In the Mounds View School District, teacher leadership is highly valued as many teachers collabo- rate in partnership on a team in buildings known as BILT. BILT is short for Building Instructional Leadership Team, who work with other teacher leaders and the site principal to improve instruc- tional practices, review and provide input to our building’s instructional model, help plan commu- nication nights, as well as the building schedule. Team members include: Julia Hennen (1st), Tra- cy Kuny (2nd), Roberta Locke (3rd), Andy Wait (4th), Sandy Cohen (4th), Jenna Pomraning (LMS), and Jody Wolkerstorfer (Special Education). Joining our leadership team are two site lead teachers, Pam Baglien and Kathryn Johnson, known as Instructional Strategies Facilitators (ISF’s). Together this team works behind the scenes to help Sunnyside continually improve aca- demically on what we do for students every year. Through their hard work Sunnyside has earned both Celebration and Reward status from the Dept. of Education as one of the state’s top performing Title 1 schools. Sunnyside also has a leadership team that works to improve our school climate and teach ex- pected behaviors. Known as PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention & Supports) the team members consist of Peggy Cardenas (Social Worker), Rachel Kanowitz (1st), Lisa Taylor (2nd), Kristen Stanoch (3rd), Nathan Bellefeuille (4th), Pam Baglien (5th), Chris Church (School Psychologist), Joni Bush (Special Education), and Lisa Ketchmark (OT). Regularly reviewing school behavior data, this team looks for ways to improve expectations through continually teaching and reinforc- ing expected behaviors for specific locations (such as hallways, the playground, and lunch- room). The hard work of this team has earned Sunnyside recognition from the state Dept. of Education as one of only 36 Sustaining Exemplar PBIS Schools in the state. These leaders, along with an amazing staff of caring and dedicated educators, make Sunnyside a special place to learn and grow. Thank you for partnering with us on your child’s educational journey! Current 3rd grade students and families:

All students who are entering 4th grade in the 2016-2017 school year have the opportunity to join orchestra. Students may choose to play the violin, viola, or cello, and will have a trial time to help pick what they might want to play in the upcoming weeks. No prior experience is needed, as your child will learn to care for their instruments, play, and read music over the span of 5 weeks this summer: July 5th-August 4th. Lessons are offered at various times throughout the day at each elementary school, and evening classes will be available at Irondale and Chippewa. Students receive 1 hour of instruction Monday-Thursday at the location/time of your choice. Save these dates now, and more information will be sent home soon about how your child can register for this life enrich-

ing opportunity!

4th Grade students and parents!

Band information will be coming out soon. Every student will have the oppor-tunity to try band instruments on Friday morning, April 15th. After that, the registration night is on Thursday, April 21. The directors want anyone and

everyone to be involved and don't want money to be an issue.

Please contact Nathan Blinn at [email protected] with

questions or concerns.

Attention current orchestra students:

Summer Orchestra is right around the corner and registration forms will be available very

soon. The dates are July 5-August 4; make sure to save these dates now, as your child will

not want to miss out on this fantastic opportunity! Lessons will once again be offered at

various times throughout the day at each elementary school, and evening classes will be

available at Irondale and Chippewa. Returning summer orchestra students will learn new

music, make new friends, and have a cool new performance opportunity for students entering

5th and 6th grade in the 2016-2017 (STAY TUNED FOR THE EXCITEMENT)!

Contact Annika Spargo for any questions regarding Summer Orchestra

at [email protected] or 651-621-6676.

Dear Sunnyside families,

Gregg Tranowski, one of our Sunnyside parents, brought to our attention a pro-

gram that UNICEF runs called Kid Power. UNICEF’s Kid Power program gives kids the

power to save lives. By getting active with the UNICEF Kid Power fitness band, kids earn

points and unlock therapeutic food packets for severely malnourished children around

the world. The more kids move, the more points they earn, the more lives they save.

After learning about the program, we decided to apply for a grant that would fund our

school. The grant was approved! We were granted fitness bands for grades 3-5, and

rolled out the program on Monday, Feb. 22nd for those kids who have chosen to partici-

pate. The kids who are participating seem highly motivated to help other kids around

the world – but here at Sunnyside that’s no surprise. You can support your participating

child by encouraging them to get more steps. At the end of the program, kids get to

keep the fitness bands and the charger that comes with it! They can choose to continue

helping kids around the world over the summer. Sorry, but we only have one fitness

band per kid. If it gets lost, that’s that. If it gets broken, we have a very limited supply of

replacements. You can learn more at : http://unicefkidpower.org/
