elveteenCHILDREN'S CLOTHINGA CHATWITH THE DESIGNER BEHIND AHIGH END BRAND FOR SMALL FASHIONISTAS

V

Page 17: Sunshine Magazine

Designer, Laura Eckerman, tells us,"Velveteen is more than just a clothingcollection to me, it’s a little universewhere I try to encourage children to feelfree and inspired by sounds, colors andtextures. I want to inspire them to bebrave enough to meet the world with asense of curiosity."

DESCRIBE YOUR BRANDVelveteen is about timeless style. It isgrounded in a vision of a childhood spentexploring hidden pathways with friends, sharing secrets, and building fondmemories. From a design perspective, I’mpassionate about the magical balancebetween beautiful fabrics that arecomfortable and soft, colors that arestrong and sophisticated, and classicsilhouettes that bring everythingtogether.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?After graduating from school, I went tothe Fashion Institute of Technology inNew York to study textile technology anddesign. Then I went back to Los Angelesto finish a business degree. Fashion hasalways been a key career focus for me.When the opportunity arose to find ourown production for Velveteen, I jumped atit (despite being 8 months pregnant withmy second child at the time).Opportunities don’t often come at themost convenient moment in life, but Ifirmly believe that you need to take themwhen they present themselves.

WHAT'S BEHIND THE NAME?The name was something that I had in

mind long before I ever actually knew thatI’d be able to pull off starting the brand. I

wanted something that conveyed thewhimsical and imaginative aspect of

childhood without sounding childish. TheVelveteen Rabbit was one of my favorite

illustrated books as a child, and the imagery and memories

of my father reading it to meat bedtime has always

stayed with me. I stillhave my father’s copy

of the tattered old booksitting on my shelf. The

fact that velveteen isalso a type of velvet

fabric was alsointeresting because

it represented theimportant role that textiles

play in the line. I also just thoughtthe name had a beautiful ring to it.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITEPART OF YOUR WORK?It’s so hard to say, because I'm busyworking on literally every aspect of thebusiness. Of course, I love the designprocess. I love to really build the story ofa collection, and then watch it cometogether. The process of creatingsomething can be truly humbling. I’d alsohave to say that meeting andcollaborating with some of the amazingcreative minds we work with is also oneof the most fun aspects of what I do. Tosit amongst peers and discuss the manycommon challenges and inspirations weshare creates a strong sense ofcamaraderie within children’s design thatmight not be so prevalent inwomenswear.

WHAT ARE YOUR GREATEST CHALLENGES?I think being an entrepreneur in anyindustry is challenging. Buildingsomething from scratch often means thatyou’re wearing multiple hats, and that youmight not have all the critical skill setsyour business needs to succeed. I mustgive credit to my parents for insistingthat I return to school and finish abusiness degree after my design studies.

Page 18: Sunshine Magazine

The business experience was a hugevalue as Velveteen has grown. It’s helpedme stay focused on doing what is neededto ensure that we continue to grow.

WHAT KEEPS YOU INSPIRED?Everything! My brain is ridiculouslyoverflowing with ideas and inspirations! My only problem is that there aren’tenough hours in the day to do everything! From browsing my favorite design blogsor illustration artists to watching howchildren interact with the worldaround them.

DESCRIBE YOUR WORKSPACE/OFFICE.It’s a bit of a construction site at themoment because we’re shifting our studiointo our first official space this week.Until now, I was fortunate enough to havea small space in the front of our flatwhere my team and I could work whilst Ikept a close eye on the children’s dailyactivities. Now that they’re both in schooland Velveteen has officially outgrownour little space, I’m really lookingforward to having a separatestudio so my brain canstay focused onVelveteen insteadof wondering whenthe next studio raidwill be led by my 2-year-old!

DO YOU LISTEN TO MUSIC WHILE YOU WORK?Music is such an important part of my life.It is a means of managing stress, and asource of inspiration. Most of mycollections begin with a certain mood orfeeling inspired by the music I’m into atthe moment. I’m constantly runningthrough a little mock catwalk in my headfor each collection, and the music reallyplays into the mood I want for thecollection. We’ve done a few behind thescenes videos that are up on the websitenow and I was so pleased with how the

music really pulled it all together. It’s theicing on the cake that can either make orbreak my vision! I go through very distinctphases but some of my “go-to” artists forthe studio include Mayer Hawthorne, MinaTindle, Thomas Dybdhal, Feist and alwaysa little Morcheeba. It’s a very eclectic mixbut they’re all really inspiring for differentreasons.

WHAT'S THE BEST PIECE OFADVICE YOU'VE EVER BEEN GIVEN?

To take the opportunities that arepresented and never to worry about

success, just worry about growing fromyour experiences and doing the absolute

best job you can do. To me, this reallyboils down to a little mantra that I say

every morning with my daughter on theway to school, “Today we’re going to be

strong, smart and kind." I truly believethat it’s the job of the adults in this world

to encourage all children to be stronger, smarter and more compassionate than

the generation before them.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FORFUTURE DESIGNERS

AND ENTREPRENEURS?My advice is a bit

contradictory in that Iwould say you have to be

both the ridiculously optimisticdreamer who reaches only for the stars

and refuses to think small (you must leadby inspiring those around you to dream

and be bigger than they are), but you alsohave to ground yourself in the realities of

what is achievable at each stage ofgrowth. The only real key to success is

hard work and perseverance.

THE STRAWBER

RY PATCH

33

Page 34: Sunshine Magazine

he Strawberry Patch is anoutdoor marketplace filled to thebrim with handmade, vintage, andindie craft goods. You'll findeverything from soaps and potteryto antiques, chippy furniture, customlighting, clothing, jewelry, and awide variety of eclectic vintagefinds. The Strawberry Patch takesgreat pride in bringing the BarnSale trend to Tennessee. It allstarted in 2009 in a tiny back yardin Lafayette, TN. In 2011, after afew growing pains, the event wasmoved to Starlite Farm. Starlite is afamily owned farm nestled on theCumberland River.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?In 2003, after quitting my full timejob as an Internal AffairsInvestigator in the State PrisonSystem to be a stay-at-home mom, Istarted The Strawberry Patch. It wasa creative way to free my mind fromthe demands of a newborn and 18month old. I began makingchildren’s clothing, diaper bags, baby blankets, and appliquédgoods. My handmade goods weresold in several stores across MiddleTennessee. Six years later, I wasitching to try something new. I knewI did not want the demands of abrick and mortar with three babiesat home, but I yearned to sell things. After some research, I found someinformation about the "Barn Sale"trend in the Northwest. I visited theCountry Living Fair in Ohio where I

T

34 SUNSHINE Issue No. 7

Page 35: Sunshine Magazine
Page 36: Sunshine Magazine

met Gina Bishop. Gina encouraged me topress on with my dream, and that'sexactly what I did. I went home andhosted my first Barn Sale in a tinybuilding/barn in my back yard. I think Ihad 7 vendors and 50 shoppers at my firstevent. We were tickled pink! In thebeginning, I had a hard time teachingpeople what Barn Sales were all about.Slowly, the concept began to catch onand the shoppers were hooked.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?After my divorce in 2011, I had to sell myhome. I had not worked outside the homein eight years, so I found myself strugglingto find a way to support myself and my 3children. What is so obvious now, wasn’tso obvious then. I moved the event toStarlite Farm, and tripled my number ofvendors. I was afraid that if I grew toofast, I might fail. However, the first sale atthe farm proved to be extremely successful

36 SUNSHINE Issue No. 7

Page 37: Sunshine Magazine

and suggested that I would get to proceedon with my dream job of creating andhosting Barn Sales.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT YOUR WORK?My favorite thing about hosting TheStrawberry Patch Barn Sale is themagic that happens during theweekend of the event…The combinedefforst of the artisans, stylists, musicians, and food vendors create a dreamy farm-

style wonderland, full ofinspiration and laughter.

WHAT ARE YOUR GREATEST CHALLENGES?The most challenging thing about hostingThe Strawberry Patch is trying to setmyself apart from all the others. When Ifirst started hosting barn sales, there wasno competition, so I was inherentlydifferent. Within the past year, Tennesseehas become a mecca for barn sales.

37

Page 38: Sunshine Magazine

38 SUNSHINE Issue No. 7

Page 39: Sunshine Magazine

Finding a unique set of vendors thatcarefully select the shows theyparticipate in (and also that haven’tsaturated themselves in this area)has become more and morechallenging. My inner desire to bedifferent, stand alone, and be aninspiration to others has become adaily battle. I'll do something oneway, and when I see someone elsedoing it I'll move on to somethingelse. This can be exhausting, but itkeeps me on my toes and keeps thecompetitiveness alive. My events aresmaller than most because I wouldrather be tiny and mighty than bigand typical.

ANY INTERESTING STORIESFROM THE STRAWBERRY PATCH?At our Spring Sale 2013, a blowingmonsoon came through and literallydestroyed tons of merchandise. Some of the vendors' booths werefloating, about 10 shoppers gotstuck in the field, and it wasfreezing. I went into the shed andjust cried (which is funny now). Ididn’t know what to do. MarkGalant, a wonderful musician, saved the day by playing all daylong. It made us forget how nasty itwas. Despite all this, we had over400 shoppers!

Jessica Near is the owner and artistbehind Opposite of Far, an Indiana basedhandmade business that creates unique andhigh quality open-ended toys. Specifically,Opposite of Far makes felt animal masks andtails for the imaginative child! At Opposite ofFar, we believe in encouraging play +expanding imaginations of ALL ages!

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?This all started out as a dream, as allhandmade businesses do. After undergoingemergency back surgery in 2010, I wasforced to stop working for several months, Asecond surgery kept me home and out ofwork even longer, I struggled with myidentity and dwindling work possibilities. Itbecame clear that going back to my previousprofession as a preschool teacher or evenworking part-time as a nanny would beimpossible with the high levels of pain in myback. I spent those months in bed sketchingand dreaming big. It didn't take long before Istarted thinking seriously about making myhandmade business dream a reality. I tookthe leap by opening my Etsy shop in Januaryof 2011. I also applied for a few local craftshows. Before I knew it, Opposite of Far wasreal and prosperous thing! I was living mydream!

What started out as a business based onhandmade plush dolls and animals quicklyturned into a busy mask making business! Inthe Fall of 2011, I created a fox and owl maskas accessories for the dolls I was making. Ithen added child sized masks to match thedoll masks. Three days after posting the child

sized masks, I realized they were going to bea huge hit! Since then, I have expanded mydesigns from 2 (the fox and owl) to over 50different designs! The plush dolls andanimals have stepped out of the spotlightand my true passion really is creating animalmasks. An unexpected surprise! I lovedesigning new masks, and take pride insewing every single animal mask myself! Butmy absolute favorite thing about this job isseeing photos of kids using Opposite of FarMasks + Tails to engage their littleimaginations. It's truly magic!

WHAT'S BEHIND THE NAME?"Opposite of Far" is something my husbandwould say when people misunderstood hislast name. "Near, You know, like 'the oppositeof far.'" Once I took his name, I found ithilarious how often I actually had to use thisphrase to "spell" my name to people! When Iwas thinking about what to call my newbusiness, I knew Opposite of Far was theperfect fit. I love witnessing the "ah-ha"moment when people "get" my businessname for the first time. Sometimes LONGafter we've been acquainted!

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT YOUR WORK?I love designing new masks! The choices fornew animals are endless, so I always havepages and pages of new masks sketched outjust waiting to be pieced together in felt!

Working with other makers has been asurprising perk to starting Opposite of Far. Ihave loved collaborating with other artists.it's really humbling to learn I've inspiredsomeone to create something new!

42 SUNSHINE Issue No. 7

Page 43: Sunshine Magazine

WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGINGPART OF YOUR WORK?The most challenging part of my job/workhas been trying to do it all and feelingcompletely overwhelmed and stressed. I'vebeen trying to practice the mantra "I can doanything, but not everything." In doing so, Ihave had to learn to let go and delegate.Hiring help has been by far the hardestdecision, but also the smartest decision I'vemade for my business.

DESCRIBE YOUR WORKSPACE/OFFICE.I moved out of my home office/studio andinto a larger, brighter studio in November of2013. I made the move after realizing everysingle room in my small home was holdingsome part of Opposite of Far. There wereproducts, printed orders, stock, and supplieseverywhere. I had hired my friend to helppart time, but I had no place for her to sit! Mynew studio is only 5 minutes from homelocated in an old school building. It's largeand bright and most of all, functional!

When I signed the lease, the whole room waspainted a light purple shade. The first thingwe did was paint everything white. The roomlooked twice as big! I wanted a clean andbright backdrop for all the colors I would beadding with my bolts of felt, photos, propsand of course the masks and tails that wouldeventually pile up everywhere!

WHAT KEEPS YOU INSPIRED?Animals, children, books, color, other artists, trends, and seasons. I feel inspiredconstantly! I love my customers and seeingtheir happy, masked kiddos in photos

43

Page 44: Sunshine Magazine

reminds me daily why I do this!I love Sharon Montrose and NationalGeographic for animal photography. I alwaysuse real animals when creating a new mask.I want my masks to be friendly to children, but also recognizable and represent to whatthe animal actually looks like (rather than acartoon version of the animal). I want toeducate children about animals by piquingtheir interest so they want to learn more

about each animal they pretend to be whenthey slip on a mask!

WHAT ARE YOUR MOST POPULAR PRODUCTS?The Fox was #1 for the first 3 years I wasmaking masks with the Owl and Raccooncoming in close behind. Now my mostpopular masks & tails are the Cat, Wolf,Unicorn, Lion, and Tiger. It's fun to see whatis trending and what people love the most!

44 SUNSHINE Issue No. 7

Page 45: Sunshine Magazine

HOW DO YOU SPEND YOUR DAYS OFF?I'm usually ALWAYS working, especially thistime of year! When I do get a chance to takea break, I spend my time with my husband &pets at home. We enjoy the company of ourclose friends whenever we can. We'll gettogether with friends and out to eat, see amovie, or play board games. At least once amonth, I visit my mom, sister, niece andextended family in Cincinnati. I love to read, but it's been too long since I finished a book!

WHAT'S THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICEYOU'VE EVER BEEN GIVEN?The best advice I've been given (I sharedabove) You can do anything, but noteverything. I have those words printed andhanging above my desk in my studio toremind me daily. I want to do everything! Ihave a hard time saying no and settingboundaries for myself when it comes towork, so this is a great message to keepclose by!
