IntroductionThe Supervisory Essentials Program (SEP) is designed to help University of Connecticut’s front line and mid-level supervisors improve their supervisory skills so they can have an immediate and positive impact on the people they lead.

AudienceSEP is designed for new supervisors as well as existing supervisors who want to improve their supervisory skills. This program offers a valuable opportunity to develop supervisors, many of whom have expanded their scope of responsibilities and supervision.

CostSEP is provided at no cost to your department.

Program CalendarBarring any budgetary constraints, SEP runs every fall and spring semester. For the current schedule, please visit the University’s Pro-Dev self registration system at: http://prodev.uconn.edu

1. introduction to sep and disc: discovering your management style Full DayThis course helps participants understand the expanding role of the supervisor in today’s work environment and at UConn. We will focus on effective supervisory behaviors and their application in the job. We will also raise participant’s awareness ( through an online behavioral assessment) abour their preferred supervisory style: specifically, their style towards directing, delegating, motivating and developing others.

2. on-the-Level communication Half DayThis course helps participants focus on the fundamental, yet critical skills of listening, questioning, informing and responding. These inter-actions include gathering information, identifying issues and concerns, addressing needs, building effective work relationships, and provid-ing good information. Participants also consider how to adapt their DiSC style to communicate more effectively with others.

5. coaching through conflict Full DayThis course helps participants apply a coaching model to address workplace conflict that will create mutually beneficial outcomes. Partici-pants will practice initiating effective interactions when faced with challenging situations and learn when to enable others to take responsi-bility for resolving workplace conflict.
