We use Harrach for his outcross pedigree and extra volume and the Rusty daughters make excellent mother cows. Klasse is the kind that will raise those $8,000 bulls year after year.

Open.Teardrop is a polled, Fleckvieh heifer that stood out in the pastures all summer. Teardrop is dark, dark red with a little blaze on her face. There was no way we were selling this heifer. That is until Jay wanted to sell semen packages on her dad, 24S Edition. We thought we would sell her so you could see what Edition throws for calves! It’s going to be hard to part with Teardrop because she has such a great disposition on her. At the ’06 Select sale in Red Deer, Barry LaBatte bought a ¾ sister to Teardrop. That tells you what her mom does on her heifers because Barry has one of the best herds in Canada! Teardrop developed little scurs this summer, so we had them cosmetically removed by a vet. But don’t let that stop you; she is one of the BEST polled heifers I’ve seen. This is Edition’s fi rst heifer offered for sale and what a great one she is!!

21U is a heifer calf that can fi ll any role you need her to fi ll, be it a producing brood cow or a junior show heifer. She is a moderate framed , easy fl eshing, functional female with a proven pedigree backing her up. Her dam and granddam both had great successes in the show ring, are now making big impacts on our program as donors, and her 3/4 sister was Champion Female at the 2007 Canadian Western Agribition. This soft made Red Label heifer is the only daughter of RF I’m a Hussy Too that we have released and with both her sire and granddam being homo polled she has a very high probability of being homo polled herself.

Having many daughters and sisters in herd we opted to allow for you to have your pick of our two favorites from the 2008 heifer pen. They are both sired by our herd bull, Bar 15 Muscleman 26P. His offspring just keep getting better and better each year. C-K Uniqua 19U is out of C-K Lulu 2L, a cow many of you know from her show days along side her dam C-K Jubilee 2J. C-K Uptown Girl 9U is a granddaughter to Lulu. We are very proud of both heifers on offer and both would fi t anyone’s herd. These carbon copy females are long, deep, thick and have a great disposition. They are ready to show or just walk your pastures. Both are entered to be shown at Farm Fair 2008 in November if you would like to take your purchase or we can show on your behalf. See you sale day and happy harvest!

As a two year old, a Camille weaned off the heaviest bull calf for Progressive Simmentals at Chilliwack, BC at 1036 lbs. A Camille son also was our high selling bull at Top Guns ‘08. Double polled, 100% Full Fleckvieh, Dark Red, Goggle Eyed, Deep, Thick and an amazing disposition. Sounds too good to be true; well we are proud to offer Parview’s Miss Polly to the industry. This is one decision I really struggled with, as we are in a re-building phase, and I would have loved to have kept her for our polled full fl eck program. Her pedigree is an outcross to most these days as Polled Neuman progeny is very limited and her dam’s side has names like Rogant, Baltimore and King Arthur. Her dam is the lead donor cow for the JB-WELLS Polled Program so step up and let Miss Polly become your next lead donor cow. The main complaint with polled cattle has been the lack of performance; this heifer is every bit as good, if not better, than any horned heifer. Take a look at her overall length, depth, spring of rib and length of hip. I feel this heifer will truly speak for herself so plan on being in Red Deer or feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

When Jay asked us if we were interested in coming to the sale we were thrilled, but when he picked 26U it made us think twice. Since she was born, 26U has been a standout and it was easy to see how good of cow she would be for us. Being solid dark red, deep, thick and just the good, stout, easy doing type. Her mother is a very good, straight red cow. She is probably the smallest cow we have but has brought in one of our bigger calves. We think highly of this heifer and would love to keep her home, but you have got to sell the good ones. She will be a valuable asset to any herd and we will be proud to see her producing for you.

Here she is! The fi rst daughter of the $50,000 Maestro, the highest selling son of Make em Polled, to hit a sale ring! This year, we have selected a very special group of polled 100% Fleckvieh heifer calves to highlight our fall sale offering. Ulrika, the eldest of these chosen few, is certainly a female that we are proud to showcase at this inaugural National Trust event. Her picture truly says it all. Ulrika has been a stand-out from birth and as expected, continues to develop with great promise; a testament to her highly respected cow family, one in which Rob places much confi dence from which he is building a foundation. Accordingly, both her dam, MRLN Gellis, and maternal sister, JB Kameo Lake 7K, are important contributors to our E.T. program. Flush Time!!! As Jay told me about the fi rst National Trust Sale, we decided that we wanted to do something that would help this sale be a great success. We went directly to our Donor Pen and found a very special Cow to offer a fl ush and her Exceptional Calf. 1015K has become a farm favorite, with a pedigree very deep with breed legends. Her dam 304Y is one of the most recognized cows in the black Simmental industry. With a cow family like hers, she was a cow that was a defi nitely headed to our donor pen. We have fl ushed her successfully and have averaged 8 embryos per fl ush. We are excited about her sons in the bull calf pen at home. Selling the Right to Flush KLC 1015K. Shologan Stock Farm will guarantee 5 viable embryos.

Shologan Stock FarmShologan Stock Farm

As we looked in the donor pen and found the 1015K cow we were star struck with her calf. 117U is sired and stamped by our Senior Herd Sire, Red Tanker. He has done a great job for our program, his daughters have great udders and lots of milk. I think that this may be one of the best calves we have ever raised. We have truly come to love the type and style that Tanker is stamping on his calves. Take a look at her sisters bred to or sired by Tanker at the Pathway 2 Profi t Sale in November, they will blow you away.

From great cow families come great cows, and we feel that we have hit a home run with this pair of females. If you want to add some proven genetics from a Red Simmental Donor or are looking for your next great heifer calf to breed her the way you want, take a look this opportunity which does not happen everyday. JB CDN JOVITA 7002JB CDN JOVITA 7002Welcome to the next generation at JB! Jovita is a smooth polled Puma daughter and a full sibling to the (Puma x Jewel) embryo lot. She is one of the very best females ever produced at JB Livestock and will be a cornerstone in our programme. Her sire has been an important building block in the development of our polled division and has sired high profi le progeny working in some of fi nest herds in North America.

Our “new” herd is comprised of the 2004 and 2005 born females intentionally kept at home at the time of the reduction sale. This includes several Klyber and Hero daughters and has been enhanced more recently by their progeny sired by Puma and Hennessy. Since the 2005 reduction sale, all females except one...thank you PHS, have been put back into the JB breeding programme. Combined with the established cow families we have developed over the past couple of decades, our young ladies are rising to the occasion and exceeding expectations. The herd has a fresh look backed by solid history... new pictures will be coming soon! Jewel is one of our top young females showing great promise...she hit it out of the park with Jovita, her fi rst at-bat. This brand new donor has a pedigree designed for success with Klyber, Doctor Duke and the great Anna cow family behind her. These eggs from Jewel will prove to be golden!

Bar L7 Ranch was searching for a dominant Red female that had thickness, volume, and style to be the foundation for our Red line. After an extensive search, the opportunity came by way of Ankony Land & Cattle, to purchase BBS MISS LEVI K76. This donor cow was bred to Red Ceasar and had an excellent track record of embryo fl ushing. Miss Levi K76 is the dam to Ankonian Ryan and produced 3 embryo progeny (Levi K76 X Red Ceasar) that sold at the Ankony sale in excess of $100,000. Miss Levi K76 is currently in our 2008 embryo fl ush program at Alta Embryo Group with matings to two greats, Red Ceasar and Red Label. Bar L7 Ranch is offering ONE FLUSH ONLY to your sire of choice to this tremendous donor cow. Ready to fl ush and must be fl ushed by December 2009.
