The La Crosse Area Family YMCA has been part of the community for over 130 years. We know that lasting personal and social change comes about when we all work together. That’s why, at the Y, strengthening community is our cause. Every day, we work side-by-side with our neighbors to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. See what our facilities have to offer.

GIVE, JOIN, VOLUNTEER.Financial Assistance and the Y’s Annual Campaign.

GIVING BACK TO OUR COMMUNITYFinancial assistance keeps the Y available for kids and families who need us most. We count on the generosity of our members and community to help people of all ages and from all walks of life be more healthy, confident, connected and secure.

THE Y’S ANNUAL CAMPAIGNFinancial assistance is offered to individuals and families who cannot afford memberships or programs. We raise funds through our Annual Campaign to ensure the Y is accessible to all people. This year 1 in 5 people who walk through our doors will receive financial assistance for part of their membership and/or program cost.

She counted on the Y to help her achieve success. “I really appreciate theY’sfinancialassistanceIreceivedafter my accident that allowed me to be physically active and maintain a healthy lifestyle.” In three years she lost 90 pounds. A year after the cycling crash, she was injured in a car accident.

“Swimming in the Y’s pool and going to yoga class helped me to regain my strength,” she says. “Yoga taught me how to stay calm during times I wanted to give up.” Of all of her challenges, leaving an abusive relationship “was the hardest thing I ever had to do,” Leah says. Many people have taken notice of Leah’s courage to change. She’s invited to speak at various venues to motivate others with her “You Go Girl!” attitude.

YMCA’S DIABETES PREVENTION PROGRAMCHANGE TODAY FOR A HEALTHIER FUTURE You can reduce your risk for type 2 diabetes and gain tools for healthy living. DID YOU KNOW? • About 86 million American adults have prediabetes, up from 79

million in 2010.

• People with prediabetes are likely to develop type 2 diabetes within 10 years, unless they take action to prevent or delay the disease.

• Diabetes is a leading cause of heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney disease and nerve disease.

THE GOOD NEWS . . . Lifestyle changes such as eating healthier, increasing physical activity and losing 7% of your weight can prevent or delay development of type 2 diabetes in those at high risk for the disease. With the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program, you can work with others in a small group setting to learn how to adopt habits that will improve your overall health and well-being and reduce your risk. The program, which is led by a trained Lifestyle Coach in a classroom setting, is delivered over a 12-month period, beginning with 16 weekly sessions transitioning to bi-weekly then monthly maintenance.

HOW CAN YOU HELP? • Raise funds by asking others to give a gift and ensure the Y is accessible to all members of the community

• Give a gift to the Y’s Annual Campaign

SPECIAL EVENT & PROGRAM SPONSORSHIPSupport the Y’s Annual Campaign by sponsoring a special event or program. Volunteers

POLICY VOLUNTEERSVolunteers, by their very nature, help root the La Crosse Area Family YMCA to its identity as an association of people motivated by an ethic of service.

Policy volunteers are the people who serve on boards, committees, task forces, andthosewhoactastrustees.Policyvolunteersmayhaveskillsinfinance, human resources, real estate, construction, law, public relations, or other areas of expertise.

The La Crosse Area Family YMCA invites you to have a lasting impact in your community, help solve problems closest to home—or better yet—prevent them by serving as a policy volunteer. For details contact La Crosse Area Family YMCA Executive Director, Bill Soper, at 608.782.5944.

PROGRAM VOLUNTEERSProgram volunteers have direct contact with Y members and people in the community. They help the YMCA deliver programs and services. As a YMCA program volunteer, you can lead an exercise class, read to a preschool class, coach a basketball team, cook for a bake sale, design a program brochure, greet people at the front desk, and/or serve as a role model for young people. We invite you to get involved as a mentor, tutor, coach, or instructor and have a lasting impact on individuals in your service area. No matter how you help, you’ll make a big difference as you work with others to create a feeling of connectedness in your community.

We also welcome young people to serve in all of the above capacities as long as, like adults, they have the proper skills, training, and supervision.

Besides program volunteers, we also have opportunities for individuals wishing togivesomeoftheirtimeandtalentsthroughofficesupport.Whetherit’sworking on a computer or helping label envelopes, your skills are welcomed and appreciated at the Y.

To learn more about our program and support volunteer opportunities, contact our HR Director, Jackie Ripp at 608.519.5465.

COMMUNITY ORGANIZING

Healthier CommunitiesPIONEERING HEALTHIER COMMUNITIES (PHC)PHC is an initiative that was launched by the YMCA of the USA in 2004 in response to the rising chronic disease rates from three main risk factors: physical inactivity, unhealthy eating, and tobacco use and exposure. Through PHC, participating YMCAs convene a community team comprised of leadership from public and private sectors.

Locally, the La Crosse Area Family YMCA became involved with the PHC work in 2007. A strategic plan and mission/vision were created by a group of leaders determined to address chronic disease. The goal is to create an environment in the greater La Crosse area that promotes and supports healthy eating, an active lifestyle, and maintaining a healthy weight. If you would like more information about PHC contact our PHC Coordinator, Jill Miller, at 608.519.5510.
