During January the Lead Instructors at Laverton dojo held the 2018 Induction training day for the Laverton Junior leadership group. Children and teens who had been identified to have leadership skills and who have expressed an interest to help others were invited to participate.
The session focused on safety, communication skills, delivering basic instruction, goal setting and basic Time management.
The day was a great success and further training will be offered for the participants. The skills they will develop over the next few years will not only help them become good sub instructors, but also give them the skills to do well in job interviews, class presentations and the skills to fill management roles in their career in the future.
2018 Junior
Leadership Program
Every month at our Samurai Karate clubs we will be focusing on a different theme and talking about it during classes at the dojo. Please support by discussing as a family at home.
The theme we will be focusing on for the month of March is RESPECT. Respect is a way of feeling and a way of behaving. Treating people in a positive manner that acknowledges them for who they are and/or what they are doing. Being treated or treating an individual in a dignified manner. No one owes you respect until you have earned it, so there is no such thing as I will give it after they give it to me first.
Respect is earned and is never just given. You must always behave in a respectful manner as this reflects on you, your character, integrity and values of who you are as a person. A respectful manner shows your character as a person so respect will more likely be reciprocated. Respect is not limited to the relationship between people, it is also about respecting your Environment and respecting yourself.
Respect is part of the Dojo culture, the karate way. We practice it by first respecting the environment, this happens the minute you walk through the front door, you keep the place clean and whole, even how you take off your shoes and put them neatly against the wall of the change room. When you enter and leave the dojo we Bow (rei). When we start and finish a lesson we bow to sensei and he reciprocates the respect by returning the bow. You bow to your partner at the beginning and end of a drill.
Finally you respect yourself by acting in a manner to enhance yourself, your environment and the people around you. You add value to all experiences.
