SIB JAZZ FEST Page 2 •••••••• SEASIDE SPEAK OUT IN SIB Page 14 INSIDE THIS ISSUE BY BARI AUERBACH “Come on babe, why don’t we paint the town?...And all that jazz!” Oct. 15-17, Sunny Isles Beach will be the terrific town hosting the city’s 3rd annual Jazz Fest head- lined by Ed Calle – one of the most recorded saxo- phonists in jazz history, especially renowned for his extraordinary ability to play Bebop. The community is also “jazzed” about more Jazz Fest guests including successful saxophon- ist and flautist Jesse Jones, Jr. joined by multi- talented vocalist Yvonne Brown (sponsored by the Sunshine Jazz Organization); and the Afro- Cuban jazz band Oriente. This year’s Jazz Fest, produced by the City of Sunny Isles Beach in partnership with the Sunny Isles Beach Tourism and Marketing Council ben- efits Miami Children’s Hospital; and Joshua’s Heart Foundation - assisting those who struggle daily to procure food for basic survival. Joshua’s Heart Foundation, was founded by a five-year-old boy named Joshua. The main focus of his vision is to “Stomp out Hunger” in indigent and underprivileged communities and among those who battle debilitating diseases that affect their ability to earn enough to feed themselves. EVENT SCHEDULE Friday, Oct. 16: Musical performances at the elegant Jazz Club at Acqualina Resort & Spa Saturday, Oct. 17: Jazz Fest featuring Ed Calle at Samson Oceanfront Park. Steve has a nice apartment. except forhis rug which is in a class by itself. Hebelieves that most people are too consciousof their rugs and it can make them sort ofpeculiar.

Some of them spend so much time oncleaning them that it becomes more workthan pleasure. He knows from experiencethat as soon as a rug is cleaned someonewith dirty shoes will come along and messit up.

He’s good at messing up rugs or drop-ping things on them. What’s worse is thathe never is aware how klutzy he is when itcomes to clean rugs.

He’s really a cleaned rug’s nightmare. Henever is aware of this and has often won-dered about the glazed look he gets when hetrods on a gently vacuumed rug. It seems tocut down on many visits to homes after hehas been there once or twice.

His place is comfortable for him. He hasa woman that cleans his place every twoweeks or so. She does his laundry and vac-uums his rug. He even has two vacuumcleaners when he cleans up a little and doestry occasional rug cleaning.

One doesn’t work but looks so efficientthat he can’t get himself to throw it out.The other one he bought a couple of yearsago but since it’s nearly new, he’s beencareful about breaking it in. If he comesfrom the golf course a few clots of dirt canappear on the rug when one removes thoseshoes.

That could be the time to vacuum butsince his carpet is brown it could look bet-ter with some clumps of grass and dirt hid-ing the brown stains.

Lately Steve has been a bit bothered. He’s been finding weeds growing in hisrug. He’s thinking of getting some fertiliz-er and maybe grow some flowers on therug. Other homes have flower gardens Buthow many of them have flowers rugs orcarpets?

Then he won’t ever have to vacuum, justspread some water and voilá... no morevacuuming.

Perfectly logical isn’t it?...

Adria Frede and Fred Koenigsberg pose witha copy of the Sunny Isles Beach Sun

Community Newspaper at the underwatermonument commemorating Christopher

Columbus’s first landfall in the “new world”.The spot is located just off San Salvador

Island in the Bahamas, and is believed to bethe area where Columbus dropped anchor

for the first time in the Americas in 1492.

The monument is in a shallower part (depthapprox. 45 feet) of a well-known dive site

called the Telephone Pole, situated just insidethe reef wall which drops down much, much

deeper. Photos were taken by scuba buddies,Lydia Strulovici of Paris & Christina

BY BARI AUERBACH

You can tell fall hasarrived in most citiesthroughout the U.S. by dip-ping temperatures, autumnleaves and brisk sweatersales – but here in Sunny

Isles Beach, there are unique signs the cityis back in “fall swing”...

•• IItt’’ss ggeettttiinngg hhootttteerr...A heat wave thistime of year always makes us feel likegloating just a bit when we talk to friendsup north. This just in...Weather forecastersare predicting a “cold front” droppingour temperatures all the way down to thelow 80s!! Bathing suits and flip flops surebeat boots and overcoats – there’s just one“wardrobe malfunction.” Right now, mostarea department stores are featuringclothes suitable for blizzards...Ever won-der why the buyers think we’d want towear winter clothes to the beach?

•• IItt’’ss bbuummppeerr ttoo bbuummppeerr......For anothersure sign the “season” is upon us, just getin your car and try to navigate through allthe traffic! But one really good thing aboutthe return of the snowbirds is the extramotivation they’re giving us to be morepunctual since now everyone has to leaveearly just to have a shot at getting wherewe’re going on time! Of course, savvySunny Isles Beach residents know thequickest route to stress-free traveling istaking advantage of the city’s own conven-ient shuttle bus service!

•• IItt’’ss ggeettttiinngg ddaarrkkeerr eeaarrlliieerr......The goodnews is now that “after dark” be happen-ing sooner, we’ll have even more time toenjoy the “nightlife” around town! Toobad there aren’t many places that stayopen long after lights go out in WinstonTowers condo windows!

•• IItt’’ss rraattiinnggss sswweeeeppss......All the newshows on TV are premiering and hitsfrom last season are back with excitingnew episodes. But why be glued to thosewhen you can tune into the city’s owncable station SIB TV, Channel 77? Justsome of the program highlights includeTraffic and Beach Safety, Living Green,Community Spotlight, Community Code, and the big show everyone pops the pop-corn for: City Commission meetings fea-turing an all-star cast of committed elect-ed officials, dedicated department headsand concerned citizens.

•• IItt’’ss hhoolliiddaayy ttiimmee......With Thanksgivingalready right around the corner, it’s time tostart thinking about things you’re thankfulfor...For those lucky enough to reside inSunny Isles Beach, the list could includefeeling a tremendous amount of gratitudefor the “little things” like one of the lowesttax rates in Miami-Dade! And when itcomes to holiday shopping, here’s a brightidea that could save a lot of time andmoney...Just send everyone on your listthe name of a really good realtor. Rightnow it’s a “buyer’s market” and the great-est gift anyone could ever get is a SunnyIsles Beach address!

Betrayal occurs when an individual isdisloyal or acts in a treacherous manner toanother person. The individual breaks faithwith that person. They lash out without avalid reason. What hurts the most is whenthose closest to you betray you and hurtyou. When those you trusted betrayed thattrust. It is particularly devastating when aparent or a spouse or a child stops caringand strikes out and actually does you harm.

You will be in a state of shock. Thefeeling of disbelief is dominant. You willgo through multiple emotions. You mayexperience feelings of anger, hate and anoverwhelming sadness. Followed by disap-pointment in your self for not seeing itcoming and for not protecting yourself. The truth is it was inconceivable to youthat something like this could happen to

you. You were innocent and trusting. It isironic because you tried so hard.

Every now and then the world shifts soviolently that it is hard to regain your bal-ance. Things did not go according to plan.Something malicious happened. Youmight feel alone and abandoned by God.

For your own sanity and health, youhave to reach the point of “You knowwhat? So what. Keep letting it go. “Hastala vista.” “C’est la vie.” Let it go into theUniverse Keep changing your thoughtsand feelings. It’s over. It’s done. It’s gone.It may be cruel. It may be unfair. You mayhave lost everything. Your whole worldmay feel shattered and it probably is. Youmay be hurt. You may be afraid. You maybe irate. It doesn’t matter. Truthfully, itdoes matter but you cannot let it matter.

Be determined to go on in spite of thissetback. This is not a cavalier attitude but asurvival necessity. Do not let your mindrun ahead. Do not think of all of the badthings that can happen as a result of this.Put yourself back together.

In 1995, scientists at HadassahMedical Center in Jerusalem, workingwith the National Institutes of Health, made the breakthrough discovery that agenetic mutation linked to breast cancer, the BRCA gene, was disproportionatelypresent among Ashkenazi Jewish women.Since then, research around the world, including research at Hadassah MedicalCenter, has focused on the role of the

BRCA genes in the diagnosis and treat-ment of breast cancer.

As an organization, Hadassah hasadvocated for women at risk to be testedfor this gene, and as a result of Hadassah’sgrassroots lobbying efforts, the GINA Act,the Genetic Information Non-Discrimination Act, was passed. This lawprevents insurance and employment dis-crimination against those who are testedand discovered to be a carrier for any typeof genetic disorder.

This year for the first time, Hadassahwill be partnering with Susan G. BY CHIEF FRED MAAS,Sunny Isles Beach Police Department

“Give me another namefor 172 Street at CollinsAvenue,” I ask my new offi-cers before they are releasedfor solo duty on patrol. Theanswer is not as importantas the purpose behind the

question. I am quite sure they’ll have noproblem finding 172 Street and Collins orTown Center Park, or Epicure Market, etc. Itis the importance of the street naming for alocal hero who gave his life in the line ofduty back in 1928 at that very location. Theprimary name today is “Town MarshallRalph G. Langworthy Street, so named forthe Honorable law enforcement officer whodied in a traffic crash while on duty. His wifeat the time was pregnant with their 3rd child,to be later named David Langworthy, whoeven though he never met his father, did visitSunny Isles Beach to see his father’s namememorialized and the street named in hishonor by our City Commission and thePolice Benevolent Association (PBA).

On Friday, September 10th, 2010, theDade County PBA under the direction ofPresident John Rivera, the day before 9-11,chose to remember all the HEROES whogave their lives on both 9-11 of 2001, and allthe “LOCAL HEROES” who gave their livesin the line of duty. Some of these have beengone for over 100 years but the promisemade by the PBA and President Rivera andhis staff, has never been broken…”WEWILL NEVER, EVER, FORGET THEM!”

And so, on September 10th, hundreds gath-ered in the lobby of the Stephen Clark CountyBuilding where the names of all local officerswho have died in the line of duty were embla-zoned on a T-Shirt and posted on a frame, sim-ilar to the likes of a store mannequin, with thedate of final service inscribed. Family mem-bers, friends, colleagues, public officials, chap-

lains and even the Homeless gathered in thedowntown lobby to remember and recognize.

In a heartwarming but emotional and mov-ing speech, Rivera told the families that theirloved ones did not “die in vain.” And hereminded public officials again, that the onlydefense between crime and chaos and publicsafety and security are the officers whochoose to protect and defend them. Hebegged for the continued support by themand the community on behalf of officers.

Few people know that Rivera himself as apolice sergeant and road patrol supervisor hadan officer die in his arms, in the middle of theroadway, on the midnight shift after the officerwas shot in the throat by a traffic violator.Even the vest he was wearing could not savehim. Rivera cradled the officer in his arms ashe gasped for air. It is any wonder why JohnRivera is so passionate about his officers andtheir safety and getting support for them. Itwas difficult for Rivera to hold back as emo-tions ran very deep at the ceremony. Gee, Iwonder why? By the way, the officer who waskilled that night, Rivera and I both worked for

his father as young rookies. And he would have tradedplaces with his son in aminute, if he had beengiven the chance. Now hecan only remember whatonce was! As a communityand as a city with some-thing very special in ourpartnership, please remem-ber the heroes of 9-11 thisyear, the local heroes whogave all, and keep the PBApledge alive, to NEVERFORGET ANY OF THEM.

God Bless You and GodBless Our America!!

September will prove a pivotal monthas the third quarter ends and the fourthquarter begins in October.

September traditionally is “Back toSchool” time, but I believe it could wellturn into “Back to Business” time. It alsoshould serve as a “ramping-up” time forthe fall holidays. I’m already seeingHalloween sale signs around town and weall know that right after that come theThanksgiving and Christmas sales as weapproach the end of the year.

I’m hopeful that we will see anincrease in seasonal hiring as retailersget ready for the holidays. This shouldhelp cut unemployment numbersthrough the end of the year, butimprovements will not be reflected untilfall employment numbers come out inthe first quarter of 2011. Whether thosepart-time jobs get converted into full-time positions could be a key indicatorof how the country’s unemploymentproblems evolve into 2011 and beyond.

Closer to home, South Florida trade andtourism continue to make gains. I believethe upcoming fall/winter tourist seasonwill continue to see more growth throughthe fourth quarter and into early next year.According to the Greater MiamiConvention and Visitors Bureau, tourism-related employment and room rates areholding up. This means if you’re lookingfor cheap rooms, you may have a hard

time finding great deals around SouthFlorida’s prime tourism destinations.

So what can we expect for the fourthquarter? While we’ve seen signs that therecovery continues, we’re also seeingindications almost daily of it slowingdown. A lot of the lost momentum may becoming from the business slowdownswe’ve seen during the summer.

Although the end of 2010 should showsigns of continued consumer reluctance togo deeply into debt over the holidays, hol-iday spending still may be better than lastyear.

South Florida’s economy will continueto be held back by long-term problems inthe housing, real estate and job marketswhile tourism, foreign trade and foreigninvestment should continue to make solidgains through the end of the year.

Until hiring improves and unemploy-ment rates start to decrease, economicnews will be dominated by weak con-sumer spending, stalled hiring and contin-ued foreclosures. Despite this, we canexpect the fourth quarter of 2010 to be alittle better than the end of 2009.

Watching the recovery continues tobe about as exciting as watching paintdry, but there are improvements in thelocal economy that bode well for thefuture.

The bottom line for families this quarteris: Watch your bills; look for additionalways of earning and saving extra moneyfor the family, and if you do any holidayshopping, use cash and demand a cash dis-count.

Watch Al Sunshine’s “CBS MoneyWatch” reports Monday-Friday begin-ning at noon.

By Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz

It is hard to believe thatfall is upon us. Summerbrought me more timewith my family and more

time talking with South Floridians aboutthe challenges we’re facing. People aredefinitely telling me that they feel moreoptimistic than they did last year, but weall understand that we have a lot morework to do.

Too often we focus only on the chal-lenges that lie ahead, rather than reflectupon some of the successes, and I thoughtone piece of information in particular waslost in the midst of August.

Every year the Social Security andMedicare Board of Trustees produce areport detailing the health of Medicare andSocial Security. Similar to a company’sannual report, the report details the long-term strength and viability of the Medicareand Social Security trust funds. Year afteryear, these reports have been describing thechallenges facing both of these importantprograms upon which almost every seniorin America depends in one way or another.

What was striking news from thisyear’s report, and should be celebrated byanyone concerned about the long-term via-bility of Medicare and Social Security, wasthat the health reform legislation passedearlier this year has “substantiallyimproved” Medicare’s projected financesand that Social Security’s long-termfinances also stand to improve due to thepassage of health reform legislation.Medicare’s Hospital Insurance (HI) TrustFund is now expected to remain solventuntil 2029. That is 12 years longer than wasprojected last year—a record increase fromone report to the next—more than doublingthe life of the fund.

Likewise, Medicare Part D, the pre-scription drug program, is also in financialbalance with projected costs slightly loweroverall than in last year’s report.Social Security also improves slightly long-term, although the Bush recession hasweighed on revenue coming into the pro-gram; the Trustee’s report shows the planpaying full benefits for 27 more years—until 2037—after which benefits wouldneed to be reduced if no corrective meas-ures were taken.

Nearly all of the improvements in pro-jected Medicare finances are due to theAffordable Care Act that President Obamasigned into law in March.

Before this August report from theMedicare and Social Security Trustees, many seniors had already begun to see thebenefits of the health reform legislation, as$250 checks have been mailed out to morethan 1 million seniors in the Medicare PartD donut hole. These checks were the firstphase of the eventual elimination of thedonut hole altogether. The next phasebegins next-year, with 50% discounts onbrand-name drugs and 7% discounts ongeneric drugs. As long as you are enrolledin a Part D plan, you don’t need to do any-thing to get these benefits.

Additional benefits of the healthreform legislation kick in for seniors nextyear with the elimination of co-paymentsfor preventive care services including:• Screenings for bone density, diabetes andcertain cancers• Mammograms• Colonoscopies• Other preventive screenings

Possibly the biggest new benefit willbe the free annual wellness visits forMedicare recipients, vital for the long-termhealth of seniors.

Older Americans are seeing benefits aswell. Over the past several years,

Americans age 55-64 were the fastestgrowing group of uninsured Americans andthe most likely to be denied coverage due topre-existing conditions.

The Affordable Care Act changed allof that. Until the national health insurancepool (the exchange) opens in 2014, if youhave retiree health coverage through yourwork and are between 55 and 64, new fed-eral funds will encourage your employer tocontinue offering health benefits. Ask yourformer employer or retiree health planadministrator what changes to expect.

Of course, the Affordable Care Actisn’t just benefitting seniors; indeed someof the biggest changes in health insurancekick in for plans beginning on or afterSeptember 23, 2010:NOO DISCRIMINATONN AGAINSTT CHIL-DRENN WITHH PRE-EXISTINGG CONDI-TIONS—Prohibits all employer plans andnew plans in the individual market fromdenying coverage to children with pre-existing conditions.NOO RRESCISSIONS—Bans all health plansfrom dropping people from coverage whenthey get sick. NOO LIFETIMEE LIMITSS ONN COVERAGE— Prohibits all health plans from placinglifetime caps on coverage.TIGHTLYY REGULATESS ANNUALL LIM-

ITSS ONN COVERAGE—Tightly restrictsthe use of annual limits by all employerplans and new plans in the individual mar-ket, to ensure access to needed care. FREEE PPREVENTIVEE CAREE UNDERNEW PLANS—Requires new private plansto cover preventive services with no co?pay-ments and with preventive services beingexempt from deductibles.NEW,, INDEPENDENTT APPEALSPROCESSS FORR NEWW PLANS—Ensuresconsumers in new plans have access to aneffective internal and external appealsprocess to appeal decisions.EXTENDINGG COVERAGEE FORR YOUNGPEOPLEE UPP TOO 26THH BIRTHDAYTHROUGHH PARENTS’’ INSURANCEE –Requires plans to allow young people up totheir 26th birthday to remain on their par-ents’ insurance policy, at the parents’ choice.

We receive many letters at City Hallfrom residents who may want to offer asuggestion, compliment or a complaintabout our city by the sea. We have start-ed a new column in the Sunny IslesBeach Sun to address these letters andgive our residents a chance to expresstheir thoughts and ideas.

One letter came from SIB residentChanan Shapiro, Promoter & Event Collaborator withthe Sunny Isles Beach Orchestra. He submitted the fol-lowing letter on the recent Sunny Serenade concert atSamson Park.

THE CITY COMMISSION WELCOMES SUNNY ISLES BEACH ORCHESTRA AT THESUNNY SERENADE SEASON OPENER

The sounds of great live pop music have descendedupon Samson’s Park by the Ocean in Sunny Isles Beach,Florida on September 15, 2010 at 7:30 pm. It was theopening of Sunny Serenade series of concerts sponsoredby the City Hall. The event happened to become the con-summate live music experience for everybody who attend-ed to enjoy. It was a lovely evening of music experiencedby many in the community including Mayor Norman S.Edelcup and members of the City Commission.

Eugene Muchnik, guitarist & Music director, was deter-mined to bring the beauty of live music back to those whoappreciate the genuine article and experience! He foundhis musical soul mates in a place called Sunny Isles Beach, the Florida’s Riviera, and subsequently founded the SunnyIsles Beach Orchestra in January of 2010.

They are an amazing group to watch in action. GregoryKorchmar on keyboards, Serge Kaltchenko on bass guitar,Anatoly Pedchenko on drums, and Mark Kanevsky thepercussionist have clearly established themselves as thewell tuned professional sound machine.

The group also offered an entourage of award-winningvocalists with indelible voices to remember, including MarkKruk, Sabina Stanislavsky, Carmen Amara and VanityMarsh – the past participant of American Idol contest.

They proved to be the relentless perfectionists withenormous amount of talent to observe and praise, and onewould only be too happy to hear and watch them in actionagain. Like true professionals from different walks of life, with rich and diverse musical backgrounds - they jammedand shined to the end of performance in rather difficultcondition of a high wind evening in the park by the ocean.

The influence of American, Latin and Russian pop culturewere evident in all the music they performed, and the man-nerisms of their instrumentalists and solo singers werereflective of the various cultural backdrops they represented.

Once they came out swinging in full force, they simply didno wrong, for they were truly the artisans who aspired to pleasetheir audience and themselves, and to give it away freely!”

Monday, October 11thAmericans celebrate theDiscovery of the NewWorld By CChhrriissttoopphheerrCCoolluummbbuuss. There arethose who contend thatthe Norse Vikings, Irish

missionaries or the ten lost tribes ofIsrael somehow discovered Americabefore Columbus did; but the fact is thatCCoolluummbbuuss alone got back to the OldWorld and spread the word.

Columbus Day is an Italian-American

tradition. A man named WWiilllliiaamm MMoonnnneeyyfounded an organization called theSociety of St. Tammany that had what isgenerally regarded as the first Americancelebration of Columbus Day back in1792. Later on, of course, Tammanyturned to other things and this celebrationbecame more closely involved with anorganization aptly named the Knights ofColumbus. Columbus Day owes a greatdeal to Knights. The New World orAmerica Christopher Columbus discov-ered does not bear his name, but rather isnamed after AAmmeerriiccoo VVeessppuucccciioo.Vespuccio claimed to have been the firstto reach the continental mainland-in 1497

to be exact. Vespuccio got the continent, and histo-

ry has certainly made it up to ChristopherColumbus. And how many cities in theU.S. are named after Vespuccio?Columbus was gifted with courage andwith the patience to stick to the course helaid out for himself. There will always benew dimensions to be explored, newworlds to be discovered, in space, belowthe oceans. Sail on! Sail on! ONColumbus Day, we honor his memory byremembering to sail on, with our eyes andhearts alert for the far horizon!

I had to drive up to North Carolina recent-ly and — as luck would have it — I was test-ing the 2010 Dodge Challenger for the week, the perfect car for the trip.

After crossing the Georgia state line, virtu-ally everywhere we stopped someone cameup to me with a question about the car, whichmade my job of digging up information agreat deal easier.

And the Challenger turned out to be anexceptionally nice road car — powerful andresponsive, easy to handle and really quitecomfortable. By the time we returned, Ifound myself with a grudging respect for thebig American muscle car.

And the Challenger does have a lot goingfor it — an unmistakable design, a provenrear-wheel-drive platform, powerful enginesand technology — to the delight of drivingenthusiasts around the country.

The Challenger is a five-passenger, two-door coupe, but rides on the same rear-drive

platform that complements the four-doorChrysler 300 and Dodge Charger. It’s avail-able in three models — SE, R/T and SRT8 —and you have a choice between two legendaryHEMI V-8 engines or a fuel-saving V-6.

Challenger SE — lists at $21,320 andcomes with a 250-hp 3.5-liter V-6 and four-speed automatic. It has cloth upholstery(leather is optional), air conditioning, powerwindows/locks/mirrors, 60/40 split-foldingrear bench, tilt/telescoping steering column, cruise control, remote keyless entry,AM/FM/CD/MP3 four-speaker stereo, visorvanity mirrors, and 17-inch aluminum wheels.

Other options include an eight-way powerdriver’s seat, moonroof, disc changer andnavigation with real-time traffic, a 276-wattBoston Acoustics audio system, 18-inch alu-minum wheels, ABS and electronic stabilitycontrol and traction control.

Challenger R/T — goes for $29,320 and ispowered by a 370-hp 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 matedto a five-speed automatic. It comes with a body-colored rear spoiler and mirrors, metal fuelfiller door, leather-wrapped steering wheel andshifter, illuminated visor mirrors, dual chromedrectangular exhaust pipes and fog lights.

Upgrades include 18-inch aluminumwheels with wider tires, stability control, big-ger antilock brakes and a firmer suspension.Options include leather upholstery, naviga-

tion system, a 368-watt Boston Acousticssound system, bi-xenon headlamps, 20-inchchromed aluminum wheels, functional hoodscoops, keyless go, remote start, a trip com-puter with performance pages and steering-wheel audio/data controls.

Challenger SRT8 — lists for $39,320 has a425-hp 6.1-liter Hemi V-8, Brembo brakes, aspecial suspension and a limited-slip differen-tial. Many of the options on the R/T are stan-dard, including an upgraded sound system, bi-xenon headlamps, trip/data computer, leather, keyless go, and Sirius satellite radio. The

SRT8 rear spoiler is flat black, the hoodscoops are functional and the fuel filler is pol-ished aluminum. There are 20-inch forged alu-minum wheels and sport seats are standard.

“There’s nothing amusing about gettinglaid off — except when it’s a story told by thebrilliant Terry Shine, one of the funniest writ-ers I know.”

—Dave Barry

BY SARAH BREIVOGE

Nothing Happens Until It Happens To You(Crown, 304 pages, $23 hardcover), is T.M.Shine’s all-too-real debut novel about a manforced to leave behind the security and pre-dictability of his past to face his dysfunction-al family and a world disinclined to do himany favors.

Jeffrey Reiner has been fired — but he isnot crying about it. Though a self-designedsocial misfit, he accepts the advice that tomake it in these tough economic times he hasno choice but to throw himself at any oppor-tunities that come his way, no matter howhumbling or embarrassing.

Egged on by a slacker neighbor, an unorthodoxstate facilitator, and a 1-800 mental health coun-selor, Reiner stumbles into a highly comic andentirely outrageous journey of self-discovery.

Reiner realizes his job loss may havebecome the catalyst for his own family’sunraveling: His teenage daughter has dis-missed him; his only son may have the genet-ic wiring of a serial killer (a reality he fears hemay have never picked up on if he hadn’t losthis job), and he’s certain his wife is having anaffair but is too frightened by the truth (thathaving an affair includes sex) to confront her.

Trying to stretch his meager severance, hetakes on sporadic day work trying everythingfrom dressing as the Statue of Liberty to breed-ing suckerfish to cleaning pools at foreclosedhomes. (Shine has plenty of inspiration todraw from, having worked his own odd jobs, including: pizza deliveryman, lab courier, shellfish harvester, gas attendant, sweepstakesmail sorter, school bus driver, demolition man, drugstore manager, and box maker.)

Despite receiving a strict daily itineraryfrom his estranged wife to keep him on track,Reiner inadvertently finds himself veering offcourse. Suddenly he is trying to balance thesearch for a job with the hunt for a man he nolonger knows.

Inspired by a cover story Shine wrote for

the Washington Post Magazine (after losinghis job of nearly 18 years) called“Terminated: Desperately Seeking Plan B,”Nothing Happens Until It Happens To Youshowcases Shine’s mordant wit and perfectcomic timing.

T. M. Shine is an award-winning journalistand author based in South Florida who haswritten on topics ranging from spending amonth in fourth grade at the age of 32 to hunt-ing down an elusive Lizard Man in the back-woods of South Carolina.
