HARTFORD, CONN., GOODWINS. The very complete records of the Hartford Goodwins, compiled

for Hon. James J. Goodwin, fails to trace the family of Eleazer Goodwin number 850 of that work. His descendants have been found in the search for the Southern Goodwins, but the name is spelled Goodwyn.

Eleazer Goodwin (Eleazer, Eleazer, Nathaniel, William, Ozias), born in New Hartford, Connecticut, and baptized there April 12, 1767, married January 24, 1788, Hannah Mer- rill, born in 1767, and died February 10, 1813. Her father died April 22, 1812, aged sixty-six years, and her mother died July 19, 1833, aged eighty-eight years. They resided, according to the Hartford Goodwin book, in Bridgewater, Oneida county, N.Y., in 1800, and ill Sangerfield, in the same county, in 1805. From the Merrill family came the Skaneateles estate, which was never sat- isfactorily settled, owing to the impossibility of finding all the heirs. The names of the children differ slightly from the Hartford record. The latter gives Clarissa instead of Clarinda, and does not give a Harvey or a Harriet, while the Southern records omit Hiram, Harlow and Elizabeth. Children: i. Clarinda (Clarissa), baptized Aug. 23, 1789, living in 1890; ii. Hiram, baptized Octo- ber 27, 1793; iii. Elias, born February 21, 1794, married Eliza- beth Tarlton; iv. Harlow; v. Philo, married and left six chil- dren; vi. Harvey, married and left two children; vii. Elizabeth; viii. Harriet, living in 1890.

Elias Goodwin (Eleazer), born February 21, 1794, married September 14, 1819, Elizabeth Tarlton, born January 18, 1803, daughter of Jeremiah and Catherine (Hilemon) Tarlton, who were married March 1, 1791. They resided in or near New Albany, Ind., where Mr. Goodwin died January 24, 1836. On December 25, 1836, his widow married Theodore J. Barnett, by whom she had two children, Maria L., born January 15, 1838, and Isabella K.., born July 29, 1840. About 1825 Philo M. Good- win moved to New Orleans and changed the spelling of the name to Goodwyn. His four brothers also made the same change when they removed to New Orleans a few years later. Rev. Alexander E. Goodwyn is said to have the complete family records, but no reply has been received from him, a change of residence now

1820, in New Albany, Ind., married Angeline Moore. They re- sided at Opelousas, La. Mr. Goodwyn died November 15, 1882. Children: i. Howard G., born April 10, 1850, married Luella D. Lewis; ii. Watson D., died; iii. Elizabeth, died; iv. Philo, re- sides in New Orleans; v. Marvin, resides in New Orleans.

Howard G. Goodwyn (Philo Merrill, Elias, Eleazer), born April 10, 1850, in Opelousas, La., married February 22, 1881, at Colfax, La., Luella D. Lewis. By occupation he was editor of the Colfax (La.) Chronicle. They resided in Colfax, La. Chil- dren: i. Angeline Evaline, born 1882; ii. Alfred Merrill, born 1883; iii. Gertrude Luella, born 1885; iv. Elizabeth Deal, born 1886; v. Ethel Fitzallen, born 1887; vi. Howard Keener, born 1889; vii. Viola Valentine, born 1891; viii. Philo Marvin, born 1895; ix. Grace Constance, born 1897.

Simeon Tarltot Goodwyn (Elias, Eleazer), born March 6, 1822, near New Albany, Ind., married, first, in 1855, at Louis- ville, Ky., Maggie McChesney, born in Frankfort, Ky., daughter of John C. and Jane D. (Hardin) McChesney, she a sister of P. Wat. Hardin. By occupation he was a bookkeeper, in politics a Democrat, and in religion a Methodist. They resided in New Orleans, La., where he died January 2, 1896. His first wife died in Carroll county, Miss., August 21, 1864. The names of his second and third wives have not been furnished. Samuel McChesney Goodwyn (Simeon Tarlton, Elias, Elea- zer), born February 10, 1856, in New Orleans, La., was married October 25, 1882, at Milton, Fla., to Sarah Alice Milligan, born February, 1858, in Milton, daughter of Rufus and Caroline (Franklin) Milligan. By occupation lie was a mechanic, in politics a Democrat, and in religion a Methodist. They resided in New Orleans, and (1899) Taylor, Texas. Child: i. Clarence M., born February 24, 1884.

George IWilson Warf/eld Goodwyn (Elias, Eleazer), born Jan- uary 16, 1824, in New Albany, Ind., was married, first in 1845, in New Orleans, La., to Martha Alice Halloran, born September 8, 1829, daughter of Nicholas and Halloran. By occupa- tion he was a merchant, in politics a Democrat, and in religion a Methodist. They resided in New Orleans, where Mrs. Goodwyn died February 2, 1872. Mr. Goodwyn was married, second, Jan- uary 25, 1877, in New Orleans, to Emma C. Garrett. They re- sided after 1883 in Waco, Texas, where Mr. Goodwyn died Octo- ber 14, 1898. A Bible entry shows that his mother's sister mar- ried a Warfield, which accounts for one of Mr. Goodwyn's given names. Emma Calhoun, who married Benjamin Moss Goodwyn, is a sister of Hon. William J. Calhoun, of Danville, Ill., an Inter- state railway commissioner. Children by first wife: i. Annie, born 1846, died young; ii. Lizzie, born 1848, died young; iii. Eleazer), born March 28, 1850, in New Orleans, La., was mar- ried, first, in 1878, at Chicago, to Mrs. Emma (Barlcdull) Warne, born in 1842, daughter of Enoch Barkdull, of New Orleans, and widow of Benjamin Warne, late of Chicago. She died in July, 1892. By occupation he was a travelling salesman, in politics a Democrat, and in religion a Methodist. Mr. Goodwyn married, second, October, 1895, in Atlanta, Texas, Nannie Eliza Miles, born December, 1868, in Jefferson, Texas, a daughter of Aquilla and Alice (Covey) Miles, of Atlanta, Texas, where Mr. and Mrs. Goodwyn now reside. Child by first wife: i. George Nicholas, born 1879, died 1881. Children by second wife: ii. Nannie Miles, born December 25, 1896; iii. Benjamin Aquilla, born September 20, 1898.

SALEMU CO., NEW JERSEY, GOODWINS. John Goodwin, born in England, married Katherine

They resided in the Parish of St. Buttolph, Algate in Houns- ditch, London, England. Child (only one known to me): i. John, born October 25, 1680, married Susanna Smith.

John Goodwin (John), born October 25, 1680, in St. Buttolph Parish, Algate, London, was married October 4, 1705, at AMan- nington or Salemn, N. J., by Friends' ceremony, to Susanna Smith, daughter of John Smith, of Hedgefleld, in Mannington, formerly of Krindall Parish, in Kent. He resided in London until 1701, when he "transported himself to Pennsylvania, and from thence, in the year 1702, came down to Salem." Children: i. John, born February 29, 1707, died young; ii. Richard, born July 4, 1709, nntraced;* iii. Mary, born September 1, 1710, died young; iv. Joseph, born November 21, 1713, married Sarah; v. John, born October 17, 1716, untraced; vi. Thomas, born June 10, 1721, married, first, Sarah Morris, second, Sarah Smith; vii. William, born August 25, 1723, married, first, Mary Morris, sec- ond, Elizabeth Woodnutt.

Joseph Goodwin (John, John), born November 21, 1713, in Salem county, N. J., married Sarah . They resided in Sa- lem county, N. J., where Joseph Goodwin died intestate. His
