BAPTISMDuring the life of Christ on earth, two forms of “baptism” were common—one practiced by the Jews and one

primarily used by the Greeks and Romans. It would seem that Christian baptism may have originated as a combination of the two ideas.

In the time between the Old Testament and the New Testament, people in the Mediterranean world were tiring of polytheism and their old system of worshipping city deities. They began searching for eternal life and for personal satisfaction in religion. Many “mystery religions” developed--named so because they each had secret rites and beliefs and an exclusive membership.

Some of them, such as the Dionysius cult who worshipped the god of wine, were known for their sinful initiation ceremonies involving drunkenness, drinking the blood of a bull, and horrible immorality, but not all of the religions were that bad.

Many, however, may have had a ritual involving immersion in water as an initiation for those entering into the cult. Sometimes that baptism portrayed the death of a “god” and his reincarnation. To them therefore, baptism signified identification with a religion or a god. It made sense for Christianity to adopt immersion in the Roman Empire as a symbol of joining the Christian Church and of partaking in the death and resurrection of Christ.

On the other hand, some of the Jews during that period developed a stern reaction to the pagan influences of the Greeks. They disapproved of how many of their own Sadducee priests had compromised their Jewish faith by following immoral Greek practices, including sacrificing to idols.

The Pharisees especially reacted to this unfaithfulness. They feared that unless they kept the Old Testament Law perfectly, God would judge them severely. Moses had commanded the priests to make sure they were symbolically and ritually pure before they approached the temple of God and made sacrifices. The concerned Jews attempted to be similarly ritually pure before God, so they tried to keep the Sabbath perfectly, ritually washing their hands before meals, etc.

By the 1st Century AD, the Jews had developed synagogues for worship and they used immersion pools for ritual washing. Before anyone entered the synagogue or held the Scriptures in their hands, they would dip themselves in the mikveh to be ritually clean. Obviously Jesus washed in the mikveh often, at least on every Sabbath. This practice of the Jews was an indication of a desire to be pure in all their lives.

Also, among Jews the rite of baptism was used to show identification with a leader. John the Baptist further emphasized the need to turn from sin, and he baptized people in the Jordan River as a symbol of their repentance and desire to live faithful lives. He was eliciting a commitment to holiness. Later we are told that Jesus’ disciples also baptized people, probably in the Sea of Galilee near where he was ministering.

In part, the Believers were joining a movement led by the Messiah, but also they were accepting Jesus’ command to “be perfect, as my Father in Heaven is perfect.” (Matthew 5:48) Jewish followers of Christ continued to

worship in the synagogue, to strive for holiness, and to be immersed regularly in the mikveh. After Christ’s resurrection, Peter preached that people should repent and be baptized (immersed in water), indicating that they accepted his message about Jesus’ life and atoning death. Later in the Greek world the apostles would teach more about baptism as a symbol of being identified with Christ in his death and resurrection. They did not teach that people actually received eternal life through such immersion, or that they would receive automatic holiness by being baptized. Instead, the act was a pledge before God, an affirmation of holiness, and a union with Jesus.

Among the Greeks where Christianity spread, baptism came to be a symbol of identification with Christ’s death and resurrection and a way to become part of the Church. Either way, the ritual

is a personally meaningful commitment to Jesus as Savior and Lord.

First Century Mikveh Pool

For those who wish to declare their desire for holiness or to symbolize their identification with Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord, a baptism ceremony can be held in the Sea of Galilee or the Aegean Sea if we can find a suitable place.
