The support and development of the local Kāpiti economy is a key priority for Council. Having a strong, healthy engaged business community is essential if the district is to adapt as the world economy changes; a place where people want to live, invest and do business.

Creating and attracting more local businesses and jobs now, while laying the foundation for what the economy will be like in a decade is the focus of the Council’s new strategy to support the local economy.

Council’s new strategy to support economic development is an important step forward in supporting a resilient and prosperous district economy. It also signals a change in how Council will partner with the business community to support and grow the economic base.

As an immediate priority in the current economy, it is offering business support services for existing business and people considering starting up a new business. An independent provider, with a business background and 20 years’ experience of advising and mentoring small to medium businesses, will provide this support.

Support is also being provided to the tourism sector to help it package and market Kāpiti’s unique features, products and events and increase the number of visitors to the district.

Innovation and Positioning

Capturing and Adding Value

Council sees the future of the district as a place of creativity and innovation. A sustainable district economy that is led by industries at the forefront of the business world of tomorrow. A district where new and emerging technology is welcomed and used, where entrepreneurs can work with like-minded people to develop and commercialise technology, and where people in the district are employed

locally in good quality jobs.

Council’s role in achieving this future includes supporting the Otaki Clean Technology Centre and the establishment of the Clean Tech Trust to develop a Technology Park. In the past year, the existing centre has provided an environment for the development of revolutionary battery management system for electric vehicles, and testing of a new diesel emulsion fuel.

The Centre,Trust and Park will be a focus for how technology can help move the economy forward. It will build on what has started at the Centre, and has the potential to become a headquarters of clean technology development in the country.

Council is also supporting the development of waste minimisation, energy and water saving technologies, via its own operation.

SUPPORTING LOCAL BUSINESS

The district is home to many people with creative and entrepreneurial skills. It has rich largely underdeveloped soils, and is gaining recognition for food production, sustainable technologies and the development of small niche businesses. Council will assist key sectors to create and add value to the districts resources by linking them to

expertise, resources and technology.

Council is appointing an in-house advisor to work with the food and beverage, health and retirement and construction sectors in this area.

If you would like to contact them or would like further information they can be contacted at [email protected]

Council is also working with local iwi to maximise Māori potential through economic development. The

plan is being developed around three themes:
