In this lesson, you will learn about how to � nd speci� c information from the text.

A. Detail Items Detail items (speci� c information) ask about explicit details stated in the passage. They often begin with one of the 5W/1H question words: who, what, when, where, why, how, how much, how many, and so on. When you see a question begins with the 5W/1H, you know that the information needed to answer the question is directly stated somewhere in the passage.

To answer detail items, use the following techniques.

1. Read the question � rst. This step is really important to identify what information is being asked (5W/1H). You can also get the keyword from the question.

2. Focus on the keywords mentioned in the question. They can be names, dates, or other nouns—something that make it easier to � nd in the text. Remember these words as the clue to � nd the answer.

3. Find the keyword by scanning the text. You have to locate the information that the question asks about by scanning the keyword. The keyword itself can be found in the form of its synonym. DO NOT try to understand word by word of the text, just scan.

4. Read the sentence containing the keyword. You will � nd the information needed or asked in the sentence in which the keyword occurs. You also need to read the sentence preceding or following the sentence as well.

5. Analyze the information you read in the text with the options.

The correct option of speci� c information is not always written in the same sentence as in the text; it can be in form of synonym or applies di� erent grammatical structures. So, the statement in the text and the options will possibly be di� erent but they have the same meanings. This type of questions may appear more often than others in Ujian Nasional Bahasa Inggris.

B. Key Points1. Analyze the questions through the question words (5W/1H) to � nd out what

information is being asked.

2. Several details may be mentioned in the text, so you must be able to recognize which details are related with the question.

3. The remaining part of the question contains keywords/phrases that will tell you what to look for.

4. The details in the options may be stated in di� erent forms of words and phrases in the text, but they still have similar meanings.
