The “Need for Speed” in Today’s Environment:
Have you seen the performance impacts?
– 5 - 10 seconds
• Using your smart phone, how long do you wait for a web-site to be loaded,
before you consider it to be too slow?
– 20 - 40 seconds
• What happens using a slow web-site?
– You change to another web-site
– Lost of business for that web-site
• 5 years ago, using your laptop, how long do you wait for a web-site to be
loaded, before you consider it to be too slow?
IBM Systems
• Flash storage has been around for years
• Commonly found in devices such as:
• USB memory stick or Apple computers
• SSD: Looks like HDD with Flash internals, Array limitations
• However, large-scale computing use by institutions requires:
• Management of very large databases:1 million Gigabytes = 1
Petabyte
• High reliability – “no fail” storage
• Data security/protection – encryption
• Non-Disruptive operations
• Until recently, retaining “Flash” speed was not technically
possible to address large-scale institutional computing
• 2012 - IBM acquired Texas Memory Systems and invested
$1B in Flash Storage
What is Flash Storage?

Can You Guess Which Day the Switch was Made?

Financial Institutions must now store more data and get more insights more quickly from that data.
However, with data processing capacity radically improved, the bottleneck becomes the ability to
store and retrieve large volumes of data as rapidly as needed.

Why Flash Matters to Financial Services
In the last 10 years:
DRAM Speed 7 to 9x Increase
Network Speed 100x Increase
Bus Speed 20x Increase
Disk Speed ONLY 1.2x Increase
CPU Speed 8 to 10x Increase
Flash has 50x lower latency than
hard disk drives

Schwenk Zement achieved high performance with
24 hours availability by migrating all the SAP
application databases to an IBM System zEnterprise
and two IBM System Storage DS8000
geographically separated to provide high
performance and maximum business continuity for
their most mission critical applications [1].
Cloud Computing
A telecommunications company in Spain, built a
cloud-computing infrastructure using IBM z
Systems mainframes and IBM System Storage
DS8800 devices to support data-storage
requirements. The company established an elastic
platform that enabled them to become a cloud-
services provider and offer infrastructure as a
service solutions to attract new customers [2] .
Databases
A restoration services company in Germany
improved the performance for most mission critical
SAP applications and the underlying DB2
database by up to 50 percent and decreased
backup times from 3.5 hours to two minutes, a 99
percent reduction !. All of this using the IBM
Systems Storage DS8000 [3].
Disaster Recovery
BLOM BANK has been able to minimize RTO and
reduce RPO to around 1 sec at the remote site, enabling
unprecedented continuity of service while being at Tier 7
– the highest level in the multi-site availability
hierarchy by implemented IBM DS8000 storage
solutions as the backbone for its three-site data
center replication strategy.. ,.[5].
DR
Data processing
Fransabank, has seen 40% performance gains for key
processes. The end-of-day process has fallen from
eight hours to less than five, and the end-of month
process from 13 hours to less than eight by using its
new core banking software running on IBM Power
Systems servers and backed by IBM Storage DS8000
DS8K helped a large, global Bank with real-time
fraud detection and credit card processing with Flash
and an API for z System applications, achieving high
throughput, delivering enterprise-class high availability
and data encryption.
A direct broadcast satellite television provider uses
DS8000 in the primary and Disaster Recovery site, and
High Performance Flash Enclosure, as a result its
response time has been significantly improved by 90%.
