Time is running out for sharks

Seeing a shark is probably most people’s biggest nightmare when they get in the sea. And it’s true that some kinds of sharks can be dangerous to humans. But the truth is that most sharks are not dangerous.Sharks have been on the Earth for four hundred million years. They’re even older than the dinosaurs and far older than us. Most people know a few kinds of shark; the great white shark is the most well known, but many people also know the hammerhead, blue and tiger shark. There are 470 different types of sharks in our seas. The smallest, the dwarf lantern shark, is no longer than 20 cm. The largest fish in the sea is the enormous whale shark. It can reach up to 12 m in length. Of these 470 types of sharks, around 100 are fighting for their survival!Sharks are incredibly efficient at surviving in the sea. They are amazing hunters. They can smell, hear and see very well. They can find other fish from a great distance and they can even see when it’s dark. They have no other fish to fear except sometimes other sharks. So why are they in danger? The sad answer is because of human activity. Worldwide, sharks kill about seven people each year. But around 100 million sharks are killed by humans each year! We are killing sharks faster than ever before. People eat their meat and make soup out of their fins*. The shark fins soup industry kills millions of sharks each year. Often the fin is cut from the shark and the rest of the body is thrown back into the sea. We are also killing sharks by polluting our seas with plastic. The plastic destroys the environment the sharks need to survive.
