The searchThe Gallia County Local School District Board of Education is seeking qualified applicants for the position of superintendent. The new superintendent will replace Dr. Charla Evans, who served the district for 12 years. The board hopes to make an appointment as soon as possible, with start date to be negotiated.

In addition to providing leadership for all programs and operations, the board is seeking an individual who will serve as a model of professionalism, capable of articulating and achieving the district’s educational mission and vision. Cheryl W. Ryan, OSBA deputy director of school board services, is assisting the board with its search.

The Gallia County Local School District superintendent is the district’s chief executive officer. It is his or her responsibility to advise board members on administrative matters, execute policies and decisions made by the board and operate the district efficiently and effectively. The board of education is proud of its history of a positive and stable working relationship with the superintendent and staff. The board looks forward to establishing a similarly beneficial relationship with the new superintendent.

The districtThe Gallia County Local School District takes great pride in its rating as an excellent district by the Ohio Department of Education. The district’s vision statement is “helping students become life-long learners.”

The district has eight schools: two new high schools, one in the northern and one in the southern part of the district; two middle schools; and four elementary schools. The administrative offices soon will enjoy newly renovated space within Southwestern Elementary.

The district also is close to completion of an exciting, large-scale project to build two comprehensive athletic complexes to serve each high school community. It looks forward to the new era of community spirit and support these facilities will help foster.

The schools form the center of a supportive community. The board and staff have high expectations for all students, and seek a superintendent who can help integrate support from all stakeholders — home, students, school and community.

Set along the Ohio River and among rolling hills, the district covers nearly 400 square miles and serves students in Gallia and Jackson counties.

Approximately 2,300 students attend school in the district, where they benefit from a wide range of clubs, athletics and other extracurricular activities. The district receives some services from the Gallia-Vinton ESC. Students interested in technical or vocational prep classes may choose courses at the

Gallia-Jackson-Vinton Career and Technical Center.

The communityThe town of Gallipolis, settled in the late 1700s by French pioneers, is located in central Gallia County, one of Ohio’s oldest-named counties. Residents enjoy the benefits of small-town life, including several annual festivals and celebrations. Bob Evans, the founder of the restaurant chain bearing his name, is from Gallipolis, and the original restaurant was opened in nearby Rio Grande. The Bob Evans farm — still a working farm — is one of the largest attractions in the area.

Several institutions of higher education are located nearby, including the University of Rio Grande and Marshall University’s Mid-Ohio campus.

QualificationsThe Gallia County Local School District Board of Education is searching for a superintendent with a broad educational background, proven leadership capabilities, a collaborative management style, a high level of public relations ability, unquestionable honesty and integrity, and superior interpersonal and communication skills. A person with a passion and positive track record for academic achievement and community interaction and visibility is particularly sought.

The new superintendent should be someone whose commitment to the district is unquestioned, and whose willingness to become an active and important member of

the community is apparent.

Candidates are expected to possess a strong administrative background in public schools, be committed to the highest personal and professional standards, and demonstrate that he or she:l Has strong understanding of current school

law and policy, and can demonstrate this, as well as skills in the area of school finance.

l Looks forward to fostering and maintaining a positive partnership with all board members, as well as the district’s treasurer and other administrators.

l Can be the district’s chief executive officer, able to keep board members fully informed and current on matters important to the district. The board looks forward to hiring a superintendent who will enjoy a partnership based on mutual trust, transparency and respect.

l Has a strong understanding of schools in a rural setting, and enjoys relating to all students, regardless of age level or background.

l Is a creative thinker and innovator who has found ways to challenge the academic achievement of the system and is committed to the belief that all children and the district can achieve at higher levels.

l Is fair, sensitive and diplomatic, and is willing to work with all members of the school and greater community on behalf of the district.

l Is a capable instructional leader who can empower the current staff, as well as plan for the future needs of the district in terms of staffing and training.
