It all started in Ramadan before the last, when I started to have doubts about my own reli-gion. Someone would say: “Oh, the irony; Ram-adan & doubts in faith at the same time?”, but then I would say “Yes! That’s exactly the point.”. Although some people would believe that an adolescent doubting the creed & faith which he had grown up living by is considered as a criti-cal crisis, I would disagree, because that’s the same exact thing that reinforces the Iman deep, deep inside.

Those hesitant doubts didn’t come out from within my heart or soul, they definitely came from something far exterior, like Shaytan, I pre-sume. I started to ponder about one axial ques-tion; is God really there? There were some others which basically revolved around that question, but they were all minor doubts, though. My faith had implanted roots inside my heart that couldn’t be just cut off by some unde-fined skepticism. Nevertheless, it bothered me so much, that I made sure I purified my inten-tions & renewed my Iman deep inside fre-

8

quently, and attempt to suppress that annoying cogitation in my mind as long as I can. I, as a matter of fact, am a bit of a perfectionist, so a little bit of impurities mixed with my faith do ignite a hell inside. It bothered me while I’m pray-ing, reading Quraan, pretty much while doing everything. Apprehension took over me; it stuck to my mind that I could die any moment, and thereby, I might die as a disbeliever. Contradic-tion was always there; praying & the at the same time wondering if God whom I’m praying to is there. I wanted an answer to that everlast-ing battle in my head. I blindly knew I was on the right course by believing in Allah & being a Muslim, but wanted a thick shield against those occasional hits of disbelief.

Nothing came up in mind to do. Although I al-ready had the whole Holy Quraan studied by heart back then, I found no medicine to such bothering dubiety (because of my own human weakness & uncertainty. Quraan always has the cure). Days of Ramadan, hours, minutes & seconds go on and on, with no quick fixes to do.

9

Page 11: SuperMuslims - Ramadan 1435

Every single day passes on with those ridicu-lously annoying thoughts always there on mind. I just wanted to get that “thing” out of my soul. I wanted a strategy of counterattack. My most inti-mate wish was to totally cut out that over-thinking about these things, silence those wild thoughts forever & go on living with some peace of mind. All I desperately needed at that time was to find that impeccably absolute answer, so I would perfectly burn out those voices with the undisputed proof before even whispering in my ears.

Out of the blue, while I was praying at night in the Masjid at the last nights of Ramadan, I had that spontaneously pure thought I was exhaust-ingly looking for. I asked myself: “Hear this rus-tling of the trees outside the Masjid? Who cre-ated those beautifully long Camphor trees? Scratch that, who created that moon right above in the skies? Want more? Who created the sun which rises in absolutely perfect har-mony with the motion of the moon? They can’t just do such things by themselves, right?” Imme-diately, the Quraan backed it up. The Ayat from

“Hear this rustling of the trees outside the Masjid? Who created those beautifully long Camphor trees? Scratch that, who created that moon right above in the skies? Want more? Who created the sun which rises in absolutely perfect harmony with the motion of the moon? They can’t just do such things by themselves, right?”11

Surat Yaseen sparked up in my mind at that moment:

I think I found “the impeccably absolute answer” which I’ve been looking for. It wasn’t me who was brilliant enough to figure it out, but it was Allah who is Gracious to guide me in my mo-ments of spiritual weakness. Allah is Merciful to His creations that He would lead them to Him & to His path of prosperity, which eventually leads to Jannah. Allah is Compassionate so He would not let YOU be misguided when you sincerely look for the truth. If you let me, dear reader, I’d love to take the lib-erty of giving you one succinct piece of advice; read your Quraan. It is full of surprises. 12

"سبحان الذي أسرى بعبده ليال من المسجد الحرام إلى المسجد ميع البصير" األقصى الذي باركنا حوله لنريه من آياتنا إنه هو الس

“Exalted is He who took His Servant by night from al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid al- Aqsa, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Seeing.” 1400 years ago, Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) lost both his uncle Abu Talib and his beloved wife, Khadija (R), in a single year. Such emo-tional blows were near catastrophic to the Prophet (PBUH); his uncle was the man who de-fended him against the horrible treatment of Quraish and his wife was his backbone through-out the most difficult years in delivering his mes-sage of Tawheed. Losing them both was almost unbearable to the Prophet (PBUH). The year was labelled the “Year of Grief” or “Aam Al-Hozn” because of these two major incidents.

To lighten the heart of the Prophet (PBUH), Allah, the Most-Merciful, sent for his Prophet to

14

Page 16: SuperMuslims - Ramadan 1435

visit the skies. It was on that night that the Prophet (PBUH) was carried on the back of the Buraq to Al-Aqsa mosque and was given the irreplaceable honor of leading all the prophets in prayer.

When he later that night returned to Mecca and explained his story to Quraish, they immedi-ately rejected it, claiming it impossible to cover such a distance in such a little time. Expecting that Abu Bakr would share their opinion, they ap-proached him. And his reply was:“If he said it, then I believe him…I believe him in much more than that” earning him the nickname of “The Truthful” or “Al-Siddiq”.

Al-Aqsa isn’t like any other place in Islam, no, for it was the first Qibla to which the Muslims would pray before being commanded by Allah (SWT) to pray towards the Kaaba. It holds im-mense religious significance from the time of the Prophet (PBUH) all the way to Saladin in the 12th century. It means a lot to us Muslims up to this very day.

15

Page 17: SuperMuslims - Ramadan 1435

But today Al-Aqsa has become one of the most heated areas of fights between Palestinian Mus-lims and Jews. In 1948, the state of Israel was declared in Palestinian lands. Ever since, Jews have been encroaching on the Muslims in Jeru-salem (where Al-Aqsa lies), trying to push them out. Thousands have been killed over the past decade and to this day – Palestinians are forced to evacuate their homes in an attempt to escape the terror the Israeli military continues to uncaringly display.

A total of 66 resolutions have been issued by the United Nations, demanding that Israel ends its reign of terror over the Palestinian civilians. Needless to say, these resolutions have been arrogantly ignored.

When I was a little younger, I would open TV and watch the fights in Palestine. I would see little kids running, their clothes drenched in sweat and blood. I’d see the tears heating up in their eyes as they would try to fight back with

16

Page 18: SuperMuslims - Ramadan 1435

little stones. I’d watch as a mother would franti-cally refuse to leave the battle site without her son’s body…I’d see a father and his son hiding behind a canister, with the father putting his arm around his son in an attempt to protect him from bullets….

And that’s precisely the problem. We see so much. But we do little. We get heated up at times of significant events, but forget that every day, dozens of our Muslim brothers and sisters are losing their lives to what Israel calls “Peace Attempts”. They are begging for our support, and yet we continue to ignore their cries.

If we as Muslims don’t have the willingness to stand up for our fellow Muslims, who should? The least you can do is spread awareness. Al-Aqsa is a religious center for Muslims – doesn’t it deserve we stand up for it?

I’ve heard quite a lot about Israeli-Arab Peace treaties. But I for one am not convinced with Peace That Kills. What about you? 17

An Islamic Perspective on the World Cup

I rooted for Spain till the end. The very bitter end.

Though honestly it was over the moment Xabi Alonso subbed out in the first game. Now it is up for my second team, USA, to play well enough that my friends will forget that I ever supported Spain. With players like Howard and Brooks, they have a fair shot, I think.

Yes, I am one of those people. Someone who has the game schedule written into her journal and refuses to go to an outing during a game if it isn’t to watch the game. In fact, the other day, I was gathered with others like me for the Chile-Brazil game. As the penalties were being kicked one by one to determine the outcome, the Athan on my phone went off. Automatically, someone in the group reached over and si-lenced it so as not to miss a second of the com-mentary.

In the uproar of Chile missing its last goal, my mind starting working overtime. I had originally written this article about Muslims in the World

20

Cup and records that we’ve set in previous Cups. However, I realized in that moment, that maybe we’ve got a bigger problem than our wilt-ing soccer pride (although Algeria hasn’t played too bad in this tournament).

At the time of the Prophet, competitions of physi-cal ability (such as horseback riding and ar-chery) were held with money prizes, so I’m not here to say that the World Cup is totally haram, haram, haram. In fact, I will argue that – aside from structural issues within FIFA itself – the World Cup actually has numerous benefits. Among which is that it encourages kids to go outside to play like Khedira or Özil (who, on a side note, are two of the Muslims playing in this World Cup) and thus building a physically fit Ummah; it also brings people together and offers awesome opportunities for strengthening the Ummah bond and great opportunities for dawah (for example, Br. Omar Suleiman and his team of Brazil street-dawah which has spread the message to thousands). Not to men-tion it builds economy of the host country and

22

Page 24: SuperMuslims - Ramadan 1435

encourages a more engaging and accepting world community.

One might say however, that the competitions at the time of the Prophet were for practical skills needed at that time. But in a world where cars have replaced horses and guns have ren-dered bows-and-arrows as toys, our ‘practical skills’ like how to google or use an iPhone, are pretty lacking in physical activity. Thus playing soccer becomes a way to keep the youth of our Ummah strong.

That being said, the moment we delay our prayer in order to watch a game, the World Cup becomes haram. The moment we fight each other, and cause divisions between Muslim com-munities or individuals because of the outcome of a game, it becomes haram. Alhamdulilah, the length of soccer shorts has grown since the 70s, but still, if a girl watches the game to check out the players, it becomes haram for her and if a guy watches the games to scan the bleach-ers, then it becomes haram for him too.

23

Page 25: SuperMuslims - Ramadan 1435

Like anything, the World Cup hold numerous benefits and harms. T’is our job as Muslims to make sure we get all of the good and avoid every drop of bad.

The Qur’aan & Modern Science :Compatible or Incompatible

Exce-rpt from The Qur'aan25

Page 27: SuperMuslims - Ramadan 1435

A few years ago a group of Arabs collected all information concerning embryology from the Qur’aan, and followed the instruction of the Qur’aan: “If ye realise this not, ask Of those who possess the Message.” [Al-Qur’aan 16:43 & 21:7]. All the information from the Qur’aan so gathered, was translated into English and pre-sented to Prof. (Dr.) Keith Moore, who was the Professor of Embryology and Chairman of the Department of Anatomy at the University of To-ronto, in Canada. At present he is one of the highest authorities in the field of Embryology. He was asked to give his opinion regarding the information present in the Qur’aan concerning the field of embryology. After carefully examin-ing the translation of the Qur’aanic verses pre-sented to him, Dr. Moore said that most of the in-formation concerning embryology mentioned in the Qur’aan is in perfect conformity with modern discoveries in the field of embryology and does not conflict with them in any way. He added that there were however a few verses, on whose scientific accuracy he could not com-ment. He could not say whether the statements

26

Page 28: SuperMuslims - Ramadan 1435

were true or false, since he himself was not aware of the information contained therein.

There was also no mention of this information in modern writings and studies on embryology. One such verse is: “Proclaim! (or Read!) In the name Of thy Lord and Cherisher, Who created – Created man, out of A (mere) clot Of con-gealed blood.” [Al-Qur’aan 96:1-2]

The word alaq besides meaning a congealed clot of blood also means something that clings, a leech-like substance. Dr. Keith Moore had no knowledge whether an embryo in the initial stages appears like a leech. To check this out he studied the initial stage of the embryo under a very powerful microscope in his laboratory and compared what he observed with a dia-gram of a leech and he was astonished at the striking resemblance between the two! In the same manner, he acquired more information on embryology that was hitherto not known to him, from the Qur’aan. Dr. Keith Moore answered about eighty questions dealing with embryologi-

27

Page 29: SuperMuslims - Ramadan 1435

cal data mentioned in the Qur’aan and Hadith. Noting that the information contained in the Qur’aan and Hadith was in full agreement with the latest discoveries in the field of embryology, Prof. Moore said, “If I was asked these ques-tions thirty years ago, I would not have been able to answer half of them for lack of scientific information”

Dr. Keith Moore had earlier authored the book, ‘The Developing Human’. After acquiring new knowledge from the Qur’aan, he wrote, in 1982, the 3rd edition of the same book, ‘The Develop-ing Human’. The book was the recipient of an award for the best medical book written by a single author. This book has been translated into several major languages of the world and is used as a textbook of embryology in the first year of medical studies.

In 1981, during the Seventh Medical Confer-ence in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, Dr. Moore said, “It has been a great pleasure for me to help clarify statements in the Qur’aan about

28

Page 30: SuperMuslims - Ramadan 1435

human development. It is clear to me that these statements must have come to Muhammad from God or Allah, because almost all of this knowledge was not discovered until many centu-ries later. This proves to me that Muhammad must have been a messenger of God or Allah.”

Dr. Joe Leigh Simpson, Chairman of the Depart-ment of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, at the Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, U.S.A., proclaims: “...these Hadiths, sayings of Muham-mad (pbuh) could not have been obtained on the basis of the scientific knowledge that was available at the time of the writer (7th century). It follows that not only is there no conflict be-tween genetics and religion (Islam) but in fact re-ligion (Islam) may guide science by adding rev-elation to some of the traditional scientific ap-proaches… there exist statements in the Qur’aan shown centuries later to be valid which support knowledge in the Qur’aan having been derived from God.”

Lisa Wade’s article The Balancing Act of Being Female, she discusses the daily struggle women face live through on the verge of con-forming the expectations of an over-sexualized society. From dress to conduct, all is sized up and judged for social recognition; when being flirty is appealing, and what crosses the line into ‘asking for it.’ At the workplace, she has to be ‘proper’ but not in the least bit ‘prude’ and the slightest offense just might result into being downright inappropriate and entirely undesir-able.

Unfortunately, many women subject them-selves to these pressures as they alter them-selves whilst dressing up to convey the attitude each occasion demands. Oftentimes, this pres-sure is overlooked and is mistaken for the woman’s freedom and natural right to look good and feel desired. That’s precisely what they want you to believe. Sadly, resulting in women spending in excess – even more than they can afford sometimes and discounting themselves to ultimately achieve the nod of approval from a

32

Page 34: SuperMuslims - Ramadan 1435

society that objectifies their femininity.

The anxiety this builds on women who are unable to conform to the delusions of the media and fashion magazines is brutally oppressive. A young student I knew stopped me on my way to class, holding back her tears, and desperate for help. She expressed her wish to end her life be-cause ‘everyone hates me and makes fun of me because I am ugly and I am not feminine enough.’ The girl was intelligent and hardwork-ing, but suffered terrible peer pressure because she did not dress, wax, or style her hair like other girls. I was revolted by our inability to accept human beings as they are without trying to smooth the rough edges and adjust them to our liking; making us all clones of the ideal stere-otype.

This ideal stereotype is persistently reinforced through advertisements and the entertainment industry; exercising enormous influence on our minds, social-emotional stances and confi-dence. Subliminal messages engraved in bill-

33

Page 35: SuperMuslims - Ramadan 1435

boards stare down at the city telling us how ‘Slim is the in thing,’ while T.V. commercials tell us that not having the latest cell phone or flaw-less skin makes one worthless. It tells us that people who stutter stand no chance at all for their appalling, socially incorrect disability. The images, stereotypes, and values adapted from the entertainment, cosmetic, and advertis-ing industries are insensitive. The pressure they exert on women to look, dress, and act a certain way, or otherwise be condemned to being a social outcast. Additionally, the commercial ethic values physicality more than anything else which smothers the natural diversity of human beings.

God made us in varying shapes, sizes, colors, and personalities because that is how the world was meant to be. This diverse palette is instead painted over with a plastic hue in one unvary-ing, flat stroke of sameness. Women mutilate their own bodies to feel more accepted via Botox, nose-jobs, liposuction, and plastic sur-geries all of which have been steadily on the

34

Page 36: SuperMuslims - Ramadan 1435

rise.

OThat said, the Muslim veil (or hijab) takes on a particular significance. For me, it is a refusal and rebellion in attempts to decompose the blindly followed incorrect, pollution of false media and advertising in an over-sexualized so-ciety. It is immensely liberating from the pres-sure of conforming to superficial social stand-ards. It is a refusal to subject myself to being judged based on my outer appearance, the clothes I wear or the lustful stares of an on-looker. It raises me onto a more spiritual and in-tellectual; defining my social interaction while deflecting attention away from physicality. That, my friend, is true liberation. “Maybe she is more than the skin she is in, maybe we should start learning how to love what’s within..”—Boona Muhammad

Page 39: SuperMuslims - Ramadan 1435

Assalamu’alaikum my dear brothers and sis-ters, I would like to wish you all Ramadan Kareem, and may Allah allow you to take full advantage of this month. Aameen. In order for our actions to be righteous, we must have a righteous mind, and one which is rooted in Taqwa. If you desire to become a better Muslim, you inshaAllah are a person who pos-sesses Taqwa. With that, your actions follow. One very important action I would like to inform you about is guarding the tongue. At the very simplest, it means ensuring that your tongue abides by the commandments of Allah. There are numerous, but powerful ahadeeth which will explain the gravity of this subject. Sahl Ibn Sa'ad (radyAllaahu ‘anhu) reported that Allah’s Messenger (sallAllaahu ‘alayhiwasallam) said: “Whoever can guarantee for me (that he will guard) what isbetween his jaws (tongue) and what is between

38

Page 40: SuperMuslims - Ramadan 1435

his legs (private parts), I willguarantee for him Paradise.” [Saheeh - Re-ported by Al-Bukhari] How many of us would like a guaranteed en-trance into Paradise? Would there be anyone who would be foolish enough to forego this guar-antee? This is the weight that is given to guard-ing our tongue. The gravity of it is such that it is mentioned alongside with the assurance of the ultimate success in the Hereafter. How exactly do we accomplish this feat? Abu Hurairah (radyAllaahu ‘anhu) reported that he heard the Prophet (sallAllaahu ‘alayhiwasallam) say: “Indeed, the servant (of Allah) will speak a word, while beingunaware of (its consequences), and due to it, he will be cast into the Hellfire, farther than the distance between the east and the west.” [Saheeh - Reported by Al-Bukhari & Muslim] This hadith shows the punishment of ONE word

39

Page 41: SuperMuslims - Ramadan 1435

said due to being unaware of consequences of what word is uttered. If one word we say out of carelessness can do this much damage, can we even begin to imagine how many regrettable statements we have said which do not comply with Allah’s commands? How many people have we backbitten, and slandered? How many times have we complained about a test that Allah has given us? How many times have we grown angry and spoken words displeasing to Allah? These are all too common of problems. “Those who repress their anger and pardon people. Verily, Allah loves thegood doers.” [Surah Aali ‘Imraan: 134] This Ramadan, we will be tested. We will come across situations where we will become upset and be forced to hold our tongue, otherwise our fast will become less precious. As slaves of Allah, we must act the part, and always promote goodness, condemn evil and remember Allah. We must suppress our anger and forgive our brothers and sisters. We must learn to use our

40

Page 42: SuperMuslims - Ramadan 1435

tongues to our advantage and speak only with knowledge. May Allah guide us to becoming of those who guard their tongue. Aameen!

41

Q&A

43

Page 45: SuperMuslims - Ramadan 1435

1. Why am I never productive in Ramadan? Over-eating and over-sleeping are probably the main reasons for your unproductivity during Ra-madan. In order to embrace Ramadan cor-rectly, you need to understand that Ramadan’s purpose is to tame our inner animal not unleash it, it’s is about discipline not about sleeping all day and eating all night!

Having a right/healthy sleeping pattern is the foundation to any goal you want to achieve during Ramadan; النهار وجعلنا لباسا الليل وجعلنا ,And on Maghrib time .[Al-Naba’: 10-11] معاشا‘break your fast’ not your stomach. A full/uncapable-of-breathing stomach is contra-dicting to the idea of fasting, and it will never take you to the Masjid for Taraweeh/Tahajjud prayer.

The Prophet (PBUH) said:ما مأل ابن آدم وعاء شرا من بطنه، بحسب ابن آدم لقيمات يقمن صلبه، فإن كان البد فاعال فثلث لطعامه وثلث لشرابه

44

Page 46: SuperMuslims - Ramadan 1435

2. How does Shaytan take advantage of my sin?

When we disappoint someone we always tend to avoid him, because we feel like we let them down. When we sin, it’s Allah whom we are dis-appointing. And Shaytan always tries to pull you away from His mercy after you sinned by making you feel like a hypocrite, like “How dare you go pray after you sinned, hypocrite?!”.So what happens is that you are being more and more distant from Allah because you feel shame, but this is not shame, this is Shaytan taking advantage of your sin. Allah is asking you not give up on yourself, even if you have showered yourself with sins.”

52

Page 54: SuperMuslims - Ramadan 1435

Page 57: SuperMuslims - Ramadan 1435

57

Page 59: SuperMuslims - Ramadan 1435
