Entertainment and ExcitementConcours are really “showtime,” auto-
motive style. We get to see automobiles prepared to
far-better-than-new condition, the state to which we aspire with our own personal cars. With preservation classes, we see his-tory in front of us, as we observe vehicles that have suffered the ravages of time yet survived in presentable form.
Most concours have a “gotcha” mo-ment, where they unveil an unusual class, such as the hearses featured at the Concours of America last year.
I like to hang around marque experts at concours and listen to them evaluate cars. Where else am I going to learn how to confirm that a Delahaye 135M has a correct wiring harness, or a Cobra 289 the appropriate loom to the carpet?
Excitement grows as we begin to predict which cars will make Best of Class, and which will be anointed Best of Show. Like the audience waiting for the Academy Awards to be announced, anxious owners and restorers watch the judges evaluate their cars. They wait for their names to be called for the first round of awards. And then they hope for the nod that means their car is the best of the best.
Chances are, as you use this guide, you’ll find out about events that are new to you, and also remind yourself to put the familiar events on your calendar. Someone from Sports Car Market and American Car Collector magazines is at nearly every event, and we look forward to seeing you there. — Keith Martin, Publisher, Sports Car Market ■

Creating a Concours for the 21st Century
how can we produce a show that companies will want to sponsor and spectators will want to attend?By larry Moss, chairman of the concours d’elegance of america at st. John’sPhotos by dave tomaro
The idea of a Concours d’Elegance has been around since horse-drawn carriages
paraded around Europe hundreds of years ago. But only in the past 50 years or so has this celebration of the automobile hit Amer-ican shores.
It began as a show of beauty, showcas-ing both fashion and art with the automo-bile. Thirty years ago, there were just a few shows. Now, Sports Car Market produces this annual Insider’s Guide to Concours d’Elegance, highlighting the incredible number of shows that take place in the U.S. every year.
staying relevantIt’s a challenge for the collector, spon-
sor, judge and spectator to decide which shows to attend. And for the organizers, the challenge is how to make your event the “go-to” show. While each year we hear of a new concours event, we also sadly learn of the passing of another. The question we must ask is how can we produce a show that companies will want to sponsor, spectators will want to attend, and in which car collec-tors will want to exhibit?
In the 1930s, European shows exhibited cars that were mostly new, for obvious rea-

sons. After the war, shows in Europe and the U.S. highlighted pre-war along with a few post-war cars. In recent years, the focus for shows like Pebble Beach, Concours of America at the Inn at St John’s (formerly Meadow Brook), and Amelia Island has been to continue the tradition of inviting pre-war and early post-war cars, but also to expand the class lineups to include newer and more varied marques. The concours of the 21st century is facing a difficult chal-lenge: to include or not include?
The concours of years past included rel-atively new cars. The Pebble Beach show in 1955 had a 1931 Pierce-Arrow as its Best in Show winner — a car that was then only 24 years old. So, what does all this mean for shows beyond 2015? The problem we face is the inclusion of cars produced in the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, and later. And, if so, how to do that within the context of a Concours of Elegance? At what point does a Concours d’Elegance morph into a car show? That is the challenge.
a newer trendSince its inception in 1979, the Con-
cours of America at St John’s has always been considered a classic-car-type show. With Don Sommer, our founder, myself, and now Brian Joseph, we have continued the tradition of a field heavily dominated by pre-war cars. However, each year we’ve expanded the lineup to include a few rare and stylistically interesting cars produced in later years.
Amelia Island always has a great selec-tion of race cars and sports cars, including cars that were produced in the 1960s and 1970s. Our show has featured muscle cars, sports cars, race cars and special features from the 1950s and 1960s. Other shows are expanding their feature classes as well.
As organizers, we ask ourselves what constitutes a class suitable for a Concours d’Elegance. We must try to balance the sponsors’ desires with the spectators’ wish-es to put on a show that has rare, unique and beautiful cars. Like concours of the

past, our shows today feature art and fash-ion. But it’s the cars people come to see. So the various car selection committees work to balance the tradition of old with the reali-ties of today.
Cars of the 1980s are now 30 years old. When our car selection committee suggest-ed the idea of “Dream Cars of the 1980s” for our 2015 show, I initially balked. The idea was to feature cars that today’s 45-year-olds dreamed of as teens and might have had as a poster on their bedroom wall — for example, a Lamborghini Countach. The elder statesmen in our hobby view these cars as new.
Yet, like the concours of the post-war era, the cars of the 1970s and 1980s are still 30–40 years old. And while those younger en-thusiasts are embracing the older brass cars and classics, their first love is the car they remember while growing up. So, we and a lot of other shows have moved to highlight not just pre-war and post-war automobiles, but race cars, sports cars, ’50s and ’60s cars, and maybe now ’70s and ’80s cars.
More than a car showWhat separates a Concours d’Elegance
from the weekly or monthly neighborhood car show is the rarity, setting, theme ele-ment, and the celebration of style, restora-tion and beauty. Surely there are cars that have been produced in the past 10 years that will be an upcoming feature at some future concours, begging the question: How long shall we wait to invite or feature them?
Looking forward, what kind of cars should a 2025 concours feature? Each year I host a gathering of organizers from vari-ous concours events to discuss this and oth-er issues related to putting on a successful and profitable show. At what point, we ask, do we transition from “pre- and post-war” to cars that exhibit rarity, styling, panache and elegance befitting a concours? And will the fine line that separates a car show from a concours become even more blurred? Time will tell.
One thing is certain, however — what-ever form it may take, the tradition of the concours will endure. ■
In whatever form they evolve, the tradition of concours will live on
