I think just having the opportunity to think about these aspects of mental health is very useful and to talk to other PhD/post-doctoral researchers regarding our specific experience. The overview of the science and available books was also very useful

very helpful for a student struggling through their PhD

Poor mental health is a silent killer. Students and academics suffer from it but are reluctant to be too open about it. It would be a good idea to have group sessions of these courses for groups of people that must regularly work together (e.g. PhDs and their supervisors).

[This workshop] helped in refreshing the mind and thinking a bit more outside of the research

...it's helpful to talk to others and see they have the same problem as you

[The most useful aspect was] highlighting that it is both okay and important to have times when you are not working on your PhD

Finally I can open up and talk about my problems that have been bothering me for a long time, but I didn't know how to deal with or how to talk about it with other people. And it feels nice to know it is not shameful to have these problems and it doesn't mean I am not good enough.

What were the most useful aspects of the support group experience?

What were the most useful aspects of the support group experience?

Hearing what other people were going through helped to give me a perspective on my own issues. Often the advice given to one person would apply to me too. Helped to feel less alone and felt good to think we were helping one another. A dedicated space once a week away from work was surprisingly helpful.

More on sense of belonging / community...

Having a community and not feeling isolated. Getting insights from listening to other people's problems and feedback.

It has been useful to feel part of a group, which was missing in my life.“

Feeling like people care about me.“

• Mental health & wellbeing training for PGRs and supervisors is most effective when embedded in core training programmes

• Sharing common experiences and having a sense of belonging increases wellbeing and confidence in completion; QM should create spaces which promote communication

• Support Groups are very effective in increasing wellbeing

• Collaboration between services allows for holistic support

• Promotion of good mental health & wellbeing is most effective from the top: visibility of good role models, wellbeing strategy
