INTRODUCTION

Maritime exploits and the special skills and technology that

underlay the conquest of the sea were crucial to the development

of Europe and the New World. The publication in 1979 of Maritime

Histgryj. A Preliminary Hand=List gf the Cgllectign in the Jghn

Carter Bpgwn Library marked a deliberate attempt by the library to

reveal to the world at large its holdings in this area. This

publication also marked, in many respects, the library's first

attempt to publish a substantial specialized subject catalogue

that covered only a certain aspect of its entire collection. In

the five years since publication of that list, the library has

identified other appropriate items in its collections and has

purchased others. The publication of this Supplement is intended

to update the basic list.

In most respects, the Supplement is organized in the same

fashion as the original basic list. The books were first divided

into subject categories and were then listed in chronological

order within each subject. For a listing by author and title in

alphabetical order, the reader should turn to the index.

There is one major difference, however, between the

Supplement and the original list: The Sypplemept is no longer a

"finding list." The continuous recataloguing of the library's

collections has altered many of the call numbers and shelf marks

in the main list and could result in the alteration of any listed

in the Supplement. Thus, this feature has been dropped, and

readers should be aware that the numbers listed in the original

list may no longer be accurate. Another difference is the

inclusion of bibliographical citations that were not used in the

original text, most notably Polak's bibliography; these are listed

at the end. A third difference is that the Supplement does not

include all the categories found in the main list, simply because

there was no new material to include in them. Otherwise, the

Supplement is compatible with the original publication. Authors

who appear in both the Supplement and the original list are marked

with an asterisk (*).

This Supplemept was compiled by Everett C. Wilkie. Jr.
