Mel and Bill were buddies from the time theyspent as roommates at college. They each hadhad a pretty rough marriage and divorce whichthey had helped each other recoverfrom. They were also betting bud-dies. They bet each other on sportsevents. They kept it strictly betweenthemselves. Just things that went onin life situations. They both playedthe social field and bet how long itwould take to bed someone andenjoyed the razzing that went withthe wining or losing of a bet.

A personal subject came aboutwhen Bill’s sister’s best friend moved back totown. Jean was extremely attractive had beendivorced once, no children. Of course she metMel, and he was very attracted to her. When hementioned this to Bill, Bill laughed at him. Noway that he could get any action on her. Thatimmediately sent a signal to Mel and a possiblebet too. He suggested that he could get Jean to goaway with him for a weekend by the eighth datethey had. Bill laughed at him and told him to keephis money because Jean was particular about men

and he didn’t think Mel had any kind of chance. However Mel liked what he saw of Jean andwanted a $500 bet to stimulate him in his chase.

Jean seemed to like him and they did go out. After three dates Mel began to think that he real-ly was attracted to her regardless of the bet. But

he wasn’t going to let Bill know hisfeelings. After all the bet was the bet.

By the fifth date Mel realized thathe was falling in love with Jean andwhat they did or didn’t do was nobusiness of Bill’s. He decided that hereally wanted to marry Jean evenafter only the six dates that hadspread over two months. He took herout two more times figuring he waslosing the bet but hoping that Jean

felt as strongly about him as he did her. He decided to tell her how he felt, ask her to

marry him and to tell her of the bet he haddeliberately lost so that she would realize hewas telling her the truth. He took her out for din-ner, told her about the bet and then stated that hewould like to marry her.

Jean looked tenderly at Mel and said “wecame out ahead. I bet Jim $1000 that I’d get youask me to marry you within those same numberof dates.”

When the Seasons change it is a reminderthat change is an integral part of life.Nothing stays the same not the world andnot you. The sun, moon and stars changeevery day. Just as the Universe is designedto change, you are designed to change.

Not one cell in your body will be thesame as it is today.

The best preparation for change is toaccept it, adapt to it, and anticipate it.Eliminate the stress and fear of change.Keep reminding yourself that nothing lastsforever. This thought is particularly helpfulif you are in a bad, unsatisfactory, unwel-come or harmful season in your life.

Instead of wasting energy avoidingchange encourage it. You can make largechanges by making small ones. Nudgethem along. If you snack or drink at night, find something else to fulfill your needs.Find another way to relax, comfort your-

self, treat your boredom or lift your mood.Find another way to deal with your emo-tions. Find another way to control fear, worry and anxiety.

If you spend too much money on things, switch to cash for purchases. You can putthe cash you would have spent on some-thing into a box or the bank. You can feeljust as good when you don’t buy somethingas when you do.

If your relationships are troubled, you canchange the way you think about the otherperson and the way you interact with them.Try to understand their behavior and thepressures and situations in their life. Makeallowances. Focus on their best qualities.

If you are trying to change yourself, remember that is the only person you canchange. You cannot change someone else. You can change your thoughts about themand that will change your feelings aboutthem but you cannot change their behavioror their personality. Major personalitychanges for yourself can appear more diffi-cult but they are possible. Human beingsare masters of change.

Recent reports of hackers infiltratingSony’s systems prompts me to wonder if bighigh-tech corporations such as Sony andApple are susceptible to hacks, then howhard could it be for information to beretrieved from our personal computers?

A report co-authored by WorcesterPolytechnic Institute computer science pro-fessor Craig Wills is equally unnerving. In astudy of 100 popular websites used by tensof millions of people, it was found that threequarters directly leak private information orusers’ unique identifiers to third-party track-ing sites.

The study demonstrated how the leakingof private information could permit track-ing sites to link many pieces of informa-tion, including browsing histories and con-

tents of searches on travel and health web-sites. With all the data we freely give towebsites, from home addresses to phonenumbers, it’s relatively easy to acquireconsumer information.

Although there have been efforts made bythe government to regulate the leaking ofpersonal information — proposals outlinedby the FTC in its 2010 report on protectingconsumer privacy — it’s incumbent uponconsumer websites to start taking moreresponsibility for their users’ information.Until then, privacy regulations won’t makemuch of a difference.

It also is important that consumers makeevery effort to protect their informationwhen surfing the net, and more importantly, when shopping online.

Of course, in today’s cyber world, noth-ing can ever guarantee absolute safetyonline. However, taking these precautionswill help reduce your chances of beingscammed and suffering the unfortunateconsequences.

As previously mentioned and promised, it is our intent to educate thepublic in specific areas of traffic law, especially those that are mostcommon for violations and hazardous to the safety of all. If one life issaved, one accident is prevented, one driver is kept from receiving acitation, because they are now better educated in the law, then our pur-pose for this column will be SSUUCCCCEESSSSFFUULL!!

SSeeaattbbeellttss aanndd CChhiilldd CCaarr SSeeaattss!!Fla. State Statute 316.614

SEATBELTS This law is strictly enforced and heavily campaigned for during traffic safetyevents. It is a NON-MOVING VIOLATION which will NOT cause points onyour driver’s license, but it is still an EXPENSIVE fine for violations, in mostcases $129.00 per violation. Passengers in the front seat are required to wearseat belts as well.

CHILD RESTRAINTSFla. State Statute 316.613

This law was created to protect our children, sometimes from their own par-ents. Some of the most horrific fatalities in car accidents have been that ofchildren being ejected from a vehicle because of no car seat or improperlyinstalled restraints. An adult driver should ALWAYS insure that ALL his pas-sengers, most especially CHILDREN, are in a proper restraint. What is prop-er or legal?

55 yyeeaarrss ooff aaggee aanndd uunnddeerr::Restraint must be a crash tested, federally approved child restraint device.

33 yyeeaarrss ooff aaggee aanndd uunnddeerr::The device must be a separate carrier or a vehicle manufacturer’s integrated

child seat and a seat belt may be used to lock it into place.Additionally, sometimes size and weight of the child factor into the restraints, but that is due to manufacture’s suggestions, not necessarily the LAW.

By Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz

Recently the Presidentoutlined his boldvision for job creationin America. TheAmerican Jobs Act hesent to Congresswould immediatelyimprove our economyand create jobs with-

out adding a cent to the deficit. The bill cuts taxes for companies that

hire new workers and cuts payroll taxes inhalf for employers, providing broad taxrelief to all businesses. In Florida, this wouldbenefit more than 400,000 businesses.

In August, jobs continued to be creat-ed in the health care and other industriesbut we need to pick up the pace of jobgrowth. It will be our small businesses thatlead the way to getting this economy final-ly back on track. After all, that’s what smallbusinesses do best – they create new jobs.

The American Jobs Act gives smallbusinesses increased access to the capitalthey need to expand their business and hiremore workers. Since most Americans gettheir first job through a small business, andwith 60 to 80 percent of new jobs comingfrom them, we must make sure that smallbusinesses have the support they need to beable to expand or launch new ventures.

The legislation also places specialemphasis on getting unemployedAmericans back to work – from veterans, toteachers, to construction workers and firstresponders - while at the same time puttingmore money back into the pockets of work-ing and middle class Americans.

The President’s plan draws on the bestideas of both parties and the most innova-tive states. It proposes the most sweepingreforms to the unemployment insurancesystem in 40 years, allowing employers tohire workers as apprentices to provide realworld, on-the-job training. This innovativeprogram could help as many as 498,000long-term unemployed workers in Floridaget back to work.

Last month I met with a South Floridamom who commutes frequently and a localconstruction worker. We talked about theroad improvement projects going on in ourcommunity and how they would help cutdown on traffic congestion, shorten ourcommutes and save people time and moneythat could be better spent. These projectsimprove our community while creatingjobs, which is why the American Jobs Actinvests $15 billion toward constructionprojects.

Our economy is heading in the rightdirection, but we still have one in nineAmericans out of work, and we must doeverything we can to get them back on thejob.

This plan builds on previousDemocratic legislation that puts our coun-try back on the path to prosperity by invest-ing in American jobs. The RepublicanHouse leadership has been in place for ninemonths and hasn’t brought a single bill tothe floor to spur job growth. It is time forCongress to pass this legislation – now.

I began this year by joining myDemocratic colleagues in measuring everyproposal by whether it creates jobs, strengthens the middle class, and reducesthe deficit – and I am eager to work withmy colleagues across the aisle to achievethose goals. The American Jobs Act meas-ures up to those standards and Members ofCongress from both parties need to cometogether and pass this legislation as soon aspossible.

Sunny Isles Beach city officials includingPolice Chief Fred Maas were among hun-dreds of community leaders who recentlygathered at Aventura Turnberry JewishCenter to mark the tenth anniversary of 9/11.During the somber event, Chief Maas madethe following remarks:

“For the past five years, and again on Sept.11, 2011, I will have the privilege of readingthe roll call of honor for those 417 police, fireand emergency rescue personnel who gave

their lives that fateful day in the line of duty. After reading the list of names, one by one, year after year, they have become familiar tome almost like I knew them personally. Theywere Irish, Italian, Jewish, Hispanic, Polish,Asian…and the list goes on and on.

“And then I had another distinct privilege. Iwas able to listen to some of the actual radio trans-missions recorded between those rescuers as theyclimbed stairwells, floor after floor, searching forpeople to get them out. The names were familiarto me as they spoke to each other by name, con-stantly checking on each other.

“Somewhere around the 47th floor, theradios crackle from static, it is difficult to under-stand the transmissions now - except for onesingle word faintly heard…Dad. The tower col-lapses at this point and there are no more voic-es, no more transmissions and no more rescues. There is only the still silence of dead air.

“What happens in ten years to some itseems like yesterday to others it has been alifetime. For many it has been heartbreak andhell. Women who were pregnant then – havechildren who are ten years old now. Younggirls who were teenagers then are marriedwith children now. Teenage boys then - havegrown up to become police officers, firefight-ers and rescue personnel just like their grand-fathers, their fathers, their brothers, theiruncles and aunts who died that day. Andsome sadly, yes some, have already forgotten. This is what happens in ten years.”

In April, Rolando Aedo, GMCVB ExecutiveVice President and Chief Marketing Officer, appeared at a Sunny Isles Beach City Commissionmeeting to explain how the GMCVB works close-ly with the city’s Tourism and Marketing Councilto “put Sunny Isles Beach on the map.”

“To gauge how Sunny Isles Beach hotelsare doing, we look at occupancy and roomrates,” Aedo said. “The occupancy and rev-enue per available room went up dramatical-ly in 2010 and in 2011, we’ve continued tosee record growth. The fact that rooms ratesheld steady from 2010 to 2011 also speaks tothe strength of the Sunny Isles Beach brandas well as strong numbers and the goodgrowth rate of overnight visitors.

“This is great news for Sunny Isles Beach andspeaks to the amazing things that have happenedhere. In a progress report recently posted by MayorNorman S. Edelcup on behalf of the CityCommission he noted, “Unlike certain local gov-ernments in Miami-Dade County, the City hasoperated within its means during this tough eco-nomic period. We have exercised fiscal disciplinein managing the City’s affairs. We have investedyour tax dollars in capital projects to enhance themarket value of your home and to create amenitiesfor residents. The city’s fiscal discipline is evi-denced by the fact that the city maintains a healthyrainy day fund of ten million dollars to maintainthe operations of the city in case of emergencies.

“This year, we were thrilled to find out fromMiami-Dade County that Sunny Isles Beach wasone of ten municipalities that had an increase inproperty values. Property values in the cityincreased by 8.3% from the previous year. Theincrease in property values was due to numerousfactors but we can point to our green initiative andinfrastructure improvements as factors in keepingproperty values on the rise. As a consequence ofincreased property values, the city will be able tokeep its tax rate steady and unchanged. The city hasone of the lowest tax rates in Miami-Dade County.”

Picking the right foods is not aboutcounting calories. It is not about the quan-tity of calories but rather the quality of thecalories. Where are those calories comingfrom? You’d be surprised how many peo-ple, when given food options, are cluelessabout which will help increase their metab-olism, keep them satisfied, promote fatloss, or just simply which is healthier.Foods that slow your metabolism and keepyou from burning fat include sugary drinks, refined grains, processed foods (includingprocessed meats), high fructose corn syrup, and junk food. A lot of foods marked as“healthy foods” will contain hidden ingre-dients such as high fructose corn syrupwhich promote weight gain. Carbs such asfructose and grains will affect your hor-mone insulin which is a strong fat regula-tor. You should base your diet on lean pro-tein, non-starchy vegetables, high-fiberstarches, and good fats.

Healthy fats from animal and veg-etable sources are vital for your health, pro-

vide a concentrated source of energy, andwill help keep you full. Some healthy fatexamples are: coconuts, coconut oil, avo-cados, raw organic butter, raw nuts, grass-fed meats, and olive oil. Stay away fromtrans fats which can cause heart disease.Examples of these are margarine, vegetableoils, and soy oil. Another important healthyfat is Omega-3. It can be found in wildsalmon, walnuts, and flax seed.

Protein outweighs both carbs and fatswhen it comes to satiety. High-quality pro-teins include wild salmon, organic free-range chickens and eggs, raw nuts andseeds, lean grass-fed beef, raw dairy prod-ucts, and whey protein.

Lastly, be aware of balancing yournutrients. For example, a slice of multi-grain bread might have slightly more calo-ries and carbs than a slice of white bread, but the benefits of higher fiber outweigh thesavings of calories and carbs. Our bodiesare smart. The body processes the nutrientsit needs and the rest are stored as fats.

BY RICHARD C. SCHULMAN City Historian

“THE MEANING OFROSH HASHANAH”

Literally means“Head of the Year,” andis observed in thebeginning of the 7th

Month “Tishri,” as theJewish New Year. Thefirst of Tishri marks the

anniversary of the creation of the world, which according to tradition over 5700years ago, this year being 5772 and there-fore Jewish chronology begin the year withthis day.

The name “ROSH HASHANAH” doesnot occur in the Bible. Instead, it isreferred to as the Day of the Blowing of theTrumpet, “Yom Teruah,” the Day ofMemorial or Remembrance and theMemorial of the Sounding of the Shofar.

It is also considered the Day ofJudgment, when all mankind is judged bythe creator and the fate of each individual

is inscribed in the book of life.ROSH HASHANAH, unlike the secular

New Year, is both solemn and a festiveoccasion. Its joy is spiritually disciplinedby the sacred traditions of home and thesynagogue. Although the observance ofthe high holy days is centered primarily inthe synagogue, the home is where the fam-ily prepares to meet the New Year, in aspirit of faith, and in a mood conducive toprayer and soul searching.

There are ten days of repentance or obser-vance ending with the holiest day of theJewish New Year, “YOM KIPPUR,” day ofatonement, which is observed entirely in thesynagogue a day of fasting, self denial infood and other physical pleasures is part ofthe tradition of this “Sabbath of Sabbaths.”

The most characteristic symbol of“ROSH HASHANAH” is the SHOFAR, orRam’s horn. The Ram’s horn is used incommemoration of the sacrifice of Isaac. The last moment before Abraham was tosacrifice Isaac, a Ram caught in a thicketwas used as a substitute sacrifice. To honorthe Ram, Jews use a Ram’s horn at reli-gious services. Horns of cows were reject-

ed because these animals were associatedwith the worship of the Golden Calf by thechildren of Israel in the desert, a sin vigor-ously condemned by Moses.

It is used to call each person to recall theirpast deeds and shortcomings, and to engage inthe process of introspection and repentance.

It is mentioned frequently in the Bibleand through the Talmud, and later Hebrewliterature. The “SHOFAR,” was used inancient times to sound alarms, to assemblearmies for attack and to announce plagueor famine. In addition, the SHOFAR her-alded important events such as the acces-sion of a ruler to the throne, or the procla-mation of a rabbinical edict. It was alsoused to usher in the Sabbath, festivals andnew moon and together with other instru-ments was frequently employed as part ofthe worship in the Temple in Jerusalem.

The Shofar call “TEKIA GADOLLA”concludes the day of fasting. Theextended blast expresses the feeling ofthe worshippers that they have extendedthemselves spiritually during the longday of prayer and are now resolved toreach out during the coming year

towards new insights and more mean-ingful living.

“Give heed to the sounds of Shofar, thesharp piercing blasts of the Shofar, rend-ing the air with its message, its portents ofheavenly salvation, summoning man tohis father, to render him homage anddevotion.”

“Renounce ye your sins and transgres-sions, false aims and vainglorious striving, infuse in your hearts, a new spirit to build anew earth and new heaven. Heed ye thesound of the Shofar, the blast that is blown,o my people.”

Specialist, with the department organizedwhat became an outstanding and extremelysuccessful event. Ms. Block included repre-sentatives from a wide variety of publicsafety organizations here in South Florida. They included members of Sunny IslesBeach Police Department and AventuraPolice Department’s K-9 unit, motorcycleunit, patrol officers and SSaaffee KKiiddss UUSSAA,who worked closely with Ms. Block toensure that children’s car seats wereinstalled properly. The idea of educatingparents to this critically important topic wasMs. Block’s inspiration for this entire event.

Also on hand were members of theFlorida Highway Patrol, Miami Dade FireRescue and their Helicopter. There waseven a celebrity of sorts on hand. CaptainJeff Fobb of the Miami Dade Fire Rescue’sVenom Response Unit was here with anumber of his “assistants” – also known as“critters”. Captain Fobb is referred to as a“celebrity” because many readers enjoywatching him currently on T.V’s ““SSwwaammppWWaarrss”” on Animal Planet.

Our event kicked off at 9:00 when atten-dees were educated and entertained byCorporal Rob Ostrov and Officer Luis

Chaidez and their highly trained K-9 part-ners. The “oohs and aahs” ironically werejust as loud from moms and dads as theywere from sons and daughters. “They’rereally cool!” said one youngster to hisfather, but dad was too enthralled by theintensity of the K-9’s intelligence toacknowledge the comment. They watchedthe K-9’s apprehend “bad guys” and locatehidden narcotics. Some were surprised tolearn that the dogs are friendly, and in factare not taught to be mean, but rather tohave fun.

The “oohs and aahs” were even louder atthe next demonstration. Captain Fobbintroduced the crowd to several differentsnakes that are not native and are invasiveto South Florida. These potentially dan-gerous reptiles, as Captain Fobb explained, must be controlled in order to protectnative species and people. One of thesnakes was over 8 feet long, and massive ingirth. Once again both the kids and thekids at heart were mesmerized by thesecreatures. Thankfully, Captain Fobbbrought only non-venomous live species, but used artificial, but very realistic, propsto educate everyone about the dangerinvolved with our native venomous specieswhich include water moccasins, rattlesnakes and coral snakes.

Just when the crown though they wereout of “oohs and aahs”, the City Manager,

Alan Cohen, decided to volunteer to beFlorida Highway Patrol’s “crash dummy”.He climbed into a crash simulator andallowed Troopers Nelvys Hernandez andRobert Pollack to seat belt him in andcrash him into an imaginary object. HeSurvived!! Afterward, he said that theencounter was “eye opening” since theyactually allowed him to roll down hill andabruptly stop as if he were in a collision. After that demonstration, the Troopersplaced real crash dummies into anothersimulator. This device was an actual vehi-cle that had been cut in half in order to beplaced on a flat bed trailer. It was thendesigned to flip over on the trailer in orderto show what happens to the un-seat belt-ed occupant and the seat belted occupant. You guessed it…more “ooohs andaaaahs”.

After the demonstrations, everyone wasinvited to visit a travel bus provided by theMiami Dade States Attorney’s Office, whowas on hand to offer free child fingerprint-ing and to give out crime prevention infor-mation. Then they were invited to visit apavilion set up to learn about “hyperther-mia”, the deadly result of leaving childrenor pets unattended inside cars. A stationarypolice helicopter, from Miami Dade PoliceDepartment, was also in our parking lot,and guests were invited to climb aboard for

a photo-op. All in all, the City’s first Public Safety

Awareness Day was a fantastic day out forthe entire family. If you missed this year’sevent, please be sure to attend the “SecondAnnual Public Safety Awareness Day” nextyear. See you there.
