OVERVIEW

Genieus Console uses a wide range of camera devices, including USB webcams, capture cards(for connection to conventional analogue CCTV cameras) and the latest network/IP videoservers and cameras. Because of its modular design, you are not limited to one type of devicefor the whole system – devices can be mixed, as required.

Motion detection is performed without the need for PIR triggers and external motiondetectors. Once motion is detected, recording begins. For extra security, Genieus can beprogrammed to record before and after the motion event to ensure everything is captured,and sensitivity controls add an extra level of flexibility.

Digital image storage means access to stored images is instant, allowing footage to be playedback while still recording. Also included is a loop play feature to continuously loop the mostrecent activity – a feature traditional CCTV systems are simply unable to provide.

With digital image storage comes simple to use, yet comprehensive, systems for imagemanagement. Archiving automatically ensures retention of the right amount of footage, imageintegrity checking ensures footage isn’t tampered with and feed management allows precisecontrol over the storage of images per camera feed.

Genieus Console supports I/O input and control through a variety of interfaces, allowingalmost any remote control configuration.

REMOTE VIEW/ WEB VIEW

The flexibility and simplicity of the user interface is availableremotely, and requires only a web browser for use. No ActiveXcontrols are required and no software needs to be installed.The remote interface provides a full live feed view, with digitalzoom options, control of PTZ cameras, multiple simultaneousfeeds, and image quality settings to improve performancethrough bandwidth reduction. Playback is also provided with allthe options of the local playback facility, and most of Console’sconfiguration can be adjusted through remote administration. Allof these features can be password protected at many levels toprovide a powerful security system.

GRAPHICAL USER INTERFACE (GUI)

Genieus Console 4.0 utilises a very flexible graphical user interface (GUI)that allows almost any arrangement of feeds on screen, even across multiplemonitors – a feature rarely found in other digital CCTV systems.

Genieus Console provides direct access to all feeds configuration via a‘tree view’ that allows grouping of cameras as well as showing additionalCCTV features such as sensor lists, plan views and access to alert anduser settings.

Below the list of feeds is access to the control mechanisms covering the layoutof feeds and the positioning of Pan/Tilt /Zoom (PTZ) Cameras. This sectionof the Console GUI is explained in more detail in the image on the right.

The first section contains the controls for moving andzooming PTZ cameras, as well as jumping direct to presetpositions, and a means for editing the preset positions.

The second section controls the appearance of feedson-screen, and provides for twelve individual layouts. Thesecan be customised to provide layouts optimised for specificsituations. One example of such an implementation might bea convention/exhibition hall, where camera focus can differbetween events, but is always the same set of cameras.

It is also possible to cycle through layouts automatically. The feeds change positions as eachlayout is set on a timed basis. This provides for a system where a small selection of camerasout of the total system can be on-screen providing focus, with automatic shifting to a differentset after a time period, allowing the Console to be used as an effective and flexible monitor.

Lastly, the Auto-Arrange facility allows the feeds to be arranged on screen in a ‘best fit’arrangement to keep the layout tidy. The PTZ controls are also duplicated on the web interface,keeping the user interface familiar.

GENIEUS ANALYTICS

The Genieus product range features ICE motion detection. This new detection method givesmuch more information about what is happening in the image, and allows us to add advancedanalytical functionality to our software. ICE functionality is performed by the software and notin the camera, enabling existing cameras to be utilised and investment maximised.

When using ICE detection the software knows how many objects are in the image, whichdirection they came from, which direction they are currently travelling and so on. This enablesus to embed some advanced functionality in the standard product.

MOTION MAPS

Genieus also has a powerful motion analysis tool calledthe ‘Motion Map’. When Genieus is performing motiondetection it also records the points on the image wheremotion has been detected; in the form of a progressivemap image. When this image is viewed, red points showwhere the most motion has been detected, whereas bluepoints show those areas with the least detected motion.

The motion map system gives an instant and accuraterepresentation of those areas where the most motionhas occurred. The example to the left clearly shows thebusy path between two locations.

This process is used a lot in Retail Analytics. Motion maps show which gondolas and featureends are busy and which are cold. Store managers can use this information to arrange theirgoods intelligently and thus drive customers to the required locations.

INTELLIGENT MASKING

Another feature available from Genieus’ ICE is intelligentmasking. In order to stop areas of unwanted movementcausing false alerts most CCTV software solutions employa masking technology, which prevents their system seeingthe unwanted areas of the image. This involves the userselecting an area (often multiple areas) of the image to defineareas where they do not want motion detection to occur.

The image on the left shows a mask placed over a plantand a person. Conventional CCTV systems would ignoreeverything that occurs behind this mask.

Genieus has an intelligent masking ability that works much better than the simple maskingemployed by other systems. The ICE intelligent mask allows selected masked areas to beignored in regard to false alarms, but still tracks moving objects through these masked areas.

The image on the right shows an object that originated from outside the mask still beingtracked and recorded as it passes through the masked off area.

APPLE iPHONE™ BROWSER

Genieus Console also includes an optimised web view forthe Apple iPhone.™ Featuring an intuitive and easyto use design, the same camera and IO control isavailable from Genieus while on the move.

iPhone™users are automatically redirected to the iPhone™interface whenever accessing the remote view. Login andview your cameras remotely, pan tilt and zoom or eventurn the lights on or off from the palm of your hand!

Also included as standard is the ability to playbackrecordings. It’s easy to jump to motion events via theusual timeline, which shows peaks in activity.

The iPhone™ browser also features compatibility for theupcoming release of iDomain, which links multiple camerainstallations together in a single web view.

iPEG

iPEG (iGenieus Priority Encoded Grouping) is a streaming video protocol that has been indevelopment for over two years, and is unique to the Genieus CCTV system. It is a protocoloptimised for the delivery of streaming video from CCTV applications over speed-limitedconnections such as broadband.

The design goal was to deliver video to remote Genieus viewers at double the speed that waspossible with earlier versions of Genieus, and we are pleased to say this goal has been surpassed.

iPEG uses an encoder that is part of the built-in web server of Genieus. The encoder analysesthe video requested, and only sends out those parts of the image that need to be updated atthe web view. The Java applet decodes the iPEG data and restores the video. Because smalleramounts of data are transmitted, less bandwidth is used resulting in a higher frame rate andsmoother display update.
