BY JUSTIN BROMAN Ocean Rescue Manager O n September 21st we had our 4th Annual Miami-Dade Coastal Clean-Up. This is an international event, held all over our coastlines, parks and other areas on this day. The United States Coast Guard and the Coast Guard Auxiliary not only coordinated the event for Sunny Isles Beach, but also were part of the cleaning efforts. On September 21, the volunteers separated in groups with trash grabbers and bags in hand, picking up all different types of debris and garbage. The cleanup was on a perfect day with amazing weather which made it great for this event. The Sunny Isles Beach Ocean Rescue (SIBOR) Division helped out by pro- viding water, supplies and a lifeguard on standby to help with any needs. She was widowed two months agowhen her husband was killed in an autoaccident.

She doesn’t know how to be a widow. It had been a second marriage

that had lasted for five years. He had two young daughtersand she had been excited aboutputting together a combinedfamily. It didn’t work out as shehoped.

The daughters didn’t likesharing their father. Theyevoked situations that forcedhim to make decisions that didn’t needher advice. Ones that put her on the out-side of the discussions and did it everytime they could. When in front of theirfather they were sweet, otherwise theypretty much ignored her.

They visited the mother-in-law at leastonce a month and that was a mess sincethe mother-in-law was convinced that shecaused the first marriage to fail even

though she hadn’t even met the first wifeuntil they were divorced a few yearsbefore.

He had two married sisters that made itclear that their brother had mar-ried beneath him. After all,Marriage #1 had a masters, while #2 only graduated fromschool with a simple degree.

When he died in the crash ittook the daughters two weeksto move out and move in withtheir mother. She visited hermother-in-law who made it

plain that she had lost a son of 38 and shehad only had the husband for five yearsand to please leave her alone. The sistersrefused to talk to her stating throughtheir husbands that they had just lost adear brother and would she please leavethem alone.

She has been widowed for two monthsand doesn’t feel that she is acting proper-ly.

es that night. Who knew that there was somuch hidden talent in our World Class City!

The stage was set, lights checked, and anabundance of performers were ready fortheir chance to take the stage. Long hours ofplanning, coordinating, and scheduling allpaid off as the first performer took the stage.

The performers ranged from just fiveyears old to sixty and older. The variety oftalent present in the show displayed just howmuch the event had grown from one year tothe next. Expanding from dancers, singers, and pianist, this year’s show also featured anoriginal poetry recital, flamenco dancing, modern dance, a five-piece band, originalartists, and even a traditional comedic musi-cal performance from Russia. With so muchgrowth in one year, we cannot wait to seewhat the City’s 3rd Annual Talent Show willhave in store for us next year.

A big thank you goes out to this year’sjudges: Pianist Ofelia Biancuzzo, ArtistBeatriz Alcantara and Miss Teen USA fromSIB, Tiffany Rivera. Professionalism andthoughtful choices of the judges keep ourSIB Talent Show to a higher standard thatwill inspire performers to return and partic-ipate year after year.

But don’t let familiarity lullyou into forgetting the message behind thecolor: There are important steps womencan take to help reduce their chances ofhaving breast cancer or to help find it early, when it’s easiest to treat.

Since 1990, more and more womenhave been surviving breast cancer, largelybecause of early detection through mam-mography and improvements in treatment. However, breast cancer is still the second-leading cause of cancer death in women, behind only lung cancer.

Mammograms can find breast cancersearlier, when the chances of survival arebetter. That’s why the American CancerSociety recommends yearly mammogramsand breast exams for women age 40 andolder. Mammograms aren’t perfect, though. They may miss some cancers, ormay detect things that aren’t cancer. That’swhy it’s also important to talk to your doc-tor if you notice any changes in your

breasts. In addition to getting a yearly mam-

mogram, there are other steps women cantake to help stay well and reduce theirbreast cancer risk:

• Eat a healthy diet to help controlweight. Being overweight or obese mayraise breast cancer risk.

•Get regular physical activity.Working out regularly helps keep yourweight in check, and exercise may helpcontrol inflammation and other factorsassociated with cancer risk. Adults shouldget at least 150 minutes of moderate-inten-sity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensityactivity each week (or a combination ofthese), preferably spread throughout theweek.

• Limit the amount of alcohol you drinkto no more than one drink per day. In stud-ies, alcohol has been clearly linked to anincreased risk of developing breast cancer.

This October, do more than “thinkpink.” For more information about how youcan take action, make noise, and help makethis breast cancer’s last century, call yourAmerican Cancer Society at 1-800-227-2345 anytime, day or night, or visitcancer.org/breast cancer.

BY COMMISSIONER JENNIFER LEVIN

Since the incorporationof Sunny Isles Beach in1997, the leaders of theCity have embarked on amission to create a uniquecommunity easily identifi-able by residents and visi-tors alike. As a newly-

elected Commissioner, I continued thequest of seeking approval from the UnitedStates Postal Service for a unique ZIP Codefor the City of Sunny Isles Beach.

The task of obtaining a ZIP Code for theCity was first initiated when I was nominat-ed to serve on the City Advisory Committeeby former Vice Mayor Lewis Thaler whoseidea it was to make the request. I had noidea what I would be doing once appointedto the CAC, but I immediately was directedby the former Chair of the City AdvisoryCommittee that my task would be to under-take this request. Even then, in January2012, the USPS was already having finan-cial difficulties, and they just continued toget worse over time. At the time of thiswriting, the Federal Government is on shut-down.

I waded through the USPS OperationsManual and other materials I had and couldfind that would enlighten me as to what theUSPS takes into consideration when con-sidering a “request for ZIP Code boundaryreview” rather than simply writing a letterstating that Sunny Isles Beach wanted anew ZIP Code because it is unique and dif-ferent from the other areas inside 33160. Iextolled its virtues: the Beach, geographiclocation, tourist destination, economic sta-tus and property values (as to uniqueness),the low crime rate (for the insurance costargument), its population and projectedgrowth rate (to justify the cost). I alwaysfelt that it was an up-hill battle because ofthe financial ramifications to the flounder-ing USPS as my research also led me to therequirements that the change had to makefinancial sense. I learned during the processthat we also had been denied in the past ontwo occasions, and I had found articles onthe Internet about other cities that had beenturned away. But, as they, say: If you don’task, then certainly you don’t get, and Iremained cautiously optimistic.

In a nutshell, my arguments seemed tofall on deaf ears with a reply that felt script-ed and was turned around too quickly giventhe procedure I was originally told wouldhave to be followed when considering the

request. The denial was based on the factthat the USPS was unable to identify anyoperational needs, substantial savings, orservice improvements that would justifytheir providing a unique ZIP Code forSunny Isles Beach. At a minimum, changesto schemes and transportation schedules, directory revisions, computer software, andmail forwarding for changing addresseswould be required and significant adminis-trative costs would be incurred. It was fur-ther explained that 5-digit ZIP Codes canonly be authorized if there is an operationalneed supporting the USPS’ mission of pro-viding the best universal service, when anexisting ZIP Code structure impedes qualityservice, and where there is an opportunity tosubstantially reduce its distribution anddelivery costs. The denial also went on toexplain in three paragraphs the “preferredlast line” concept as though I had no ideawhat it is although I had stated in therequest that it was inadequate. Naturally, however, above all else the USPS is a busi-ness, a separate entity not funded by our taxdollars, so all of the fiscal arguments makesense notwithstanding internal directives ofthe USPS which I was provided from theiroffice in Washington, D.C., or argumentsmade in the request for the change.

Finally, however, there was the ultimatetruth in black and white: “The USPS isexperiencing significant financial chal-lenges related to declining mail volumes, the lackluster economy and fluctuating fuelcosts.” Consequently, not all of the estab-lished rules apply any longer. In fact, sincethe time of the application, there has beentalk in Congress of the installation of postoffice box stations, like you might see in atownhouse project, so mail carriers nolonger have to stop at individual addressesand everyone within a certain area wouldpick up their mail at the same location.

As much as the attorney in me wants toappeal the decision, timing is everythingand now is simply not the time. With email, social media, financial difficulties, thespeed of technological development, anever-evolving global economy and neces-sary adaptations to all of the above, it maynever be. Who knows? The ZIP Code mayeventually become a thing of the past, maybe even the United States PostalService itself. For the time being, however, not having our own ZIP Code does notdetract from what Sunny Isles Beach hasbecome, is, or will be in the future—Florida’s Riviera, a unique community, andthen some.

BY ANNETTE WEISSMAN Principal NSE SIB K-8

The school year is offto a wonderful start withour teachers implement-ing a rigorous curriculumthroughout the day and anexpanded after schoolprogram of clubs and

enrichment activities. Let me share someof this excitement with you

This year, NSE Sunny Isles Beach K-8has partnered with the Florida JusticeTeaching Institute to help our Civics stu-dents better understand the justice systemand how it works. The ultimate goal of theJustice Teaching program is to pair a legalprofessional with every elementary, mid-dle, and high school in the state of Florida.Sunny Isles Beach Commissioner JenniferLevin, who is also an attorney, is volun-teering her time this year to the students atNSE SIB K-8 Her extensive knowledgeand experience is serving as a very valu-able resource for so many of our seventhgraders. While Miami Dade County PublicSchool teachers have the preparation andskills needed to “give their students theworld”, having an attorney in the class-room helps make learning more enrichingby bringing a deeper understanding of howour justice system works. The JusticeTeaching program aims to benefit students

by promoting an understanding ofFlorida’s justice system and our laws, developing critical thinking abilities andproblem solving skills, and demonstratingthe effective interaction of our courts with-in the constitutional structure. This partner-ship will surely do just that.

Another exciting event in the Civicsdepartment this year was the annualConstitution Day Essay Contest. TheMiddle School District winner was NourAbdrado, a 7th grade Civic’s student inMs. Carvajal’s Civics class. Nour’s essayon the first amendment won first place! She and her family attended the receptionat which she was awarded an iPad for herheartfelt essay.

Our expanded before and after schoolenrichment program includes a SECMEClub, a Computer Club, a chapter of theNational Junior Honor Society, a BuildersClub and a K-Kids Club in addition toFuture Educators Association and StudentGovernment, Strings and Art Clubs. Thereare also Science Fair Camps for middleand elementary students and open comput-er labs in the morning to provide studentswith access to computerized programs.Through these programs, our studentshave every opportunity to enrich theirskills and give back to the community. These clubs and their sponsoring teachersare expanding our students’ horizons anddeveloping our future leaders.

ODE TO COLUMBUS DAYMonday, October 14

Americans celebrated theDiscovery of the NewWorld by ChristopherColumbus. There are thosewho contend that the NorseVikings, Irish missionaries

or the ten lost tribes of Israel somehow dis-covered America before Columbus did; butthe fact is that Columbus alone got back tothe Old World and spread the word.

Columbus Day is an Italian-American tra-dition. A man named William Monneyfounded an organization called the Society ofSt. Tammany that had what is generallyregarded as the first American celebration ofColumbus Day back in 1792. The New Worldor America Christopher Columbus discovereddoes not bear his name, but rather is namedafter Americo Vespuccio. Vespuccio claimedto have been the first to reach the continentalmainland-in 1497 to be exact.

Vespuccio got the continent, and historyhas certainly made it up to ChristopherColumbus. And how many cities in the U.S.are named after Vespuccio? Columbus wasgifted with courage and with the patience tostick to the course he laid out for himself.

ALBERT EINSTEINThursday, October 17th this year will be 80

years since famous scientist and father ofnuclear power immigrated to America. AlbertEinstein was born in Germany and educatedin Europe but was known around the worldfor his work in theoretical physics. He wonthe Nobel Prize in 1921 for his explanation of

the photoelectric effect. He traveled the worldto speak about his findings, even appearing asa guest lecturer at Columbia University inNew York City for three weeks in April 1921.

By the early 1930s it was obvious that thetreatment of Jews in his native land wouldmake it impossible for Albert to continueworking in any official capacity at anyGerman university. He was listed as an enemyof the Nazi Party and targeted for death.Einstein wisely chose to leave Germany forBelgium, then England and finally the UnitedStates. He accepted a position at the Institutefor Advanced Study (Princeton, New Jersey)and applied for US Citizenship in 1935.

“GOBLINS AND BROOMSTICKS!”October 31st is Halloween- there are prob-

ably more superstitions about Halloween thanabout any other day of the year. Halloweenused to signal the end of the harvest and wasa time used by the ancient Celtic pagans totake stock of supplies for winter. They alsobelieved the dead could reach the living onthat day. And since they thought that the headwas the most powerful part of the body, theyused that part of vegetables to carve a face andfrighten off the scary things that they believedin. Jack O Lanterns were first carved from aturnip or rutabaga. They would place a skele-ton on their window sill to represent thedeparted and protect their home.

Halloween has changed greatly since ancienttimes. In today’s celebration most participate inHalloween as a fun day to party. In our imagi-nation on that festive day witches float aroundon their brooms probably needing an air trafficcontroller. Go with the kids at night for Trickor Treat; be sure to look through their“Goodies” before they eat the candy.

“Have a Safe Halloween everyone!”

ARTS BALLET THEATRE OF FLORIDAFirebird & Pentimento

Pentimento, created by choreographer Vicente Nebrada, includes excerpts from JohannSebastian Bach’s Four Suites for Orchestra. The ballet is a bold, abstract work that is

based on the art form of painting called pentimento. The artist changes his or her mind aboutthe composition of his painting during the process of painting, and then changes it. This ballet

applies the same approach to dance: the concept for the dances and costumes change throughout the performance. Using masks, flowing fabric and creative lighting to create

a mystical effect, the piece develops through layers of movement, color and light. Adding tomystical effects is original costuming by Cristina Gianinni.

On the same evening and back by popular demand, the Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida presentsFirebird, with Stravinsky’s brilliant score that tells the tale of a magical firebird who helps aheroic prince rescue a beautiful princess. With exuberant dancing, magical special effects,

fantastic costumes designed by Jorge Gallardo, and innovating special multimedia effects bywww.DigitalMediaDesigns.net this magnificent production will enthrall and enchant audiences.

Shows are October 12th and 13th at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts -Amaturo Theater; and October 19th & 20th at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center

In addition to these main productions, Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida will also make educationalappearances in various schools in both Broward and Miami-Dade counties, as they continue toexcite young children about the importance and enjoyment of the classical art of ballet in the

education outreach program.
