2018 Festival Adjudicators

ARNE SAHLÉN PIANO

Arne Sahlén performs, teaches and adjudicates to rave reviews: ‘Thank you for the informative and inspiring workshop...You really have a wonderful teaching gift.’ - Victoria, BC ‘Your skillful teaching and your warm, caring presence were inspiring.’ - Kalispell, USA ‘I watched a couple of your classes, and your work is brilliant... you are positive yet honest, and your insights into the music are first-rate.’ - Coquitlam, BC. A piano examiner for decades, Arne has adjudicated well over 100 piano and composing festival divisions. He served on Repertoire Selection committees for the Western Board of Music, Conservatory Canada, and RCME over time. He has been to Cambodia many times, and served as Visiting Professor at its Royal University of Fine Arts. In the year 2000 he received the Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award for decades of arts and human-service volunteering.

CAROLYN CANFIELD COLE BOWED STRINGS

A native of Seattle, Washington and graduate studies in Cologne, Germany, on consecutive Fulbrights, Carolyn’s symphonic career went from Seattle to Vancouver, where she won a 1st violin position in the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. After a 25-year career, with a short stint in a shared concertmaster position, she retired and joined the Vancouver Opera Core Orchestra.

In 2013, Carolyn’s love for horses, connecting with children with disabilities, and playing the violin came together when she developed her unique support program called Violin for Wellness. The focus is to play in the riding arena from the ground as a client rides a horse. This combination of stimulation creates a powerful trigger for neurological change, including sudden vocalization. Carolyn and her program partner are currently working on a research project to support their findings.

Carolyn Cole continues to enjoy teaching privately and regularly adjudicates festivals and competitions. Part of her teaching expertise is coaching and training young semi-professionals in orchestral settings and in mentorship programs in preparation for concerts. Outreach includes supporting the recent wave of Syrian Newcomers to her city through fundraising and concert production. She also provides relief and enjoyment by performing on her violin in hospice and marginalized settings. New journeys are taking her to Montreal and New York as Carolyn continues to pursue her professional development in violin performance.

JENNIE BICE FOLK INSTRUMENTAL

Fiddler, violinist, singer, composer, educator Jennie Bice is at home in many musical genres. From frenzied boot-stomping Irish craic, country & eastern, roots and rhythm styles, to world fusion, rock, jazz and blues, Jennie shines on every stage she meets. Bice began playing fiddle at the age of four around the family piano, and never stopped. Currently recording and performing on the west coast of Canada with Boris Sichon, Ari Neufeld, Roads Unknown, Murphy’s Lagh, The Doolins, Boilie’s Goat, The Craic, and many others, Jennie also loves taking time out every once in a while to teach workshops at a few of BC’s fantastic fiddle camps and theatre camps. A producer, engineer, and teacher at Annwyn Studios, Bice is devoted to musical exploration and artistic inspiration. An absolute delight to watch perform.

LOUISE PHILLIPS SPEECH

A 15-year resident of the Coast, Louise has written and performed original scripts with the Sechelt Chair Actors, including My Mother’s Story, Restless Spirits and her new play, The Wild Flower Book, opening on the Coast in May. She appeared in Waste, A Room with a View, and The Old Curiosity Shop for United Players in Vancouver. Last year she wrote and directed syiyaya for the Sechelt Arts Festival. Previous acting credits include the Vancouver Playhouse, Arts Club, Stage West Calgary, among many, and TV and radio. She recently retired as senior magazine editor for St. Joseph Media in Vancouver.

DAVE FULLERTON WIND AND BRASS

Our Adjudicator brings to the Sunshine Coast Festival of the Performing Arts over 40 years experience as a music educator. After obtaining his degree at UBC, Mr. Fullerton taught at the Secondary level in Coquitlam, Langley, Abbotsford and Surrey where he retired in 2012 as Music Department Head at one of Canada’s premier secondary school music programs, Semiamhoo Secondary. His ensembles have consistently received accolades at local, national and international festivals that include The Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival in Moscow, Idaho, The Festival of the Pacific Basin in Honolulu, Hawaii and Expo 2000 in Hanover, Germany.

Though Mr. Fullerton’s experience has centred mainly on wind and jazz ensembles his experience includes concert choir and award winning Vocal Jazz Ensembles. He pioneered and taught a successful Vocal Arts Program that was essentially an “American Idol” music class. He is a sought after presenter and guest conductor having served for Honour Ensembles with the BC Music Educators’ Association and the BC Band Association. In 2011, Mr. Fullerton was proud to be the recipient of the Dr. Keith Mann Memorial Award at MusicFest Canada.

DON HLUS PLUCKED STRINGS

Don Hlus has performed throughout Southwestern British Columbia as a soloist as well as a chamber musician, including performances with members of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, the Vancouver Opera Orchestra, and the CBC Radio Orchestra. Although his formal training was on the classical guitar, he enjoys a wide variety of music, including acoustic fingerstyle, jazz, world, Flamenco, and Celtic music.

Don has been on Faculty at Kwantlen Polytechnic University since 1993 and has been Chair of the Music Department since 2012. He is also the Founder and Artistic Director of the Fraser Valley Acoustic Guitar Festival, now entering its twenty-first season. Although Don wears many professional hats (instructor, performer, a festival organizer, an administrator, and curriculum developer), his first love is teaching. His attention is usually focused on helping young musicians find and develop their own artistic voice. There is nothing more satisfying than working with students, whether they are just discovering music and the guitar for the first time or fine tuning their artistry and advancing their professional careers.

Prior to Don’s first foray into the music for classical guitar (under the tutelage of Dennis Olsen), he studied jazz composition & arranging and jazz guitar at Capilano College. Don later attended the University of British Columbia where he was the first person in Western Canada to receive a Bachelor of Music degree in classical guitar performance, studying under the guidance of Michael Strutt. He has performed in master classes conducted by Elliot Fisk, Mark Teicholtz, William Kanengiser, Scott Tenant, Benjamin Verdery, Paul O’Dette, and Stephen Robinson. Post-graduate studies were with the Canadian guitarist Harold Micay. Don then went on to complete his Masters Degree at UBC in Higher Education. His research examined how different educational beliefs and values affect the design, development, and implementation of curriculum.

In addition to his duties at KPU, he teaches privately in Fort Langley, and he is a member of the Canadian Music Festival Adjudicators’ Association, the Vancouver Classic Guitar Society, and the British Columbia Registered Music Teachers’ Association (South Fraser Branch).

MEGAN SKIDMORE VOICE

Soprano Megan Skidmore holds both her Bachelor and Master’s degrees in Voice Performance from McGill University and diplomas from the Schubert Institut, Weiner Meisterkurze and Mozarteum in Austria. Currently on faculty at the Powell River Academy of Music, Ms. Skidmore is an acclaimed voice teacher, conductor for the Powell River Youth Choir as well as music director for musical theatre productions.

An active performer, Ms. Skidmore has received praise for her “vocal fireworks’ in numerous opera and operetta roles including Cunegonde in Candide with Opera McGill and Josephine in HMS Pinafore with the McGill Savoy Society. She also has a busy performance schedule in solo recital, concert repertoire and as oratorio soloist in Dvorák’s Te Deum, Fauré’s Requiem, Saint-Säens’ Christmas Oratorio, Handel’s Messiah, and Haydn’s The Creation. Her lieder interpretations have been lauded as “intelligent and deeply heartfelt.” She has been a featured soloist with the Sooke Philharmonic, BC Chorfest and soloist and adjudicator for the International Choral Kathaumixw in Powell River, BC.
