A Message From the 2011 Board Chair

To our donors, potential donors, volunteers and staff,

First I would like to thank the Board of Directors for honouring me with the opportunity to serve the Foundation in the capacity of Chair of the Board and for their support.

2011 was a challenging year. The global econom-ic crisis and the volatility of the markets had an impact on charities and philanthropy in general: a subject that attracted much attention and was raised in multi-page articles in national newspapers. We are grateful and extend our sincere thanks to the donors who entrusted more than $450,000 to the Foundation in the past calendar year. At year end we had established seven new donor created funds, two new agency endowments and had additional funds donated to enrich existing en-dowment and flow through funds. It is the generosity of our donors and the hard work and efforts of the Board of Directors, the volunteers of the different committees and the staff, Executive Director Jane Anema and administrative assistant Monica Shepley that the Foundation’s assets are at the threshold of $2,000,000. Sincere appreciation and thanks are extended to all.

A new initiative undertaken by the Board of Directors in 2011 was to increase and im-prove our interaction with existing and potential donors. The aim of these interactions was to improve transparency, to inform the donors of our operations, to update them about the investment of their funds, to solicit their input for possible improvements and generally to work together for the common goal of growing the Foundation for the benefit of our community. Two meetings were held to-date and more are planned for 2012.

The Foundation continues its role in providing grants in support of local charitable causes. Twenty one charities received grants in 2011 and we were pleased to award scholarships for the Society of St Vincent de Paul, the Chamber of Commerce and the Moffatt family. The total amount of funds granted was over $200,000 including those for flow-through projects.

The operation of the Foundation is managed through a modest administration charge on all our funds and through donations for operating expenses or net income from our special events. These events help us to broadcast the good work of the Foundation and are managed by our Special Events committee. The Foundation was pleased to host a number of events in 2011 including our Tastes of the World and Canada Day Party. These events along with our Day of Celebration are enjoyed by many and there are plans for them to be continued in 2012.

As my two terms on the Board of the Foundation come to an end I am more convinced than ever on the cause of the Sarnia Community Foundation and the potential of the organization. I would like to leave you with a quote from Julia Gillard:

“We see community organizations as major service providers and economic drivers rather than recipients or distributors of charity. Today they constitute what is referred to as ‘social economy’.”

The Business Of Building Community

Our VisionTo be the centre of our community’s philanthropy, re-turning more than $1 million each year to the community through grants and other charitable initiatives.

The Sarnia Community Foundation is unique within the local charitable community as its purpose is to ensure that gifts made to the foundation have an impact forever. The funds we raise and the grants we make remain in Sarnia Lambton for the people of Sarnia Lambton. It is the citizens of Sarnia Lambton we seek to serve and the citizens of Sar-nia Lambton who create our funds and provide direction to our work. Since our inception, we have made an impact on over 125 local organizations and thousands of people in the community. We offer an expertise in building financial capital for the projects and programmes people care about, while continuing to build social capital -- the glue that holds communities together.

We’ve been in the business of building the community for nearly 30 years.

Since 1983 we’ve been...

Over the course of their lives families become donors to many causes. From the kid’s school, the local sports team, a health related cause, buying hot dogs at a barbeque, to helping a neighbour, each of us has given back to our community either with time or money. We are all a part of building the quality of life in our community.

This year a number of families decided to make SCF a place that they could continue that giving and have opted to es-tablish funds at the Foundation. Joan and Ted Fullerton are two of those people and offered the following comments.

“We love the story of how the Edmonton Winspear The-atre acquired one of the world’s most beautiful concert or-gans. In 2002 Dr. Stuart Davis donated the money required to purchase the organ from a Canadian manufacturer in St Hyacinthe, Quebec. He was convinced that making this gift, while he was still living, was the best way to perpetuate the memory of his late wife. The gift also guaranteed that his contribution to the community would live on forever.

More than 170 Canadian cities have thriving community foundations whose missions follow the principle that Dr. Davis so admired. We can all support the charity or chari-ties of our choice in perpetuity by establishing an endow-ment fund with our Sarnia Community Foundation.

What better way is there to leave a permanent legacy in our community? We have joined the rapidly growing group of people in Sarnia Lambton who have done exactly that.”

The establishment of the Fullerton Family Fund will give back to this community for generations to come. Thanks Ted and Joan... your community is a richer place because of you!

The Foundation accepts grant applications once per cal-endar year. A Volunteer Grants committee reviews all ap-plications and makes recommendations to the Foundation Board for full or partial funding depending on fund availabil-ity, the number of people served and the project.

Donors who have created, advised or designated funds with the Foundation direct the income from their funds to local charities once per calendar year.

The Foundation made grants to 21 charitable organizations or projects in Lambton County in 2011.

Here are some of the results.

Neighbor Link

Improving People’s Lives“Thank you for your generous donation of $5000 to pur-chase cribs and mattresses. Neighbor Link Sarnia Lambton was able to purchase 26 crib sets.

While assembling the first crib set at Melissa and Robert’s home they could not hide their excitement and apprecia-tion for the donation. Watching Robert’s enthusiasm and pride in assembling his son’s crib - the one they thought he would never have - was overwhelming and Melissa’s beam-ing smile spoke volumes of the thankfulness in her heart.

Sarnia Community Foundation has made an immeasurable difference to better the lives of these families.”

The funds will enable us to expand and maintain our Visit-ing Artists in Local Schools (VALS) program. This year, as a result of your generous support, we were able to expand our program to include 8 additional schools. That brings our total to 15 schools where we are now able to offer art classes to grade 6 students.

The current VALS classes begin in October of 2011 and will continue to run until the completion of the school year. The success of the program is readily apparent in the chil-dren and teachers comments and program enjoyment. This

is especially true for the new schools that were previously not included in the program. They are overjoyed with this wonderful opportunity.

Through the support of the Sarnia Community Foundation we are able to offer all of this at no cost to the schools. This continues to be an ideal opportunity for students that may not have had an opportunity to experience profes-sional art lessons.

This program provides facilitated support for children and teens from ages 3-17 years of age. Children and teens meet others who have also experienced the death of a parent, sibling, friend or significant person in their life by accident, illness, suicide or homicide. The four major content com-ponents covered are bereavement, emotions, progress and continuing education.

The death of a significant person is a time of crisis and, if handled with love and support, can eventually become a process of growth. St. Joseph’s Hospice services act as a preventative program, working with children and teens to support them throughout their grieving process.

Funds from the Nova Chemicals Fund held in trust by the Sarnia Community Foundation were responsible for the creation of a fully accessible computer station in the main lobby at the Centre. Clients, their families and the com-munity partners will be able to access relevant treatment and educational information. The Resource Work Station is designed to ensure barrier-free and accessible communica-tion for clients and the community.

The Inn of the Good Shepherd has established an agency endowment at the Foundation as a means to create a leg-acy opportunity for donors and have a perpetual source of income. The Foundation will hold this fund and ensure the long term support of The Inn of the Good Shepherd and its many programmes in our community. The Inn board has taken a proactive step towards a secure source of funding for its good works.

The Inn of the Good Shepherd serves the working poor, the unemployed and the homeless; making a difference in the lives of thousands of individuals and families, plus improving the quality of life in our community through food services, shelter assistance and the start up program (Genesis). The partnership with SCF is designed to en-sure that those services will always be available to those in need through the creation of a lasting and secure source of income for the Inn.

The fund was established in late 2011 and already boasts a significant number of donations from individuals who see the need and have decided to support the Inn through this means.

The Lawrence House Community Arts Fund will provide a means for the community to make a lasting difference to the arts in our community. SCF will manage this fund and ensure its use in supporting the awareness and involvement in the arts through Sarnia and Lambton County.

The agreement has met with the approval of both boards and reinforces the long standing relationship between the two organizations. Lawrence House was refurbished through an initial grant that flowed from the Foundation in the early 1980’s and it has received grants for programmes in subsequent years. “It’s an exciting time for us at Law-rence House,” says Board Chair Janette Hewitt. “We have put our house in order and are excited about moving for-ward and continuing to develop the arts and artists in our community.”

“As the role of the Community Foundation is to support the quality of life in our community and because we see the arts as vital,” states SCF Board Chair Paddy Roach, “We are pleased to administer this fund on behalf of Lawrence House to support their dream of long term sustainability.”

Dorothy Rogers was well known in Sarnia throughout her career with the Sarnia Separate School Board as a teacher, consultant and as the first principal of Gregory Hogan School. An accomplished teacher, author, gardener and fundraiser, Dorothy believed in giving back to the commu-nity.

During her life, Dorothy had created a legacy of joy and when she died in 2010 the family asked for memorial dona-tions to be made to continue that legacy. The Inn of the Good Shepherd will be the recipient of the income gener-ated by the newly established Dorothy Rogers Memorial Fund ensuring that her good works will be remembered for ever.

Even Small Donations Make a Difference

The Sarnia Community Foundation is a different kind of charity. We give to other charities based on what our donors tell us and through a carefully managed grants programme. The funds in this report have been created by people just like you who envision a better future for their community. They have given a gift in perpetuity.

That means their gift will give forever. Because we are chartered as a foundation and because the board is committed to the endow-ment concept for giving, most of the gifts we are given are invested not spent.

Each year we take the income we are able to earn on all our funds and return that income to the community through grants. We don’t spend the original gift instead we reinvest it and the following year we are able to turn the money earned back to the community again. In fact we do that forever.

Every donation entrusted to us through our endowed funds is treated the same way, so whether the donation is small or large it will be used for good in your community forever. Over time even the smallest gift can make a difference.

For more information about donating to the Sarnia Community Foundation and improving your community please visit our website at www.sarniacommunityfoundation.ca or call 519-332-2588.

Community Fund

Established in 1983, this fund is comprised of donations large and small from many donors through the years. It is the pri-mary source of funds for the annual community grants.

The Community Fund helps meet ever-changing community needs – including future needs that often cannot be anticipated at the time a gift is made. Our local expertise helps us evaluate all aspects of community well-being. This fund is then used to make a difference where it is needed most.

Within the community fund a number of individuals and fami-lies have chosen to have a named fund. The income from these funds is directed towards community grants in accordance with the donor’s instructions.

Flow Through FundsThese funds are held by the Foundation for specific time lim-ited projects and programmes in the community.

Those who choose to tell us of their intentions become a part of a group called The Lambton Circle. They receive periodic updates on the work of the Foundation and have the opportu-nity be the first to hear of our initiatives and successes. They also become a very important sounding board for the Founda-tion as it considers how best to serve our community.

Although you may think that a large gift is necessary to be a part of The Lambton Circle, some thoughtful planning is all it really takes. We’d be pleased to help you create a permanent legacy and have you join The Lambton Circle.

Please call the Executive Director at 519-479-2082 to enquire how you can leave a gift for good… for community …for ever.

Honour Roll GiftsDuring the year the Foundation received a number of dona-tions honouring individuals, family members, families, achieve-ments and life events. These gifts were added to a fund selected by the donor. An honour roll gift can be made at any time and through a variety of means. The Foundation staff would be pleased to assist you in choosing an appropriate way to honour events of significance.

Donors, Sponsors, Volunteers 2011More and more people are discovering the Community Foun-dation difference! Back in 1983 a group of fifty people were asked to become patrons of the new Community Foundation. They responded generously and their gifts still continue to give back to the community through the community fund. Their gift totaled approximately $30,000.

As the years have gone by, the Foundation has grown. Cur-rently, the Foundation houses assets totaling nearly $2,000,000 and although the Foundation Endowment Funds are subject to

the fluctuations of the market we have continued to give back and honour the commitment of the original founders. We are all for community.

In 2011 the following individuals, families and companies have given gifts to our funds and helped to improve the quality of life in Sarnia Lambton.
