formed by the Sunny Isles Beach Orchestrawith several guest singers which was fol-lowed by Music Through the Ages withMeshelle and Company. Adults and childrenalike lined up to have their likeness handdrawn by a caricature artist, get their facepainted, and shoot hoops with our basketballcoaches. Strolling balloon artists, stilt walker,

jugglers and acrobats filled out the day but thebest attraction by far was the interactive waterfeature that will be there every day for theenjoyment of all park patrons.

On the bright and sunny Sunday afternoonof June 19, the City celebrated the 14thAnniversary with a family style barbecue forover 3,000 guests and the official cake cut-ting ceremony where the City Commissionliterally served their people from the officialcity cakes as Viva Classic Rock and Roll ledthe crowd in a rocking rendition of Happy

Anniversary. The tropical themed rides andgames were the perfect accoutrement to the4th Annual Sunny Isles Beach OffshoreChallenge powerboat race that attractedthousands of spectators to our beautifulstretch of fine sand beach where 34 boatsraced from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. And as a cur-tain falls at the end of a play, the cloudsrolled in to close another fantastic weekendof anniversary festivities.

And no sooner than it is over, we start ourplans for next year’s extravaganza of anniver-

sary events. By then all residents should havetheir official City Resident ID card which theywill need to partake in the festivities as a res-ident. If you don’t have yours, be sure to stopby the Visitor’s Center or Pelican CommunityPark with your identification and utility bill. The sooner you get yours, the better informedyou will be on all of the opportunities that areafforded to our residents. You never knowwhat you may be missing!

Amos and Barbara became acquaintedthrough their work.

He worked for the state’s attorney andBarbara was a tough criminal defenseattorney who always seemed to take onthe tough defense cases. Theysparred a few times in the court-room and got to respect eachother and the original approachto the law that each went by.

Wasn’t long before Amosoffered to take Barbara to lunchone day. They found that theyseemed to have much in commonas far as tastes and even hobbieswere concerned. They both played tennisand it didn’t take long for them to be bat-tling on the tennis court.

Things moved quite well and romancebloomed in Amos’ mind.

Took Barbara to dinner one night and asthe dinner progressed, it became clear thatthis was heading to an evening that theyhad wanted and had been looking forwardto. After dinner Amos suggested that per-

haps they could stop by his apartment andBarbara agreed.

At the apartment Amos took Barbara inhis arms and suddenly Barbara stiffenedand broke out of his arms. She was as con-fused as Amos as to why this happened.Barbara apologized saying that she didn’tunderstand her reaction but perhaps itwould be better if she went home.

Amos figured that it mighthave been too soon for Barbara, waited a few days and took herto lunch. During lunch Barbarakept staring at him as if to figuresomething out.

Once again they went oneevening to his apartment. AsAmos held her she suddenlybroke out of his arms and stared at

him, “I know now,” she said sadly “Amosyou feel and look vaguely like my stepfa-ther,” “He abused me when I was youngand I had blacked it out of my mind after hepassed away. I can’t even let you touch mebecause somehow it feels like my stepfather.”

Amos and Barbara see each other quiteoften... in the courtroom. He looks at herand she shrugs forlornly.

Year-round Sunny IslesBeach residents get to baskin the glory of “summer inthe city,” enjoying specialbenefits like these all thesnowbirds are missing outon...

LLeessss ttrraaffffiicc...means it takes less time toget to work – so you can spend more timesleeping, having a leisurely breakfast, reading the whole newspaper, perfectingyour hair style – and you might even scoreextra points for coming in early!

HHootttteerr wweeaatthheerr...means more bikinis atthe beach and more motivation for every-one to get in better shape! But have youever wondered why department stores arealready featuring sweaters when it’s 90degrees outside??

BBaarrggaaiinnss...mean area restaurants areoffering special summer menu specials soyou can eat a lot for less – totally sabotag-ing that bikini diet. But fortunately, manySunny Isles Beach condos and resorts havegyms and spas where you can burn off thatbagel with cream cheese or crème brulee!

PPeerrffeecctt ttaannss……Instead of going to work– work on your tan and fulfill some sum-mer time community service hours…Afterall, Sunny Isles Beach does have a reputa-tion to uphold for being home to those whoenjoy the best combination of lifestyle andluxury!

HHuurrrriiccaannee sseeaassoonn……means now’s thetime to stock up on plenty of bottled water– although many Sunny Isles Beach resi-dents prefer bottles of fine wine…essentialif you’re going to be dining by candlelightwhen there’s no power.

SSuummmmeerr ffuunn......means residents willenjoy 4th of July festivities celebratingpatriotism – and “condo dweller independ-ence” from mowing lawns, cleaning poolsand bringing up groceries.

PP rrooggrreessss....means the CityCommission will continue working onproactive initiatives thissummer…Wouldn’t it be great if they’dauthorize free suntan lotion and icecream for everyone, paid days off forbeach parties or barbecues - and ofcourse, a resolution declaring absolutelyno hurricanes come close to Sunny IslesBeach from now ‘til November!

Memory is the ability to retain andrecall things. It is stored in networksthroughout your brain. Your memory isyour identity, it defines who you are. It isyour history. Your memories make you dis-tinct and unique. No one wants to lose theability to remember things because no onewants to lose a part of themselves.

There is an emotional reaction whenyou forget something. You experience anx-iety, trepidation and insecurity. When youcannot remember something instantly youmight jump to the conclusion that yourmemory is not as sharp as you expect it tobe. People confuse those moments withdecline. People are afraid that they mightbe suffering from memory loss when it isnot true. Your memory is better than youthink it is.

Memory is about retrieval and retrievaltime which is the time it takes you to recov-

er something stored in your memory. Veryoften you might say you can’t remembersomething in the moment but that isbecause it is taking a little extra time torecover the the desired information. It isretrieval time not forgetfulness.

Even a computer has to have a memo-ry component to function in an optimummanner. The memory component refers tothe capacity of the computer. It has a RAM,random access memory which stores dataand it has ROM which is read only memo-ry and cannot be modified. To secure yourstored memory you can purchase an exter-nal drive that will back up everything andsave it.

You need an external drive in yourown life as well. It is a good idea to createan external component separate from your-self to safeguard your memories. It is pru-dent to write down on paper your own timeline of important events. It is also importantto be socially active as you age if possible. It helps to keep your mind sharp. Sociallyactive people experience less cognitivedecline than those who are inactive anduninvolved.

Recent reports of hackers infiltrating Sony’ssystems prompts me to wonder if big high-techcorporations such as Sony and Apple are sus-ceptible to hacks, then how hard could it be forinformation to be retrieved from our personalcomputers?

In a study of 100 popular websites used bytens of millions of people, it was found thatthree quarters directly leak private informationor users’ unique identifiers to third-party track-ing sites.

The study demonstrated how the leaking ofprivate information could permit trackingsites to link many pieces of information, including browsing histories and contents ofsearches on travel and health websites. It alsois important that consumers make every effortto protect their information when surfing thenet, and more importantly, when shoppingonline. What to do:

• When online shopping, look for an “s” afterthe “http” in the address of the Web page whereyou’re entering your credit card information.

• Look for third party seals of approval, such

as from the Better Business Bureau Online orTRUSTe’s Certified Privacy seal. Click on theseals to make sure they link to the organizationthat created them, and weren’t put on the sitewithout permission or merit.

• Use a filter that warns you of suspiciouswebsites, like the SmartScreen filter included inan Internet Explorer browser.

• Keep your Internet browser updated. Newerversions often offer current technology aimed atmaintaining privacy.

• Make sure to read a website’s privacy poli-cy before inputting information.

• Be especially cautious of any website thatasks for your Social Security number or person-al bank account information.

• When creating passwords, use a lot of num-bers and symbols whenever possible. Manyconsumers use the same password for everywebsite they visit because it’s easier to remem-ber, but you should use different passwords fordifferent websites.

• Accepting cookies when you visit a websitecan allow them to keep information on you andyour browser history. Sites should inform youof how they plan to use cookies deposited onyour browser. You can opt out of online adver-tising cookies by visiting <www.networkadver-tising.org>.

Of course, in today’s cyber world, nothingcan ever guarantee absolute safety online.

ness and government experience as wellas his chemistry with commissioners”according to Mayor Norman S. Edelcup.

NEW SCHOOL NAME At the June 15 City Commission meet-

ing, Vice Mayor Lewis Thaler announcedthe Miami-Dade School Board approvedre-naming the city’s school “Norman S.Edelcup Sunny Isles Beach K-8.”

Last February, a meeting was held in theschool’s media center to discuss the idea ofnaming the school after the Mayor of SunnyIsles Beach. School Principal Dr. AnnetteWeissman explained members of the com-munity suggested naming the school afterEdelcup since the Mayor played a majorrole in securing the land to build the school.

“This is quite an honor,” Edelcup said.“Building the school helped change thedirection of our city and created a youngerdemographic. Cities that keep young –keep growing.”

NEW PLAN FOR GATEWAY PARKIn keeping with continued efforts to

enhance Sunny Isles Beach with the mostdesirable parks and recreational facilities, the City Commission recently passed a res-olution approving a ground lease, develop-ment and design-build agreement for thedevelopment of a park complex at the gate-way to the city on Sunny Isles Boulevard.

The agreement entered into between theCity of Sunny Isles Beach and 4MInvestors, LLC is to design and build anupscale lifestyle center at Gateway Parkconsisting of a park, parking garage andrestaurant(s).

During an April 21 City Commissionmeeting, developer Joe Milton, represent-ing 4M Investors, LLC, explained originalplans to build a Park/Aquarium complexat the gateway to the city on Sunny IslesBoulevard were no longer feasible due tothe withdrawal of support from operatorsof the Seaquarium and the inability tosecure another aquatic-oriented joint ven-ture partner. Milton proceeded to present a“Plan B” proposal for the development ofGateway Park described by the architectas “contemporary – yet timeless.”

Following the presentation of schematicshighlighting an aesthetically pleasing formof “glass box transparent type” architecturefor restaurant and retail space; pedestrian

friendly walkways; three different openspace green areas; and a “signature” buffertrellis feature; Mayor Edelcup expressed thesentiments of fellow commissioners, noting,“This is a fine second choice for us to moveforward with…It’s important to [identify theanchor restaurant]…I would lean towardsthis being a ‘restaurant destination’ and not aretail one with clothing and souvenir typestores. The site will be available for construc-tion by February or March of next year.”

NEW SKATE PARK HOURSIn response to concerns about noise

emanating from the city’s new Skate Parkat the west end of Town Center Park(17200 Collins Avenue) disturbing someWinston Towers residents, it wasannounced that as an interim solution, park hours will be reduced. The SkatePark’s new summer hours will beMonday-Sunday, 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. andSaturday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. On Saturdays, the hours between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. willbe for pre-teen instruction only.

Taking further “proactive action” theCity Commission arranged to have a studyconducted by a sound engineer in order toconsider potential alternatives for enhanc-ing soundproofing at the Skate Park.

Based on conclusions and recommenda-tions made in a Kimley-Horn study, theCity Commission decided to proceed withobtaining cost comparison estimates andbids for either fully enclosing the SkatePark or erecting sound barriers.

NEW RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTFor anyone interested in running for a

seat on the Sunny Isles Beach CityCommission, living within city limits wasalways a requirement – but since votersapproved a charter amendment on May24, candidates will now also have to havelived within the particular residential areathey’re seeking to represent continuouslyfor at least one year at the time of qualify-ing. The “at-large” mayoral seat is exemptfrom this requirement. Out of 831 ballotscast, 539 (64.95%) were in favor of thecharter amendment; and 292 (35.14%)were opposed to the change.

Beyond having to reside within the dis-trict being represented, candidates are alsorequired to remain in the district for theduration of their terms - but are allowed tomove within the same district of the city.Members of the City Commission endorsedthe charter amendment with the goal tobring government even closer to the people.

The 2010 event was so well received, that ideas for the 2011 event begansprouting almost immediately. “I gotmore ideas this year to add next yeartoo.” said an obviously delighted Block.

The 2011 Bike Rodeo taught youththe importance of bike safety in a fun, interactive manner. “These kids arehaving fun, and probably don’t evenrealize they are learning a lot.” saidBlock. “Having fun while learning, now that’s a ‘win-win’ situation.” sheadded. The event began with registra-tion, and a team of civilian personneland sworn police officers check eachparticipants bicycle to ensure each wasin good, working condition. Then thegroup went into the first floor trainingroom for a video presentation and awelcome message from Chief Maas. Atthe conclusion of the indoor portion,

Ms. Block used raw eggs to illustratewhat could occur if a child fell off abicycle without wearing a helmet. Oneof the children in attendance volun-teered and dropped the egg into an un-padded cardboard box, and naturally itsmashed. After a brief gasp form thechildren in attendance, she demonstrat-ed the same scenario with a helmet on.She made a small helmet out of bubblewrap to simulate a real helmet, and thenshe dropped the egg. It worked! Theegg survived, and the children applaud-ed. The exercise sounds simple, but Iassure you the kids got the message.

From the classroom, the kids enteredthe obstacle course. The volunteers thatworked that day deserve a lot of credit. They made an outstanding obstaclecourse, complete with lines on the pave-ment (baseball field chalk) and bumpsin the road (halved tennis balls). Thenthe 25 children in attendance made asingle file line and successfully com-pleted the obstacle course. A lot of

“Ooohs, Ahhs” and laughter was heardthroughout the downstairs parking area.“This is what it’s all about.” said K-9Corporal Rob Ostrov. “Listen to them, they’re having a blast.” he said. Andyes, they did have a blast, and moreimportantly they learned.

At the event, each child received anew bike helmet, and a raffle prize, which was a wonderful way to concludea very successful event. Possibly one ofthe most heartfelt moments of the daywas at the conclusion. As I walked byMs. Block I saw her jotting some notesdown on a pad. She smiled and said“This year was great, but next year willbe better, I already have a ton of newideas.” After witnessing the success ofthis year’s event, there is no doubt thatthe 2012 event will be even bigger andbetter. Congratulations to all those whoattended this event and had such a fan-tastic time. If you missed it, be sure tocome next year, you will have a greattime too!

BY RICHARD C. SCHULMAN City Historian

July 4th is an American holiday ofsupreme importance to us, but it does notstand alone in human history. July 4th,1776, was one of the golden milestones inman’s progress. Benjamin Franklin delight-ed to point out the striking parallels in thehistory of ancient Israel and of the Americaof his day. Our Independence Day had itsprototype in the experience of the Israelites. It was the darkest of their experience, in theculmination of their degradation and despair,

that Jehovah gave his divine command toMoses: “Speak unto the children Israel, thatthey go forward.” That is the most potentcommand in human history, and in it lays thesecret of all human progress, whether nation-al or individual. Every great leader throughhistory has heard it as Moses heard it. Theday of obedience has always been the day ofemancipation, the day of independence.

The birth of our Nation was not on the bat-tlefield. The real struggle, however, whichbrought forth the new Government, was inthe Hall of Legislature. That is where theNation came to life. Every true American

citizen can, if he will, come to his Country’said. He can perform the duties that citizen-ship imposes. He can obey the law, and byexample, influence his neighbor the sameway. He can go to the polls and vote forthose candidates for high office whom heknows to be men or women of integrity andof high moral value. He can implant in hischildren a respect for the flag, and in manyways, prove his or her right to the title of“loyal American Citizen.”

The government of the United States ofAmerica was set up for the people and by thepeople. The people were not created for the

government. That is a fact that governingpowers must not forget in the operation ofthe laws which have been written upon thestatute books. There is no harm in loving ourCountry, maybe a little bit more than otherCountries, and pledge allegiance to our Flagto honor our native land.

Sexual scandals have been multiplying;Clinton, Schwarzenegger, Edwards, Vitter,Spitzer, Weiner and numerous public officialsfrom both political parties. The history ofsuch mis-behavior goes back to the founda-tion of our nation. Alexander Hamilton,America’s young financial genius with aspotless reputation, engaged in one of themost mystifying cases of bad judgment inAmerican history. Hamilton, age 37, at theapex of his career as America’s first TreasurySecretary, leader of the Federalist Party, witha beloved wife Eliza and seven children, began an adulterous affair with MariaReynolds, risking everything of meaning inhis life.

An attractive 23 year old Maria calledupon Hamilton at his front door with a talethat her husband James treated her cruelly, leaving her destitute for another woman.Hamilton went to her aid. It soon becameapparent that “other than pecuniary consola-tion would be acceptable.” Hamilton slipped

through the night to see Maria, includingtrysts at his law office and his own homewhen Eliza was not there. Maria suddenlyinformed Hamilton that she was consideringreconciling with her husband. She introducedHamilton, her financial savior, to James.Hamilton, believing Maria cared for him, could not believe he was being “conned bytricksters.” James demanded compensationfor “Hamilton’s sexual liaisons with his wifeand depriving me of everything that’s dear tome.” Hamilton continued seeing Maria whilepaying blackmail to James.

The sordid matter was exposed by ThomasJefferson’s opposition party, includingcharges that Hamilton was involved withJames on the illicit sale of government secu-rities. Hamilton publicly admitted involve-ment with Maria but denied the remainingallegations. Hamilton’s reputation was shat-tered. On July 11, 1804, Hamilton, who hadaccepted the challenge of a duel from VicePresident Aaron Burr, shot upward, whileBurr shot to kill. Some psychologists suggestthat Hamilton, born an orphaned illegitimatechild, wanted to die due to his “fall fromgrace.” Shockingly, Hamilton left his wifeand children deeply in debt, as he had built anew home in New York two years earlier witha $55,000 mortgage that he intended to payoff from his law practice.
