Project Background

In 2008 JISC began its “Business & Community Engagement (BCE) Programme” to support institutions in their strategic management of relationships with external partners and clients

This project “Training, CPD and Staff Exchange” is one of several under the BCE Programme

It was also very aware of the Government's agenda to build the knowledge economy, and in response to a growing understanding that the emerging profession of ‘Knowledge Transfer’ was fragmented and lacking in agreed frameworks for skills assessments and standards

BCE could involve: Innovation and knowledge exchange Strategic partnerships with business Workforce development and lifelong learning Public and community engagement Employer engagement External Service provision and delivery

Examples of Institutional BCE Activities

• Consultancy services• Collaborative research; Contract research• Start-up companies and spin-off companies• CPD and training services• Workforce development services; Work-based learning; Work

placements• Lifelong learning• Enterprise facilities, activities and education• Incubation facilities and services• Licensing of content and knowledge assets• Social entrepreneurship/corporate social responsibility

The Project objectives

Determining the support and enhancement needs of the existing BCE training provision and the target BCE practitioners

Designing, in consultation with key stakeholders a JISC BCE Training Support Package

Piloting, co-delivering and evaluating the JISC BCE Training Support Package, in partnership with the appropriate training, accreditation and collaborative bodies

Project methodology

The project contained three phases: Phase 1 (July-Oct 2008): Planning and consultation Phase 2 (Nov 2008-Mar 2009): Conducting a training

needs analysis using a range of qualitative and quantitative methods, and designing the Training Support Package

Phase 3 (Apr 2009 – Jun 2010): Delivery and evaluation of the Training Support Package

Project Outputs

• Training Needs Analysis of BCE practitioners (Workshops, Surveys & 30 face-to-face Interviews were held)

• Investigation into appropriate CPD frameworks: e.g. AURIL • Mapping of JISC Advance services, resources, events and

activities against framework (Other resources and frameworks will be considered and added later where appropriate)

• An Online Assessment tool to allow BCE practitioners to match areas of potential development against available resources

• Series of workshops to promote/develop the above

The Assessment Tool

Must be available on-line Should be easy and quick to use Based on established frameworks (AURIL V3) Personal & secure (Password protected) Skills based rather than ‘Job’ based Maps available resources to skills required Could be used as part of a Personnel Appraisal

scheme Will only use ‘validated’ resources
