    Dear Friends

In our last issue, we looked into The 4/14 Window and the urgencyfor us to impact our children in signicant and denitive waysbefore the window of opportunity closes. This urgency to reachthe next generation was also impressed upon me strongly at theLausanne Congress in Cape Town, South Africa.

In this issue, we delve further into what it means to disciple ourchildren and bring them up in the ways of the Lord. A key pointis this: Having a Christian culture in your home does not make ita Christian home. It is a ne difference, but a very important one.Discipleship is much more than growing up being surrounded byChristian music or even Christian friends. It involves a relationaltransference of life and wisdom; an ongoing conversation betweenyou and your children. They follow you as you follow Christ.

Yes, it is an awesome responsibility to be the spiritual guardians of

our homes. What a high calling! It is not beyond you and I. God has graced you for such a high calling.

And the good news is, there is really no xed formula for building aChristian home. Like the Christian life, much of it is simply walkingdaily in the power of the Holy Spirit, praying for wisdom, andstepping out in faith and in obedience to His voice.

Friends, as you take stock of the year that has passed and standat the threshold of a brand new year, I encourage you to embracethe high calling to shape the lives of your children. Even if you are

not a parent, God has entrusted to you the lives of the childrenyou inuence as a teacher or a minister of God. Embrace the call, and you will experience new enablement -- to walk in a greaterdimension of your calling in the new year.

Now may this season of Christmas usher the unmistakable warmthof Christ into your home, and may your family draw closer to Him

and to one another than ever before.Blessed Christmas from our home to yours!

Every Christian parent will readily afrm that theirchildren are being raised in a Christian home.Probe a little deeper, though, and youll nd thatwhat they really mean is that their children arebeing raised in a Christian culture. Let me statewhat should be obvious, butisnt; Christian activities andinterests do not make a homeChristian .

Let me be more specic; aChristian home is neverdened by what the childrenare doingit is dened bywhat the parents are doing .Your child could study the Bibleevery day, listen only to Christian

tapes and music, watch only Christian videos, readevery missionary biography in the library, knowa zillion memory verses, and never miss SundaySchool or Bible Club, and yet still not live in aChristian home.

Your children cannot do enough to makeyour home a Christian home. Only you, their parents, can make your home aChristian home. A Christian home, inuncomplicated terms, is one in which theparents purposefully keep Jesus Christ atthe center of family life. You choose tobuild your house upon the rock of Christand His word (Matthew 7:24), and then tobring up your children in the training andinstruction of the Lord (Ephesians 6:4).

    A Christian home,

    in uncomplicated

    terms, is one in

    which the parents

    purposefully keep

    Jesus Christ at the

    center of family life.

As a parent, you endeavour tobring your children up in theways of God. But what does thatreally mean? Is there more to itthan attending Sunday Schooland and growing up surroundedby Christian music and friends?

HOME NURTURE: Shepherding your childs spirit to long for God.

The place to start: Creating a spiritually nurturingenvironment that creates a longing in your childrenfor God. You create a Christ-centered atmosphereand environment in your home when you begin tointegrate Christ and Scripture into every area of yourfamily life. In a sense, home nurture is enrichingthe spiritual air that your children will breathein your home . It includes developing your childscharacter, as well as being sure your own spiritualwell is lled up. It happens through the way yourelate to your children, the things you do in yourhome, and the way you bring the life-giving word ofGod into your home life.

Remember the parable of the Sower? The Sowersseed, which is the word of God, fell fruitlessly onmany kinds of ground. But when it fell on goodsoil, it bore fruit. The good soil is those who havean honest and good heart (Luke 8:15). You aretraining your childrens character in order to creategood soil for the seeds of Gods truth so that, whenGod sows, they can take root and grow in your childsheart. It is our role to train our children in the waysand words of godliness; to keep them walking onthe path of righteousness until God gets hold of theirhearts and regenerates them, changing them by HisHoly Spirit. When He does, they will keep walking inHis path because they are already familiar with thelifestyle and language of godly character.

So, we do not create their character; rather,we teach and model to them what character is .Our training is cultivation, preparing an honest andgood heart, so the seeds of Gods truth, when theyfall there, will take root and grow, producing Christ-like character. Though it is not often mentioned, prayer may be our most effective character buildingtool because discipleship is a spiritual process, not aprocedure, and God wants the glory.

HOME DISCIPLESHIP: Shaping your childs heart to live for God.

Home discipleship is strategically shaping yourchilds heart to live for Him each day. Discipleshipis inseparable from the word of God. Though hedoesnt use the term discipleship in Deuteronomy6, Moses describes the process of discipleship withina family. It starts with the parents, with the word

of God on their hearts: These words, which I amcommanding you today, shall be on your heart. You

shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when

you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up . (Deuteronomy 6:6-7)

The simple fact is that you cannot pass on to yourchildrens hearts what is not already on your ownheart. Home discipleship is the process of leading

your child to follow and serve Christ as Lord. It isone thing to know the language and lifestyleof Christianity, but it is quite another to knowChrist . Home discipleship is how you as a parentnot only instruct your children about Christ, butmodel the life of Christ for them, and lead theminto a relationship and daily walk with Him.

In light of New Testament teaching, we understandthat discipleship is the process through which oneperson inuences another person to become likeChrist. It is a spiritual relationship in which thestudent (your child) becomes like the teacher(you) . In the same way that Paul told others toimitate me as he modeled Christ, you are givingyour child an example to follow as you bring themup in the training and instruction of the Lord.

Just as it was with Moses, the word of God isthe textbook for that relationship and foreverything that is of the Lord. The writer ofHebrews reminds us that the word of God is livingand active, that it is not just words on a page, or

instructions in an owners manual. It pierces yourchilds life physically and spiritually. More thanthat, though, it is able to judge the thoughtsand intentions of the heart. Without the wordof God intersecting every area of your lifeat home and your relationship with yourchildren, you cannot really say that you arediscipling your children .

There are at least three ways you need tobe sure the living and active word of God isdening discipleship in your home.

Bible Devotions: It is certainly good if youare committed to a family devotional time.God wants you to set aside time for him everyday to read his word, talk and pray. You needthat input to be a living representative ofGods life to your children, and your children

need it to be fed spiritually so they can growinto a strong relationship with God. A familydevotional time is great, but even better is afamily devotional life.

If the only real exposure to Gods truth yourchild receives during the day is the few minutesyou spend in a devotional time as a family, then there is very little discipleship going on. InGods design, if you are devoted to Him, thenall time is devotional time. And, as a parent, you are called by God to infect your childrenwith that devotion. That is what He meantin Deuteronomy 6:6-7 His word is rst onyour heart, and then passed on to yourchildrens hearts. Devotion is not just atime, its a life .

Bible Study: Most parents start off with theright desire for Bible study (I want my childrento know Gods word), but they inadvertentlyset the wrong goal (I need to be sure mychildren know all about the Bible). While Bible

knowledge is a good thing, the primary purposeof Bible study for your children is not simplyto pour knowledge about the Bible into theirbrains. Spiritual maturity is not measuredby how much a person knows about theBible, but by how well one lives out whathe knows .

Gods truth is found primarily in ideas that

change lives, such as the law of love, not inbare facts divorced from the ideas that givethem meaning. That is why Jesus spoke sooften in parables; he wanted his hearers to getthe idea. Your real purpose in teachingyour children to study the Bible is to showthem that they can acquire wisdom andunderstanding from Gods word for livinga godly life . They need to know that God canspeak to them through the words of Scripture.

They need to see that Gods truth is consistent, reliable, trustworthy, effective, and makes sense.

Because our goal is to instill in our children a heart-deep and lasting love for the word of God, we avoidmaterials that would turn the living and activeBible into a spirit-deadening workbook exercise oracademic assignment. We look for ways to naturallyintegrate Gods word into every part of our dailylives; family devotions, Bible reading and study, Biblememory, discussions about life and current events, disciplinary instruction, prayers, Scripture songs, history studies, doctrinal discussions, and so on.

Just as we try to create a devotionallifestyle, we also createa biblical lifestyle inwhich the Bible is centralto everything we do,everyone we meet, and every decision wemake. We want ourchildren see a Bible

that intersects and brings meaning to everyfacet of their young lives.

Biblical Worldview: Finally, we help ourchildren take the step of integrating the Bibletruths that they are hearing, learning andseeing into real life; their life. If we give thema love for Gods word, but fail to showthem that it makes sense to their lives, all

we have done is given them a good Bibleeducation . Until it is living and active inthem, the goal of discipleship is not complete.

We help them to see how Gods word, andthose who lived it, has changed history for thebetter. We want them to know and understandthe great ideas of life from the Bible thathave given mankind freedom and dignity. Wewant them to know the lives of great men and

women who have followed the Word. We wantthem to see the logic and reasonableness of aChristian worldview.

At the end of the day, there is no biblicalformula for building a Christian home. It isreally just a relational process of loving God andloving your children. In fact, like the Christian life, much of the process of building a Christian home

is simply a matter of walking daily in the power ofthe Holy Spirit, praying for wisdom, and steppingout in faith. That is what will dene your home as

a Christian home that you, the parents, withGods help, are nurturing and discipling your

    children for Christ.

Advent marks the start of the Christmas season. The wordadvent, from Latin, means "the coming." It is a time ofspiritual reection as well as cheer and anticipation. Itbegins on the Sunday nearest November 30, and lasts fourSundays till Christmas. Here are some meaningful ways tocreate a family Christmas tradition:

Lighting candles in the Advent wreathAn Advent wreath is made from greens to symbolizecontinuous life and contains four candles -- three purpleand one rose. Often a fth candle (white) is added tothe center of the wreath for lighting on Christmas Eve,in celebration of the birth of Jesus. The candle-lighting isprogressive from week to week, preparing the way for thecoming of Jesus.

Create your own special family advent tradition by addingBible verses, carols, discussions questions or whatever yourfamily chooses. If your children are older, pick a leader forevery week. The leader can then take the lead in lightingthe candle. Often the lighting takes place before dinneror right after sunset, but there are no hard and fast rulesconcerning this.

    A Family Tradition:

    CelebratingAdvent with Kids

First Sunday of advent: HopeLight one purple candle to symbolise HopeSuggested reading: Isaiah 60:2-3

Second Sunday: PeaceLight two purple candles to symbolise

Hope and PeaceSuggested reading: Mark 1:4

Third Sunday: Joy Light two purple candles (Hope andPeace), and one rose to symbolise JoySuggested reading: Isaiah 35:10

Fourth Sunday: LoveLight all four candles Hope, Peace, Joyand LoveSuggested reading: Isaiah 9:6-7

Christmas EveAfter sunset, light all four candles andadd the fth white candle (symbolisingthe light of Christ)Suggested reading: Luke 1:68-79 andLuke 2:1-20

    What participants say

The conference, held on 9-11 September at Paya LebarMethodist Church, saw over 216 participants coming toget updated on contemporary issues, strategic areas and

hot topics concerning today's children and families.

The speakers included Bishop Robert Solomon, whoseplenary session address touched on "Challenges ofFamilies in a Post-Modern World".

The participants were enriched through the ve plenarysessions, four intensive seminars and six hands-on

National Children & Families Conferenceworkshops which touched ondiverse and relevant topicssuch as Understanding Pre-

Teens, Kids in New Media,Ministering to Special NeedsChildren, and Journeyingwith Children in Grief. Theconference was co-organisedby Scripture Union and theTRAC (Trinity Annual Conference) Board of Children'sMinistry, from The Methodist Church in Singapore.

"Thanks for organising this enlightening conference ; forreminding and challenging us regarding the importance ofchildren and families in the Kingdom of God."

"The plenary sessions helped me understand that childrenhave a 'bent' toward God which we must encourage beforethey begin to drift away from it. I also understood the post-modern trends in children and families, and the importanceof being close to God so that our inuence will spill overand touch them. It was all right-on and very helpful! " "I learnt that children are in training, not in waiting .They are ready to be agents of transformation!" It was a good reminder that children need us in their lives,to come alongside them in the problems and to know theirunique gifts. We need to lay good groundwork so thatthey are well-prepared for their teen years.

"I learnt that post-modern forces are real and strong, butGod's love and grace is all powerful ."

The workshop speakers were very inspiring andanointed! I learnt that parents must be intentional intraining their children and building a relationship of loveand trust with them.

Excellent in content . Good resources. The workshopspeakers personal example was outstanding. I feel reallyencouraged and equipped!

"I learnt the importance of using the language of intimacy in the home, and not just of information and manipulation." Lots of great ideas! I gained good insight into thethoughts and feelings of pre-teens.

Great stuff! Much to think about. Well done it was agood conference throughout!

"I was impacted by how children can change the world;whatever their age, God can use them mightily. I'm so gladI am in the right ministry!

Object Lesson: MirrorTeaching Aids : You will need a white piece of

soap and a mirror or a few mirrors to pass around. You have to prepare and test this object lesson before the class. Wet the piece of soap and use it to write on the mirror these

words: Jesus our Hope. When it dries, blow on the mirror and the words will be

revealed. Write it on a few mirrors before class. Show the mirror or mirrors to the children. God has planned a great future for all of us. God has a hope

for His people. What is this hope? Get some volunteers to come up and blow on the mirrors.

Jesus our Hope is revealed. God has planned it and announced it beforehand so that we

will receive this hope in our lives.

Game: Freeze game Choose a volunteer to be the Announcer. The Announcer will have his or her back towards the children. At your signal, children begin walking around the room at

random. When the Announcer shouts, Hear Ye, Hear Ye!, the children

must freeze where they are, and obey the command, e.g.children wearing blue must place their hands on their head.

Children will start walking around again until the next freeze Call out a new action for each freeze. E.g. those whose names

start with the letter A will hop on the spot Invite a new Announcer to call out again with his/her back

turned towards the children. Link: We cannot predict the next thing that happens.

However, everything the Bible predicts will eventually happen.

THE CreativeOne of the key ways in which Scripture Union serves churches is by equipping

Here, we share some creative ideas that will enable you to

iilGame: Surprise BalloonTeaching Aids : You will need 2 chairs, a bed

sheet, 1 red balloon and 6 other balloons. Place 2 chairs in the middle of the

playing area and hang a bed sheetbetween the chairs.

Inate 2 sets of 3 balloons (exceptred) for each team.

Divide the children into two teamsand position their players onopposite sides of the sheet.

The players sit and/or kneel, but theymust not stand, on the oor and spacingthemselves evenly around the playing area.

Toss a coin to see which team will have theRED SURPRISE BALLOON to start the game.

Set a time, e.g. 1 minute per round. At the word GO, the children on each

side will hit their balloons together withthe RED Surprise Balloon across to theother side.

At the end of the game, the team withoutthe SURPRISE BALLOON wins the game.

Link: in this game you have to wait for theballoon to come to your side. In todayslesson we will learn how the Israelites werewaiting for the coming of the Messiah.

The Bible contains many predictions calledprophecies.

The Bible predicted that God would send aSaviour into this world. Jesus was that Saviour.

The birth and life of Jesus Christ wereannounced long before he was born.

In fact, many prophets in the Old Testamentgave many details about Him hundreds of yearsbefore his birth

There were over 300 prophecies about him, sowe would expect the Israelites to recognise Jesuswhen He came. But they did not.

Lets nd out what some of the prophecies are.

Summarise: Isaiah predicted about the coming of the Messiah,

who would be born of a virgin and teach in Galilee.(Isaiah 9:6-7)

Bethlehem was a very small town and of littleimportance, yet God spoke through the prophetMicah that it would be the birthplace of the Messiah.Jesus was born in Bethlehem. (Matthew 2:1-2).

Malachi spoke of a messenger like Elijah (Malachi4:4-5) and it was fullled in John the Baptist (Matthew1:12-14).

Jeremiah (Jeremiah 23:5-6) predicted that the Messiahwould be a descendant of David (Matthew 21:9-11).

Isaiah also predicted that the Messiah would sufferand die for his people (Isaiah 53).

Application: Why did God give usthese prophecies? God wants us to know His plans but He does

not give them to us all at once. God gives them to us one at a time so that we

can think about it and understand a little moreeach time.

God told the people that Jesus was coming sothat they could be on the lookout for him.

God sent Jesus to save us from our sins. Why did He want to do that? Because He

loves us. John 3:16 says, For God so loved theworld, that he gave his only begotten Son, thatwhosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Do you know Jesus as your Saviour and God? Do you know what your life will turn out

to be? We cant know everything but Godhas a plan. Trust Him for His plan. He isyour Hope for the future.
